  1. I have not had any problems here, knock on wood! If the units are under warranty, then the battery would be covered? _________________________________________________ I have more problems with the older units with the power supply on the same board, and the power supply goes belly up. It is very embarrasing when this happens a couple of months after the warranty expires. I wish I could change the parts myself! Too add insult to injury it then blows the external powersupply. (Or is it the other way around)? Thank for the heads up! Scorpion

    Interactive showroom ideas requested!!

I found this to my liking! I thought this kicked butt! I love how the flickering boxes highlight the boxes in the display cabinet. Cudos to Mark Lynch for putting this video slideshow together! I imagine you can create different slideshows, and have a different monitor in each part of the store. http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=242876517 Any other ideas?? THANKS!
  3. Hello everyone! This is an open invitation to the dreamers, designers, and integrators to design an interactive showroom, using inexpensive methods. I am seeking advise, consul, and electronic fabrication ideas! I would like to create a "WOW" factor when people come in to our showroom! I would like to have various "stations" where people can look at products, and have the lighting interact by darkening products, and highlighting the product selected. I would like to have stations where people can learn about cameras, IR, DVR compression methods, lens selection, wireless cameras, and remote viewing. I would like to have a station where people can press buttons to see the various cameras, and have a tv/monitor provide information on the selected product. I do not know flash, and I am not a programmer. I do not think doing a power point presentation is the way to go. I would like to create some kind of inexpensive "digital signage". I would like to figure out a way using IR control, X-10, computers, and Xantech products to create a dazzeling display showcase! Our showroom has been the same since it was first put together by the original owner many years ago. It is starting to show it's age. The ceiling tiles are worn, and they are starting to sag. The carpet is starting to frizz in spots. I really hate the way the showroom is set up. There is no rhyme, or reason to the overall design. It appears that they sold cameras that were on display, and then replaced them with whatever they had on hand at the time. On the left wall is the DVR, and camera display on shelves. In front of this there is a row of glass display cabinets, then there is an open area, and on the right wall is the wall board with products hanging from hooks. This set up is great if you are afraid that people are going to steal from you. This is not to bad. You can reach in, and pull out items from the spy shop selection, and place them on the glass tops. I am always finding myself pulling a DVR out of a box, and pulling it out of it's plastic wrap to show to a customer. The DVRs on the shelf are to far away for the customer to interact with them. I am not to fond of having customers come around the display cases so that they can press the buttons, and interact with the DVRs. I finally had to set up an old computer on a small desk up against the wall where the hanging products are so that I could show customers what the remote view videos actually look like on a computer. Over time we have been adding more, and more products. Lately Radio Shack has stopped selling X-10 products, and now they are sending their customers to our showroom. I have been debating whether to carry the full line of X-10 products, or not. I like an open floor plan rather than having aisle. I would like to have a "Security Center" in one corner to give it the commercial feel. Maybe I can find a Winstead console at a scratch and dent sale! I like the idea that Rory has! I like his idea to build a dark room, and install day/night, and IR cameras, and let people go inside to learn about the different styles of cameras. We are really excited about making these changes! I look forward to the imagination, and ingenuity from everyone on this forum!
  4. I am surprised that you do not have a tool similiar to it, considering how much computer work you do. I would think you would have to trouble shoot wires in the walls, wires from modems to routers, routers to PC, or DVRs ect. I bought mine originally doing home wiring for structured homes. Now I find it greatful to have in the tool box all of the time. I am checking phone wiring (cat 5), or networking wiring, or checking patch cables that I make on my own. Once in a blue moon I catch another installer that "lost" it on the cable connector during application.
  5. If at a minimum I would recommend this tool for checking your wires. You can place one unit at one end of the wire run, and the other tool at the opposite side of the wire. This will tell you if you wired the plugs correctly, and it will tell you if the wires may have slipped when putting the ends on creating a crossed connection by mistake! http://www.datacomtools.com/images3/tempo/cabletesters/larger/468.jpg
  6. I would highly recommend contacting the company that you bought them from. I have dealt with this company a time, or two, but not very much. I was in a pinch, and they came through for me! Give them a call, see what they say. They may have been ripped off in the distribution chain, and they may be a victim as well. I trust the S/T will take care of you!

DDSC2060 I feel your pain. You are just trying to make a buck! You got bills to pay, and your investment in your business that you need to repay back to your pocket, and you need to invest more money in to your business to take it to the next level! On top of this we installers/dealers have to deal with unscrupulous sellers on electronicbay, or other installer/dealers that give the industry/business a bad name. Here you are on this forum pouring out your hard earned blood, sweat, and tears, and you just don't feel like you are getting any respect. How much can you give while trying to help someone out?? You give, and you give, and you give till it hurts! I hear where you are coming from! Don't give up! I love the post that you have been dropping on the forum threads. You do not sound like a hot headed prima donna that thinks you know everything about CCTV! I have to deal with these kind of people all of the time, and it just gets under my skin dealing with these prima donnas! Thank you for keeping it real! In my local area if you want to hire a good tech then the prima donna is an automatic baggage that comes with a majority of them. There have been times that I have not hired someone because they did not have that prima donna quality. They have to have the fire in the belly! Alot of these techs think that because they have all of this knowledge that I should just hire them with a big salary, and they can play online games in the office all day long!!!!! ________________________________________________________ Here is a note to all of the forum readers who are looking for products! DO NOT BUY FROM ME!! BUY LOCAL! SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL DEALER! Buy from me because you respect me. I do not sell cheap! I am going to be the highest bidder on the market. I want to be able to help you 6 months down the road becuase you lost your manual, and now you need me to talk you through the menu, or your DVR crashed, and you need a loaner shipped overnight because security is of the essence! I know noone is going to buy from me! Why should they when they can go to the cheapest site that comes up on a google search? I have not sold one thing to a person on this forum. It is not that I do not want to. OK, it is my fault as I do not push it. I do not have the time to pm, and email, and call, and beg, and beg, and beg. You either want it, need it, or you have to feel that dream piece of equipment in your hands. I would love to place a banner ad on the forum, and end up going broke trying to ship out 1000 boxes of products, and play the float game until everyones check cleared, and the credit cards balances are credited to my account! Now that would be a sweet dream!! That would be great!!! It ain't gonna happen!! I would be foolin myself if I thought I could! If I did that much I would have no profit margin, and I would just be working for nothing! I may as well stay at home, and play with my expensive toys. My sole purpose on this forum is to better myself! I have no knowledge when it comes to PC based systems. This is where you guys come in. I can learn more here than I could building one system, and trying to sell it, and moving on to the next system, and hope that I can do the "on the job training" till I get it right, (if I dont blow it first, and loose the market share through stupidity). Thank you to everyone on this forum who keeps me grounded, and lifts me up with your knowledge!!
  8. To save you shipping charges try going to r@deo shak. They are about $5.00 US a piece. They may not be top of the line, but they should work if the one you have are bad. To get good pricing you have to buy 100 per bag from the vendors. I do not know if you need that much?

    Help with design.... please

They have these rug runners where you can run an extension cord under it, and you do not have to worry about trip hazards. What you do is cut a length the width of the road, and run the siamese under........What? You said you don't want to do this? OK? It would work if you gave it a chance! LOL! I wonder how long it would last with high traffic counts? I would PM Wirelesseye, and get his opinion! http://www.cctvforum.com/profile.php?mode=viewprofile&u=443 I would not be much help with wireless! _______________________________________________________ http://www.avalanwireless.com/ http://www.avalanwireless.com/applications.htm http://www.avalanwireless.com/product_list.htm

  16. You seem pretty tech savy, and I know I am wasting my time asking this question, but I will ask it for the new people who are learning about CCTV. I would ask, did you replace the connectors at both ends, (DVR, and Camera)? I too have had bad crimp on connectors. It was a total nightmare on installation that I had done recently. I finally realized I had a bad bag of crimps! I had to replace everyone on the DVR end, and at every camera! Somewhere in the supply chain the cheap crimps were mistakenly put it to a vendors order, or they were out of the better ones, and substituted the cheaper ones to fill an order. Now what do you do with a bag of 100 bad crimps? Eclipse was not to happy to hear that they had been ripped of in the supply chain. Eclipse was very proactive, and had a new bag to me the next day! This kind of theft appears to be rampant! I have heard of medicine being "traded" for crap yet it is in the proper bottle with the proper labeling!

Go to a music store, and buy what is called a "light" stand, or a "speaker" stand. This is compact, and the legs slide out to form a triangle base, and the stand can be raised up to about 10 feet. When you have the desired height, you just turn a knob to tighten down to that position. You can get the cheap "DJ" version for about $75.00. You can attach an LCD monitor to it as well. Even better buy a 220X zoom camera, and use this to show wide angle verses, regular view, verses a zoom view. This makes for a great Dog, and Pony Show!!!!! I actually bought the lightstand system. It is 10 feet wide, and goes up 10 feet high. It comes with two tripods, and two 5 foot pieces that link together to create a 10 foot span. I bought the crank up system. I just take the tripod out, but I use the rest of the system when I do HOME and GARDEN shows, and etc. I hang a 2 foot by 8 foot banner on the bottom of it. I take intelligent lighting, and I have them swing colored lighting all over the place to draw attention. At first I thought my "neighbors" would get pissed, but they seem to benefit from the "attention" that draws people! They have suction cup camera mounts (for dash cams) that you can lick, and stick on plateglass windows. I use this on commercial plaza jobs so I do not have to take a ladder with me, or I end up doing a D + P off the cuff. Wear shirts with big logos on the front, and the back. You would be surprised at how many gas station/convenience store owners will want to have a talk with you! This is how I get a lot of free lunches! I use magnetic signs on my van. It actually has home theater in vinyl, so that the customers feel comfortable when I show up for an install. A lot of people are really glad that I do not show up with signage blaring VIDEO SURVEILLANCE!!!! I can slap them on, and take off the video surveillance signs as I need them. If I am just driving around I have it on the sides, and on the back. Get the biggest that you can afford. I recommend a 13" color TV for outdoor daytime use. I do use a small LCD screen monitor, but it does not give the video any justice, in the Florida Sun. The LCD is great for the quick in and out situations though! The only time I use a light meter is to show the home/business owner that they have no lighting at all. I only run in to this in the nightclub/bars, and the fake casinos, you know the kind that gives out gift cards instead of cash. I never use it to make actual lux computations. I have bought a $250.00 lens selector. Total waste of $250.00 in my opion. It is great to hand to the customer, and let them slide the adjustment back, and forth, and then I can look at "their" view. It is more a prop, then a tool in all honesty. It justifies the $100 site survey fee, (they get the value back when they buy a system). LCD screen was the best investment out of all of my tools. I used to take a measureing tape, but I do in my head pretty much nowadays. If you do x-10 stuff they have testors that you can use to verify that it will work before you do an install. http://www.x10pro.com/pro/pdf/xptt_xptr.pdf ____________________________________________________________ I hope this is not information overload! I hope you enjoy the forum! Check out the ARTICLES section in the header above.

dvr808fx : It does have an upgrade for 30 FPS on all channels. Most sites on the internet want to keep the prices low, or they may not be aware of the upgrade features. I really loved this DVR. I had to put this in to a sherrif's dept gun range. This is a "house" where they do live fire excercises clearing the "house" room by room. They want to be able to watch it afterwards for an "after action report" for training purposes. This DVR blew the dept away on how clear the video was! They were very impressed. ICRealtime was on top of their game helping me spec out the bid, getting me the DVR, and giving me support afterwards. I was caught off guard that you can only watch two screens (cameras) during playback. You can punch the camera numbers, and travel around the views. They thought that this was going to be a liablility for them, but after one week they did not want to change DVRs as they did not want to lose the clarity of the pictures. I felt like I could pick this DVR up over my head, and throw it on the ground, and I could have plugged it back in, and it still would have worked! I am not going to try it, but it would have been interesting. What you want is called the R30 real time upgrade for all channels. At a minumum it would cost $750.00 or so for the upgrade. I do not know what other companies charge for the upgrade. DVRPRO208 Have you looked at this one? Real-time monitor 704x480, Playback 704x480, VGA output 1024x768 or 800x600 It is not desk top friendly. It is great in a rack in a server room, and you access it via IP. I would still recomend the Flex with the R30 upgrade. _________________________________________________________ If you want to watch multi channel (cameras) at one time then I would go for the 785 AVTech. Frame: 720 x 480 pixels with 60 IPS (NTSC) CIF: 352 x 240 pixels with 240 IPS (NTSC) Web Transmitting / Compression Format Motion JPEG __________________________________________________________ If security is of the essence then I would go with a PC based setup with h.264 _________________________________________________________ Are you wanting to record in frame or cif?
  20. Anti-malware company wins 'Spyware' court case http://www.itnews.com.au/News/60655,antimalware-company-wins-spyware-court-case.aspx Zango, an online media company, came up short in its attempt to force an anti-virus company to reclassify its "spyware" tag for the company's adware. The U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington ruled in favor of Kaspersky Lab, granting the security company immunity from liability in a suit filed by Zango. According to Kaspersky, Zango sued them to force the company to reclassify Zango's programs as "non-threatening" and to prevent Kaspersky's security software from blocking Zango's programs. "Kaspersky Lab's mission is, and has always been, to make the Internet a safer place for all," said Steve Orenberg, president of Kaspersky Lab, USA, in a statement. "We are thrilled with the outcome of this case because it supports the key message of the information security industry -- consumer protection comes first." The judge threw out Zango's lawsuit on the grounds that Kaspersky was immune from liability under the Communications Decency Act, part of which states that a provider or user of an interactive computer service shall not be held liable on account of any action voluntarily taken in good faith to restrict access to material that the provider or user considers to be "obscene, lewd, lascivious, filthy, excessively violent, harassing, or otherwise objectionable." Kaspersky noted that the ruling protects the consumer's right to determine what information and software is allowed on their computer, and gives anti-malware vendors the right to identify and label software programs that may be potentially unwanted and harmful to a user's computer as they see fit. For the price these are awesome machines! The video is good over the internet. They are not H.264, but they are great when you want to watch all cameras at the same time in multiplex mode. Some DVRs with H.264 will only let you watch 2 cameras at one time! These DVRs sell like hot cakes! I highly recommend them. They are very flexible. I can go in to any situation, and this will do what I need it to do! PS Long time no talk to. Nice to hear from you again!
