Would this be a good interim solution?

Hi thanks for the input. I work in network security so I am sure using the IP cameras will be a snap for me. I was wanting to get a 16 channel as I did not want to have to fumble through 2 different DVRs to check my footage, but really a second DVR would not be a big deal. I appreciate your ISA/PCI analogy, it really helped put things in perspective. I think I will just save up for my IP system. Hard drive space is not an issue for me. I dont know why I am being stubborn. when I am ready to switch to IP, in theory making the runs should be pretty easy... tape the cat5 to the bnc cable and pull it through. In any case, your advise has helped a lot with my decision. J
  2. I am on the fence on if I am going to be moving in the next 2 years and would probably sell my CCTV system with my house. My current system is a Defender DVR with 8 analog 700+ TVL cameras. I really want to add more cameras and higher quality ones, but have a limited budget. This HDCVI hybrid is within my budget and would allow for rapid expansion of additional HD cameras. http://www.amazon.com/TMEZON-Realtime-Recording-Standalone-Recorder/dp/B00MGKXNF6/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1421544624&sr=8-4&keywords=hdcvi+16 I also like the fact that I could leverage my existing cables without having to pull new ones. Being that I am unsure if I am going to sell my house for a while, would it be benificial for me to upgrade to HDCVI or just wait a year or 2 until the IP system I really want is in my budget? When I go IP I plan on going top of the line. So, is HDCVI a gimmick, or is it a huge upgrade over D1?

Good job! I have an 8 channel analog system I am going to be converting to a 16 channel IP / NVR, but again budget. My 8 channel system is still better than no system.

Welcome! I wish I would have started all digital. Sounds like you did your research!

    Samsung is dumping their CCTV.

I dont know. I started with a DIY kit and am still happy with the 4 cameras that came with it. They are all 700TVL. I have since added 4 more higher quality cameras. I would like to think that my install job is pretty good and my camera placement is fair. DIY CCTV is a hobby that I really enjoy.

New to board, looking for advise.

Any tips on where I should put my next cam? I think I am going to narrow the focus on 2, point 6 toward the street / drive and narrow. Put a new one up on the other side of the wall where 7 is. What do you think? Once that is done, my 8 channel system will be maxed. Then it will be time to get a 16 CH. This stuff is addicting!
  7. Hello All, Been working on a DIY security system of for my house. Please review my setup and tell me where I can improve. I am considering getting rid of my defender DVR and going to a 16 channel system in the future. Channel 6 is the view between my garage and front door. Channel 2 is the driveway Channel 1 is the front door entry area Channel 3 is my outbuilding, located on same side of property as front door Channel 4 is the narrow area of property I have behind my property Channel 5 is is the narrow area of my property on the same side of my garage Chaanel 7 is inside the garage I think I am going to get another camera with a less wide angle for the front, but looking for advise from the forum. Also, is there anything you would change about my current setup that would not require more hardware?

One more thing, as I am looking for input, I thought I would attach a rough drawling of the property and camera layout.

A couple more notes.... CH 3, 4, 5, and 7 are the Defender 21006 cameras that came with the system. CH 1 and 2 are GW104MB dome cameras CH 6 is by far my best camera, Anran AR-VGB721-700 Not too impressed with the domes, but they are better than the defenders.
