I have had problems in the past when using 12vdc cameras and baluns on DVRs when using a common power supply especially when some cameras are on short runs and others on longer runs, the problem hasn't been a complete loss of video though, mostly the picture tearing or what looks like a horizontal rolling line similar to a ground problem. I'm not really sure what causes the problem but its not that the power supply can't supply enough current, but using individual 12vdc power supplies has always resolved the problem in my case, so I would try using a separate power supply and see if that helps. What countries hasn't the US pissed off ? Doug

How long is the cable run. if its more than about 75% of the rated distance then you could try an active balun at the head end. If its a very short run and you are using active baluns then you could try passive baluns. Are the two cameras powered off the same power supply?, if so you could try powering just one of them. If the two cameras are on the same cat 5 cable then a damaged cable or even a split pair could be the problem. Doug

You should verify that the ports are opened on both the router and any software firewall you may have on the client machine, Also on the host machine you should verify that the program isn't being blocked from the internet Doug

Is it an auto iris lens, if so did you focus it with the iris fully open, either using a filter or with the lighting at its minimum. Doug

Static IP necessary?

I was under the impression that although there is a DDNS setting on the Linksys routers it no longer funtions. Doug L I also use the BEFSR41, and it has DDNS support. I believe that you have to get Version 3.0 or better in order to get the DDNS support. I have an older 2.6 and even after the firmware update, it does not have support for the feature, which really makes no sense since they are both indentical in components. -
Which brand baluns are your using? Doug

Have you seen these PanaVise camera mounts?
Doug replied to C7 in CA's topic in Installation Help and Accessories
That looks like 1/2" EMT, anyway I think the part number for 1/2" is 847-1/2 and 847-3/4 for the 3/4" version Doug -
I think the VNC code is open source, but I don't know enough about software to integrate anything, I consider myself lucky if I can intergrate windows with my PC Doug

What's your ideal 16ch MPEG-4 DVR looks like?
Doug replied to John_lin78's topic in Digital Video Recorders
I'd like to see a feature that looks at the overall image from a camera and compares it to a "control" image and determines if the camera has been blocked or moved, it should be possible to specify an area of the image that doesn't change unless blocked or moved and have the machine check at regular intervals and also require a set number of checks before reporting a change to prevent temporary blockages triggering an alert. I have had several instances where a camera has been moved and due to the motion mask setup it either no longer records or records continously. Doug -
Take a look at their website www.realvnc.com, it has comparison charts on the different versions but its $30 for a single personal licenes and $50 for the enterprise, I actually asked for a quote for 30 personal licenses. but they said that for 30 licenses the enterprise would be cheaper and better. I was quoted $845 US for 30 enterprise license's from RealVNC, they say it allows 256 character passwords and encryption. I'll probably go ahead and order them since it only adds $28 to the cost and the use of longer passwords should help security, The following is from an email from VNC a few days ago in response to a question I had about user names and passwords in the personal and enterprise versions "It is not possible to have your own usernames in any of the editions of VNC. Basically what we are saying is that the password can be configured upto 256 characters. Though one thing to note that if using legacy viewers, then only the first 8 characters of the password will be taken. To avoid this ensure that encryption is turned on thus preventing legacy viewers from connecting" Doug

Despite my concerns about its security I use it on my Geo DVR's, I disable task manager and limit IE to deter the casual intruder, I also put it on my other PC based machines just in case I need to make changes to the system that can't be made through the DVR software, but I use remote admin on the router to open up the port only when I need to use VNC, but I suspect by using remote admin on the routers I'm probably opening up another can of worms. Doug nope ... they cant get out of the full screen video window, and also, on a firewall that doesnt allow any access besides the ports that are opened for that PC. First they got to crack my 6 word and digit pass and well, the place aint exactly a bank or something so i really doubt any real crackers will give a hoot .. But I do hear what you are saying .. Its on a Sonic Wall Firewall by the way ..i couldnt even access the darn net when i was there darnit Anyway, anything as easy to use as Real VNC but more secure .. and free?? I mean its greeeat and simple to connect ..and first time i ever used it I wouldn't trust it on my PC though!! LOL though I disable all remote access to my PC including Windows Remote Desktop and Access services .. i just paranoid yah know ..!

No, but they could wipe out the hard drive requiring a service call to reload everything, or use the machine as a host for other activities. Doug

I'm not really sure how secure VNC is, neither the free version of RealVNC or TightVNC supports user names and they only use an 8 digit password, it doesn't matter if you set up it up with a longer password, only the first 8 digits are verified when logging on. Doug L.

You can disable the blinking eyes in the version 6 & 6.1 versions by editing the GeoBrand.Ini file (should be in the windows directory), change the Brand=0 to Brand=1 and the blinking eyes should be gone, if you put your company name or any text in the BrandName= line of the same file, then it will show up in the splash screen when starting. You can get rid of the "fixed" eyes that may be hidden underneath the blinking eyes in the NTSC versions by editing the Sys_State.BMP in the commres & commres 1024 folders, come to that you can edit almost anything in the commres folders to change the colour and look of the interface. I've just noticed this problem on several Geo 6.05s, when saving a clip from the search menu to an AVI file and playing it back the time and date appears correctly on the AVI file, however if you save an image from the a clip in the search menu to a BMP file the time and date are incorrect when you subsequently view the saved BMP image, is this an anomaly in the Geo software?, or could it be in the machines themselves, they are all P4 running XP. My supplier has recently started shipping GV800-16 machines with Celerons instead of P4's, they claim the new Celerons have adequate cache and run a lot cooler than the P4s solving CPU overheating crashes/problems with the compact case machines as well as reducing the prices. Opinions?? Thanks Doug
