    AVTECH DVR & RS485

I was afraid of that! I posted the picture at the bottom of this webpage: http://scorpiontheater.com/io.aspx This will allow you to have the keyboard control an RS485 PTZ, and the AVTech DVR can control the PTZ. I would set the keyboard presets, and the DVR PTZ presets the same. When you use the keyboard you will get used to your presets. When you use the DVR presets it will have the same views. I do not know if the AVTech DVRs can be controlled with a keyboard to change views, and other functions. AVTech has released a keyboard recently, but I have never worked with it, and I do not know what it can do. AVTech DVRs can be controlled via RS232, and the older manuals have an appendix at the end of the manual.

You can use Cat5, and an RJ11. Cut the 6 unused wires flush to the jacket then place the RJ11 on the wires, and and use the RJ11 tool to attach it to the wire. You may want to use to extra wires in the connector to give it "stability". 2: RS485B 3: RS485A

    AVC 787D vs G4

This is true where DVR companies are selling (say this with extreme echo with your DJ voice) H.264!!! They may be using H.264, but it is graphic intensive. Put your hand on top of a Cable Box, and feel the heat! The entry level market manufactures will use low grade chipsets. This would be like driving your car on a major highway in first gear. Now add a four core radiator, oil cooler, transmission cooler, and electric secondary fans to your car, and now ask yourself how much farther down the road can it go before it overheats. Now compare to a racing block, and a racing transmission. AVTech is wanting to go H.264 compression, and H.264 network transmission. They are testing in the 4 channel market, and when they "get it right" they will add the 8, and 16 channel DVRs to the line up. You will see AVTech releasing a firmware every other week witht the H.264 DVRs. They are serious about wanting to be the player in the entry level H.264 market. They own the chip making plants, and the manufacturing line. This gives them the low price advantage to be in the low level market. The problem is having to sell a million units to make everything come together. Nowadays it seems that the DVR market is going through the growing pains that computers went through in the early years. They change every 6 months, and when you buy it, it is already obsolete!

I do not know if this info is relevant in todays market, but in the 2006 time frame this company was selling H.264 products before I even knew what H.264 was. I had a project that had requirments for perfect view over the internet. Where in the world do you find a DVR that had this kind of spec, but in a lower price range compared to other DVRs that could meet the spec, but was priced to far above the budget? I started researching ICRealtime DVRs. AVC 787D vs G4

This is true of anyone buying a DVR. Knowing what you are getting, and what the trade offs are going to be, and the the budget being spent makes it a land mine. I cannot speak for any of the H.264 DVRs that are mentioned in this thread. You do have to know the difference between live view which can be multi screen, and playback video. It will depend on the type of chipset, or the number of chipsets used. There are chipssets that can only do two channels of video. In the expensive DVRs they will install chipsets to match the total number of camera channels. In the entry level market the base price would preclude multi chipsets, or they would have to install chipset that have multi channels, but the picture would be degraded. This goes back to my question of what kind of chipsets are in the DVR. The real question is "what is the job of the DVR"? This will ditate what kind of DVR one would purchased based on the budget. For this thread it does not matter for the low prices being quoted. Buy all of the DVRs, and do a live test. The one that best suites your needs wins, and you turn around, and sell the DVR that does not meet your specs. One man's garbage is another man's treasure (and vise versa)!

Bugging article from Life Magazine 1966

    LOL! True True!
  10. I see threads about bugging devices, trackers, and about microphones. I thought I would put this thread in for your amusement! Life Magazine 1966 http://bit.ly/1h1tbi I thought you might be interested in the old advertisments. I finally figured out why all of the magazines have gone out of business. Once they banned cigarette manufactures from advertising then who was left to support the cost of the magazines? What do you think?

    Audio/Sound Problem

Hello! I am going to post more info then what you are asking for as others may be brought to this thread from the search engines. There are two many variables to judge your troubles. I have a battery operated CCTV hand held monitor that also has audio input, and a speaker. If you have one, or can use something similiar then go to the input of your DVR. You should have audio on the cable going to the audio input. You will not have audio on the output! You will have to press two buttons on the front of the panel. Press Slow, and Zoom at the same time. You will have three options. One is a greyed out icon (option not being used), and then there is a yellow icon, and a blue icon. This will tell you whether you are using live sound, or playback sound. You must choose the right selection in order to listen to the audio whether you want live, or playback. http://scorpiontheater.tech.officelive.com/Documents/AVTech_Manual_English_AVC_760_782_Update_V1.7.pdf I have not found a way to change these options from a remote computer through a browser, or through the remote software. For audio jobs I recommend that you use another DVR. _____________________________________________________________ TROUBLE SHOOTING. The input to the DVR must be at line level. This is what comes out of most stereo white, and red outputs such as receivers, and vcrs ect. Some microphones may need to be plugged in to small DJ mixer, and then use the mixer audio out, and plug this in to the DVR audio input. If you have a camera that has a mic built in, or a preamplified mic then you should be good to go, and plug this in to the audio input. http://www.eclipsecctv.com/ECL-MIC_microphone.html To know if you have the right mic, then you will see that the mic requires 12volts DC (or other variables depending on brand, and model). Louroe is my favorite! http://www.louroe.com/mics.asp?model=amic Once you have selected live audio you should then be able to hear audio on the audio output of the DVR. If you hear audio on the output you should then be able to hear audio on the net. NOTE: You will not have audio when you convert to AVI using the remote software.

The DVR that I am familiar with that the posted H.264 DVR reminded me of from the how the menu is set up was an 8 channel DVR, and you could not watch all 8 channels in 8 ch screen. You could only view two camera views, but you could press the camera buttons, and change the views. I was not happy about the two channel view, and the customer was very displeased. This went in to a live fire shoothouse, and they use the CCTV system as an after action report to see how they did. What got me out of the jam was the extreme clarity of the video on playback. I told them "I selected this DVR on purpose"! "It may only give two camera views, but you can press the buttons to see where they go, and look how clear those pictures are. You can see every detail"! They agreed that the video view was more important then the total camera view screen.

Connecting a mic on a dvr

If you are using a "regular" microphone then you may need to get an inexpensive DJ mixer to plug the mic into, and to allow it to be the preamplifier that the mic needs, and then plug the output of the mixer in to the dvr. You can use this as it has a preamplifier built in as do most cameras with built in mics http://www.eclipsecctv.com/ECL-MIC_microphone.html http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000972KQG

    How to avoid "smart" customers?

But what if they ask "Could you please print me leaflet for this camera from manufacturers website" ? Is this one from another vendor, or is this your product? I would say you will have to have cut sheets. You can post prices if you want, but you can tell them the price is MSRP, but I can get you better pricing once I talk to my vendor. I have an auto dialer that I press a button to make my phone ring, and I tell them to hold on while I put "customers on hold". I back up three lines, and go back to him. Hopefully this will put the customer in a frame of mind that you are in demand, and that he should go with you, or you are too busy for him to "play games" with you. I do not need the auto dialer as much as when I first opened up, but it comes in handy to get rid of the truely crazy as well.

    How to avoid "smart" customers?

You will have to use the "tools" that best suite your situation. Perhaps I might say. That one is $highprice from my main vendor, but I have a vendor who gets them factory direct with better pricing, but I need to get in contact with them for my pricing. What is your email, and I will send it to you. Those who are "shopping", and buying elsewhere will find every excuse not to give you their email. I do not know about your area, but where I am getting emails so I can send out a quote is very exeptable by customers with no problems. They may only ask "I am not going to be sold on a list am I"? I tell them, and asure them that I do not sell the information. You will pretty much have to come up with your own solutions to each situations. I can spot those customers that I would not rather deal with as soon as they walk in the door. I may direct them to a display while I attend to the next customer, and bounce back and forth while I keep them occupied with displays.

    How to avoid "smart" customers?

It is a slippery slope. I tell them that I would have to go out to the house, and I would have to see it to make a quote. (This would not work if they are just buying equipment) I tell them that I charge $100.00 for a site survey, and they get the $100.00 value back when they purchased equipment. I try to prequalify clients to the best that I can. I see what you mean. People question you about minute details, and then they leave your shop, and go to the Walton Warehouse, and buy a kit. The deeper the questions become, the more I say "This is why you are hiring me. I will take care of everything for you". I use fake model numbers so that they cannot google them, and to throw off their research. I may abbreviate ECL-599 to just 599. The more someone is pushing me for brand names, and model numbers the more I push "How much is your budget". Those type are more likely to tell you what you want to hear. You can try phrases such as "If I get you twice the quality at a really great price would you buy it right now"? Watch the body language. If they start pressuring you about product specifics I then give them a line such as "I do not know product specific as I deal with 20 vendors, and I am going to contact each one to strike a deal as they owe me one". "I may have a sales person at that company who may win a Caribbean Cruise for selling 20 units, and they may be sitting on number 19, and they maybe willing to lose a commision to win the prize, and I can probably get you a really great deal"! I will also call some of the other CCTV companies, and forwarn them of extremely difficult customers. I pass on vehicle type, and what questions they were asking, and what products I quoted. This only works if you have a working relationship with the other companies. I have great communications with other CCTV companies, and we help each other when in need such as a delivery that did not meet a deadline, and someone needs to borrow wire, connectors, power supplys, or what have you. I will even call other companies, and give them heads up on jobs that are right up their alley, and they send me info on jobs that are more suited for me that they would not have an interest in. What do you think?

    AVC 787D vs G4

Hello everyone! The AVC787D was introduced in 2005, and has been updated ever since. The product is still available due to mass production, and inexpensive price range. This DVR has been "replaced" by the AVD717, and the AVD718. Based on prices that you posted then the AVTech wins based on price. You cannot compare the two products! That is comparing apples, and oranges! I would tell you to buy the G4! If you want to compare the G4 to an AVTech H.264 DVR then use the AVTech AVC798D http://www.avtech.com.tw/english/cctv_feature.aspx?ID=AVC798D http://www.avtech.com.tw/english/cctv_spec.aspx?ID=AVC798D The AVTech is always going to be cheaper then the G4. Are you kidding? Anytime you can buy a 16 channel DVR for $100 US then buy it!! WARNING ABOUT OLDER DVRS: If they are using IDE drives then make sure you know how much an IDE hard drive cost to replace in todays economy. Check your computer store to see if they carry them, and how much. If you do not have a ready supplier then you may want to avoid any DVR that uses IDE drives! It would be more preferable to buy a used SATA drive DVR as the SATA drives are more available, and cheaper compared to IDE drives. What kind of hard drive does the AVTech DVR have? I suppose you could use an IDE to SATA converter! Are you sure about this price brand new? I would avoid this. The price is to good. I peeked in a Shoreview Security's website to see the price, and these do not match in price. If this is a used price then I would say buy both DVRs!! The G4 has a SATA drive so based on the prices you quoted then the G4 is the better buy based on the hard drive. There are better DVRs to buy in the used price range so both lose. H.264 is graphic intesive. This requires some hefty chipsets. What chipset does the G4 use?

I have never worked with this machine. It might be that it is a simplex machine, and I would recommend a triplex machine. I would recommend the AVC 760A ( the A is the newer SATA version, and without the A it is the older version with the IDE HHD).
