    Lightning Basics

I would say "do not ground the camera". I would say have an alternate system such as a lighting rod, and wired to ground. In florida to protect people they have telephone poles with a wire strung in between over head. The idea being that the lighting will strike the wire protecting the people. http://www.lightningsafety.com/nlsi_lhm/magic.pdf The principles of traditional lightning protection are basic — 1) provide preferential strikes point for lightning (an array of conductors higher than the objects being protected), a good grounding system, and conductors between the two to conduct the damaging current from a lightning discharge away from the structure to be protected; and 2) provide appropriate transient protection on power and signal wires entering the structure to protect equipment and personnel from the effects of induced lightning currents. What does it take to provide complete protection from lightning? It requires a means to ensure that the currents from a direct strike cannot enter the structure, and electrical transients induced from lightning are prevented from getting into the structure. To prevent the currents from a direct lightning strike from entering Kiva II, it was constructed of 1/4â€
  2. Thank goodness he does not have the front the same as the rear otherwise, there would be quarts of oil all over the road. What is the hazmat response for that? If it was a 3" concrete bump, then why do I feel like his attorney would be sueing for damages to the vehicle, and probably would win!

A firmware will not resolve this issue. You have a chip failure, and the board needs to be replaced.
  4. The camera is about an inch off the ground, and the bump is about is about 3 inches high, but not over 4 inches. The bump is not very big at all. I am suprised that it got hung up. Here are some pics http://scorpiontheater.com/speedbumpcamera.aspx You can see it is about the same size as a Dewalt Drill on it side.
  5. Who ever messed with the camera never pushed it up to the glass inside the enclosure. Looks like it needs some serious cleaning!

    It will not do this.

The quick answer is no. The true answer is anything can be done if you throw enough money at it. I am sure the CIA can extract the video to capture Bin Ladin. I would tell you to see a forensic specialist if the video is of value. It will run you $1000, and higher depending on the service. Do you really need to save the video?
  10. Is it possible to buy a switcher that has loop outs?
  11. You will need to replace the external power supply, and the small internal power supply board. These are expensive! You might find a laptop power supply that has the connector that has the 19 volts dc, and the wattage. The inside board is hard to find, and they are expensive. How much are you willing to spend on the parts? If you have done a hardware reset, then the default password is 0000. Press the ENTER button 4 times, and that should get you in to the menu.
  14. I cannot help you. I use entry level AVTech DVRs. I was shocked from your post! I have never used the Geo Vision cards, and I have no experience with them. I was truely suprised about your PTZ issues! How do you control your PTZ remotely from somewhere else? The AVTech DVRs connected to a cheap PTZ controller makes a great system! You can control the PTZ through the remote via the DVR, and locally the customer can use the joy stick, and presets. I set the presets the same on the AVTech DVR, and on the PTZ controller. Do not compare me to commercial PTZ, controllers, and video multiplexing commercial systems, but for small business, or the "rich" home owner this system rocks! Geo Vision?? Hmmm? Interesting! Note to those reading this post: You cannot control the PTZ via the AVTech 760A's front panel. You will have to have a seperate controller. You can give up the controller if you log in to the DVR via a computer, and then you can control the PTZ locally, and save a little money. Standalone DVR or PC based?

We do not know what the standards are? Is this for a residence, or a commercial business? How much are you willing to spend? What is your threat level? In other words do you have a million dollars cash under your mattress, or do you have a diamond store? We would treat a cheap "beer store" differently compared to a diamond store. The cheap "beer store" is not going to spend any money as there is no margin in beer, cigarettes, and, and lotto. Diamond store has a high threat level, and they need some key high end cameras, and then you can add in some cheapo cameras to help the budget for the non critical areas where you just need an over view. Only you can really make this decision. I prefer stand alone, as most of my customers are in the "entry level" category, and they do not want to spend a lot of money. If I were doing GE, Harris, Westinghouse, the state captitol then I may prefer the PC based system, as I might need to add analytical software, and I may need to add license plate software, and I may need to have electronic access, and I might need software that integrates all of these systems to make them one platform. This is where I would avoid the stand alone DVRs. PC based IP cameras is definately a way to go, and I would recommend this path. People would say it is expensive, but it would work out about the same with a great DVR, and some great cameras that match the video pound for pound. For a diamond store I would go mega pixal, (HDCCTV analog, or IP based). What do you think?
  16. The AVTech AVC 760 (old style), and the AVC 760A (New Sata Version) have BNC loop outs. It also has quad video out for your Dist Amplifier, or you can use the SPOT out (one camera at a time in sequence).
  17. You will need to replace the battery to keep the date and time. Take care,
  18. So it was the hard drive! Unplug your DVR, and power it back up to see if it retains the date, and time. It is possible that there was a short across the power input, and it may have shorted the battery as well, and then you would lose the time / date data. The battery is under the board. (For those of you with new DVRs do not pop the warranty tape to take a look)! Glad to see you have it working!
  19. Pay everyone's tab to the next ISC? No? Just a thought!
  20. LOL! Actually I bow down to you VST-Man! Anyone ever use wall mounted raceways? http://eclipsecctv.com/Surveillance_Installation_Tools.html
  21. I do! They go good with old work brackets too! low voltage rings, and wall plates http://www.hometech.com/hts/products/wiring/wallboxes/low_voltage/index.html
  22. It appears that you have several unrelated issues that are effecting the DVR. The date / time group of 2000 is a sign that the battery to the main board is dead. You will need to change this battery for the DVR to "remember" the date, and time. You have to replace the hard drive. You have a power supply issue. I am going to guess that the hard drive is over heating, and causing the power supply to have issues. This is where the DVR resets. When it resets it goes back to the year 2000. You might have a bad external, or internal power supply as well. What do you think? The battery is a MS621FE battery. Here are some various links on the battery. AV776W strange error

My first guess is to open the DVRs, and see if the fans are spinning. I bet that they are not spinning. This has overheated the DVR. If the fan is not spinning then touch the chip below. See how hot it is!!! You should be able to find a 40mm fan at any computer store. You will just have to cut off the wire to the old fan, and attach it to the new fan. What ever damage you have will not go away. If you have any other of these DVRs then you will need to get to them, ans swap out the fan on those as well. This goes for the AVC 777 also!! (or any DVR for that matter) Make sure that they do not have a bunch of stuff cluttered around the DVR to block air flow! What do you think?
