Yes, overheating can cause premature component failure. HDD's are known for their inability to tolerate high temperatures. If the HDD is getting hot enough that it feels like it could burn you when you touch it, that is a sure sign it will not last very long. Typical rating is 50 degrees Celsius but I typically prefer to see them running at around 40 degrees or less.

Can't access DVR system from Windows 7 but can from Vista
survtech replied to Indyharleyguy's topic in General Digital Discussion
Oh, well. It still could be Java. We had the same problem and the only workaround was to install the Java applet on a file server that is running an older version of Java. Even then, each time we try to run the RAID's program, we get a warning message that says "This application will be blocked in a future Java security update because the JAR file manifest does not contain the permissions attribute." Hence the problem with Windows 7. It has a newer version of Java. Our file server is running 1.7.0_45 and 1.6.0_20. Our Windows 7 computers are running 1.8.0_25. Obviously, you would need to be running an older version of Java - at least 1.7.0_45 or earlier. Thankfully, our domain is closed to the outside world so Java can't auto-update or we would be unable to access our RAIDs except for the "traditional" way - via serial port. -
Can't access DVR system from Windows 7 but can from Vista
survtech replied to Indyharleyguy's topic in General Digital Discussion
Check Java security. Newer versions often lock down the system to the point that they won't access CCTV IP devices. Pretty common with Windows 7. I have a RAID system that I can only access by remoting into a Windows 2008 server because my desktop client's newer Java version blocks the device's Java program. Sometimes, you can add an IP Address exception to the Java Control Panel security tab but other times, you're screwed if you can't obtain a newer Java applet for the device. Control Panel - Java (32 Bit) - Security Tab - Exception Site List. -
IP / MAC filtering - what this really mean
survtech replied to Caporeira's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
Sheesh, ak. Why not just spell it out? IP / MAC filtering means only the devices listed in the IP Address / MAC Address list you enter may "talk" to the device with the filter in place. An example: I have MAC Address filtering enabled on my wireless router. Only the devices whose MAC Address I've manually entered into the Address List can access my WiFi system. Others can't, even if they have the correct WPA security key. -
How do i setup a fixed camera that is delayed?
survtech replied to simondo99's topic in Computers/Networking
Or just put the DVR/VMS in "Playback" and rewind to whatever previous time you want, say 30 seconds from "now", then "Play" the footage. Many DVRs and VMS's allow you to play back a salvo of multiple cameras in "synchronized playback" and many of those allow you to toggle maximizing one pane of the salvo, to see one camera full-screen, then back to the salvo. -
Need help changing settings on a Pelco series 3 PTZ.
survtech replied to WillsMyth's topic in Security Cameras
Try preset 28 using Pelco D protocol (or possibly AD 32-preset mode). Remember, you don't want to use the function to call the camera to that preset location but to set the preset (also called define preset). http://www.timelapsesupply.com/Docs/pelco%20specs_manuals/TLS%20Links/tlslink_c2444mdsp.iii.pdf See page 9 - "Accessing Main Menu" and page 11 - "Presets". -

Analog HD, HD-CVI, HD-TVI and IP systems
survtech replied to nightrider's topic in General Digital Discussion
Gold? Please tell me where I can find solid gold CCTV coaxial cable installed. I just might have to make a night visit to the site Other than that, what "cheap cable" did you test that introduced distortion at 50 meters? Clad? Any analog system that used copper-clad coax instead of copper-copper was installed by amateurs or fly-by-night trunk slammers. -
SunnyKim, I didn't ask for chipset or technical information on AHD versus HDCVI versus HD-TVI, I asked for a source to back up thaking's statement that "Recently in China 1080P AHD has overtaken the market share of TVI and CVI".
-
Source, please. I find it very difficult to believe a proprietary Analog HD technology with only a relatively few small manufacturers and VARs producing and selling products has overtaken market share from Dahua and Hikvision on their home turf. Survtech, the claim might be right. I am also monitoring the market carefully. Note that AHD did make some success in Korea. The AHD receiver chip set can also capture the conventional NTSC or PAL signal automatically. Therefore, its DVR could be cheaper than TVI's or CVI's, which probably need extra decoding(NTSC,PAL) chip set. China manufactueres are very sensitive penny-wise. Unless my world map is wrong, Korea is NOT China.

Muawiya, you're talking about two different things here. To view and record any CCTV system locally, your Internet speed doesn't matter. Analog systems, as well as HDCVI, HDcctv, HD-TVI and AHD all record locally to DVRs or NVRs. You can also view both "Live" and recorded video locally with no connection to the Internet. The same applies to digital systems, like IP and HD-SDI. Local viewing is not dependent on your Internet speed - it is dependent on the type of system, the speed of your private network, if any, and the capabilities of your cameras, DVR and any client computers connected directly to your CCTV system. Where the Internet comes into play is if you want to view "Live" or recorded video from a remote location, like watching the cameras in your house from work or watching your business's cameras from home. In that case, with slow Internet speed, you will not be able to view things as well. Depending on your system and your choices, you may need to view images at lower resolution and/or frame rates than you would locally. You may also only be able to view one or two cameras at the same time, whereas locally you can view many at the same time.

Tested and Trusted Analog cameras
survtech replied to benharuna's topic in General Digital Discussion
I'm not sure I understand the situation here. Are you saying you're in Nigeria and want to obtain CCTV cameras for an installation there or that you want to buy CCTV cameras elsewhere, like in the U.S., to install in Nigeria? There's a big difference. From what I can tell, amazon.com does not ship to Nigeria. There is also no Costco in Nigeria. I would assume that you can obtain a number of cameras made in China, Malaysia, Taiwan, South Korea, etc. in, or for, Nigeria. Also, be aware that the vast majority of analog CCTV equipment sold in the U.S. uses the NTSC television system standards. Nigeria uses PAL. The two systems are not compatible. Most of Europe, South America, Africa and Australia do use the PAL system so for compatibility's sake, you should concentrate on those areas for your analog CCTV purchases. Countries that use the P A L system Countries that use the NTSC system There is also a third system - SECAM, originally designed by the French. Countries that use the SECAM system -

CCTV installation cost in San diego
survtech replied to starman9215's topic in General Digital Discussion
In CCTV, nothing is ever simple. Or you could just buy this and install it yourself: http://www.costco.com/AvertX-16-Channel-HD-NVR-Security-System-with-6TB-HDD-and-10-Autofocus-4MP-HD-IP-Cameras.product.100221880.html You are paying an Integrator for their expertise to design and install a system that meets your needs, not buying vegetables. -

Too many variables to quote based on too little info. You're going to have to allow prospective bidders access to the site(s), even if for only a ballpark quote. -
looking for a VMS software with very low latency
survtech replied to shanef's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
The key issue I found was "Live" viewing. There are many VMS' that work very well for playback, although some are better at things like time and ease to create clips - especially at finding and marking beginning and end. But "Live" viewing is a different animal. The VMS manufacturer has to make a conscious effort to reduce latency to a minimum, minimize camera call-up times and simplify PTZ controls. I understand Genetec still has issues with "Buffering" popping up at the most inopportune times. -

LOL. Good to hear. I understand even Pelco apparently took my evaluations as a learning experience but Genetec didn't. Funny, I heard they have decided not to go after the casino vertical any more. I even heard Zeb was transferred to another division. Haven't heard from him since right after I quit IPVM. -
looking for a VMS software with very low latency
survtech replied to shanef's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
IV? I thought you were an Avigilon specialist. In our testing of a number of VMS systems, IndigoVision did have among the lowest latencies - on the order of 150-170ms. It does tend to provide the lowest latencies using their own hardware, including cameras and encoders, but also has tested relatively low with Axis, Sony and Bosch cameras. Their cameras are not cheap, though. 720P fixed are on the order of $800+ and their Ultra 2k cameras (1080p) are on the order of $1,300+. BTW, Avigilon tested the worst, at least using their own analog encoders (>500ms). -
Yes. Although guns on airplanes are inherently dangerous, the likelihood that discharging a firearm once in an airplane's cabin causing a crash to the plane is actually quite remote. At worst, the bullet could damage flight systems, most of which have plenty of redundancy. Explosives are a completely different animal. Eliminating the TSA increases the possibility that aircraft will be brought down by terrorists or just plain nut cases.

I totally disagree! Giving up rights for security is one of the major problems confronting the U.S. today. As Ben Franklin said "They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety." He said it many times in many ways, including ”Any society that would give up a little liberty to gain a little security will deserve neither and lose both.” This is the legacy of the post-911 Patriot Act and it has many of us deeply concerned. Among the freedoms it illegally took away, as defined in the Bill of Rights, are: Amendment IV, Freedom from unreasonable searches: The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized. - (PA) The government may search and seize Americans' papers and effects without probable cause to assist terror investigation. Amendment VI, Right to a speedy and public trial: In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the state and district wherein the crime shall have been committed, which district shall have been previously ascertained by law, and to be informed of the nature and cause of the accusation; to be confronted with the witnesses against him; to have compulsory process for obtaining witnesses in his favor, and to have the assistance of counsel for his defense. - (PA) The government may jail Americans indefinitely without a trial. Amendment I, Freedom of association: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances. - (PA) To assist terror investigation, the government may monitor religious and political institutions without suspecting criminal activity.

The confederate flag is a symbol of racial division which you Aussies wouldn't understand. The key issue with the confederate flag is that it has often been flown as a symbol of racial intolerance: at Ku Klux Klan rallies, cross burnings, lynchings and many other anti-racial functions. It was originally designed by William Thompson, the Savannah, Georgia, Daily Morning News editor who also stated "As a people, we are fighting to maintain the heaven ordained supremacy of the white man over the inferior or colored race..." He also called it "The White Man's Flag." 150 years after it ended, most of the U.S has moved on from the Civil War but there are, even today, people who believe the statement "The South Will Rise Again". Those are very often the same people who are highly bigoted. It's long past time to get over it!!!

WHY oh WHY is an IP cam so much better for license plates??
survtech replied to nightswatch's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
One word: interlaced. Most analog cameras deliver interlaced video. That is where one frame (actually field) of video contains the odd scan lines and the other contains the even scan lines. When an object is in motion, the resulting picture looks like this: IP cameras deliver progressive scan video. That means all scan lines are contained in each image. Shutter speed and image resolution also have an effect on the ability to deliver images of the license plates of moving objects but interlacing is a major culprit. -
