    Unknown analog dvr

I would check to see if there is a hardware reset and do that first. I would take the battery out of the DVR and let it sit for a while, and the install the battery back in and then test it.
  2. I have not worked with this particular DVR so I truely cannot answer your question. Your DVR is manufactured by AVTech Taiwan. In regards to AVTech model DVRs over a period of time I have used, and abused these DVRs beyond typical tolerances. The AVC 760 (sata, or IDE versions) will go in to an attic in the hot Florida climate and they will work. More heat more issues, but they work. There are other brand DVRs that start beeping before I get down the ladder. The external power supply helps by isolating the power from the DVR. The DVR has an interal power supply also. Using the amount of DVRs installed, and separating non UPS / Line filtration (does not include power surge protectors) from non UPS / Line filtration I would tell you that there is a big difference between the two. Using a UPS / Line filtration would be highly recommended. It will help filter out noise, and momentary blips in the power line. UPS will help with brown outs (which is dangerous as spikes) and over voltage moments. I am willing to bet that you swapped the DVR, and left the original power supply in place. The DVR may not be the problem. The external power supply may be the issue. If you traded out the power supply with the new DVR then call an electician (customer pays) and if you did not swap the power supply then swap that out and give it a try. I have ran in to DIY wiring and have had issues. I test with an extension cord to another area and plug it there. For a very small price they have those testers that you can place in the wall and it will tell you if the socket is miswired. What do you think?

Please wait HDD scanning - Avtech 760

If you have formatted the hard drive then it has to be unformatted in order to go back in the DVR. This might be the problem. There may have been some sector issues that were resolved during the format process on the PC. The DVR wants a hard drive fresh out of the package. I would test the DVR with another hard drive to verify that you do not have a hard drive "controller" issue. Perhaps there is AC leakage in the power supply that is causing issues? Perhaps you can use HD tune to check for sector issues?
  4. The Surreptitious Video Surveillance Act of 2010 Arlen Spector http://www.eff.org/files/HEN10303%20FINAL.pdf HEN10303 S.L.C. If enacted, this new law would make it a felony to record or view video from cameras in residences. It also seems to criminalize a homeowner using his own hidden camera to surreptitiously watch his babysitter with his kids, his wife/girlfriend/kids/housesitters/etc while he's away, etc. Seems problematic for CCTV security practitioners. Security contractors could be exposed to criminal and civil liability for selling and/or installing covert cameras that are later used illegally. Like all federal laws about electronic surveillance, this new proposed law contains broad exemptions for agents of local, state, and federal law-enforcement and intelligence agencies (under existing U.S.C. Title 18, Chapter 119 provisions.) We need to band together and lobby against this law. If they only wanted to add written notification, or signage then this would be fair. As it stands only LE (Law Enforcement), and goverment agencies would be allowed to perform surveillance. This may hit the Private Investigator field as well!
  5. I think that is the intent of the bill. I think it is over drafted and they have a bargaining position to whittle down to where they actually intend to be. Who knows! It could be a political tool to shake down the insurance companies. Support these individuals in the election and we will make this bill go away. So hard to see what is going on behind the scenes. I remember back in the day when all drugs stores had to put stroble lights near the cameras. I thought that was crazy! Maybe that was the lead up to this bill.
  6. I am betting on the Insurance companies (and other related businsess with liabilities) to fight it to the death.

The economy is so bad that......

I got a pre-declined credit card in the mail. I ordered a burger at McDonald's and the kid behind the counter asked, "Can you afford fries with that?" CEO's are now playing miniature golf. If the bank returns your check marked "Insufficient Funds," you call them and ask if they meant you, or them. Hot Wheels, and Matchbox stocks are trading higher than GM. McDonald's is selling the 1/4 ouncer. Parents in Beverly Hills fired their nannies, and learned their children's names. A truckload of Americans was caught sneaking into Mexico. Dick Cheney took his stockbroker hunting. Motel Six won't leave the light on anymore. The Mafia is laying off judges. Exxon-Mobil laid off 25 Congressmen. Congress says they are looking into this Bernard Madoff scandal. Oh Great!! The guy who made $50 Billion disappear is being investigated by the people who made $1.5 Trillion disappear! And, finally... I was so depressed last night thinking about the economy, wars, jobs, my savings, Social Security, retirement funds, etc., I called the Suicide Lifeline. I got a call center in Pakistan, and when I told them I was suicidal, they got all excited, and asked if I could drive a truck!

AVT AVC777 record quality fps problem

The answer would be no, most DVRs would not have this issue. You have a first generation DVR, and it was built to be in the budget price range. Back then no one wanted to pay $2000.00 for a DVR, and this DVR was a great value with limitations. The new entry level pieces of garbage will run circles around most DVRs from the 2004 time frame. Price of hard drives have come down, or the size of the drive has increase by an obcene amount of storage. I would say that you are ready for an upgrade. You will be in the $2000.00 price range if you want a good commercial DVR.

AVT AVC777 record quality fps problem

OK! I see what you are talking about now. 25 IPS Images Per Second is 12 FPS. This DVR does not record 30 FPS per channel. Your video is going to be "jumpy", and there is not much you can do except move up to another DVR that has 480 FPS for 16 channels. Yes it is as it was designed in 2003/2004. The marketing would even say "built in VCR, and Multiplexor"! LOL! Live video is refreshed quicker then the recording rate. Are you using the browser to view, or are you using Video Server S (or the very few that were updated to Video Server E)? Watching recorded video is going to give you jumpy video because this is not a 480 FPS machine (divided by 16 = 30FPS per channel). I cannot find it, but somewhere I believe is says the DVR records total at 120 IPS which would be 60 FPS divide by 9 channels (you have to turn off the unused channes) equals 6.66 Frames per second. The person who sold you this device, did they tell you this machine records at 30 FPS??????
  10. Contact your local computer store, and ask them to set up XP Virtual. You Win 7 can handle this. Give them a call.

    video rolls over cat5

What are the cameras mounted to? Is this a metal warehouse style building? Are you running between two different buildings, such as the DVR in one building, and the camera in another building?

What's your favorite low budget DVR

I will stick with any DVR that I can beat with a rubber mallet, and it will keep on running. I am not saying AVTech is the best one out there, but it sure can take a couple of whacks, and keep running! (yes I throw cameras on the ground to test also)!

    AVTech KPD674 hardware reset ?

kpd672 Hello. My goal is to help as much as I can. My posts are based on older equipment where there appears to be less "tech support" from dealers, vendors, and online Etailers. Yours is a brand new machine, and you should have full techsupport from where you purchased it. I would say that the chassis is going to be similiar to the legacy equipment. Try the KPD672. Does this match you mainboard? Try cpd 501, or 502. One of them is going to match. It appears from some pics that were sent to me that it has a same power supply as the legacy equipment, and has similiar chipsets. I would imagine you will find the KPD672 to be a close match otherwise you will have the JP2 jumper pins that you would short. Can you take a pic of your mainboard?

AVT AVC777 record quality fps problem

I take it that you do not a DVR that has a network connection therefore the reason for the webserver? How many cameras do you have connected? I am thinking that there is a lag between the DVR, and the webserver, and then the lag getting it on to the internet. Question: What kind of internet connections do you have? Entry level, or super high speed level? If everything looks good on the LAN then it may be your internet Service provider issue.

    Remote log in error

As said above. You will need to leave the building where the DVR is located, and use a different computer to test the WAN IP address. It is like drawing a line on the map from your start point to your destination. When you are at the same building and you use the outside IP address then you are not able to draw a line. You are standing on the start finish line and no line can be drawn. Go to another building, and now you can "draw" a line from there back to where the DVR is located. OK! Forget my anology! LOL!
  16. I second the above advice. I have a question: Do you have video at the camera with a monitor? I would cut the end off of each end of the cable, and reconnect the connectors, and see if that clears the problem.

    Tech Heads

I was not sure what you were speaking of. When I clicked the link I was shown the video "Can you blend an IPAD"? Ok! I game! Lets watch! Yes it blends! LOL! My real question is this: Is this really a commercial for the blender in the video? If it can chomp PC then it should mow through ice with no problem! If I owned a blender company I would pay $1000 for an IPAD, and munch it up for a promo! Would you?
  18. Do not be afraid of the X10 stuff. I do not know why you are using a VCR with the advances of technology, and the price drops for equipment. You are going to find that turning off your Camera is only going to make your VCR record black. If you VCR is recording you may as well record video. You will need to control the VCR through with the IR. Perhaps sending pause / play signals. A motion detector will have to be placed in a manner where it is triggered before the person walks in to the camera zone. If the detector is in the same zone as the camera you will not have the person in the camera. By the time the detector senses the motion, and your camera receives power then you have to determine how long it takes your camera to come on line to provide good video. The wireless outdoor motion detectors have a short range as they use the least wattage available. I would suggest that you record full time with the VCR using 8 hour tapes, and use 3 tapes for 24 hour recording. If you need wireless motion detectors, devices to turn the cameras on, and off, and software to control everything then let me know.

The correct term would be cracker. He is not a cracker. Hacker has so many definitions it is hard to keep up. Your point is well taken! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Security_cracking http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hacker_(computing) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_hat

  23. Hello Analog wireless cameras are 300 feet line of sight. Check your specs. Line of sight means that the two antennas have to see each other. If they do not see each other then this is the first issue. For beginer installers who need a tool then there is this plus software that can be used on a laptop. http://www.metageek.net/ http://www.metageek.net/products/chan-lite It connects to a USB. Depending on what level software you use you can see things that may interfere with your cameras. Most cordless phones are on 2.4Ghz just like your wireless cameras. The best solution is to change one, or the other to 5.8Ghz. Cordless phones come in 5.8Ghz. This will cut down on a lot of interference. The next one is wireless internet routers. You will need to go in to the router's configuration, and change to a different channel until you are no longer interfering with the cameras. To test your system, un plug all wireless phone base station (not the charging stations for the extra phones), and unplug your router, and see if your video clears up. Most wireless cameras will have about 100 milliwatts of power. This is the same as a child's walkie talkie. You cannot put a transmitter in the same case as the camera. The heat from the transmitter will burn out the camera. This is why the power is so low. The other is you would need to build heatsinks, and fans. High power systems will have regular cameras that plug in to an external transmitter. This will have heat sinks, and fans to keep things cool. Poles are used to get antennas above trees, and roof tops. The antennas have to be pointed at each other. Omin directiona antennas will send the power signal in all directions. Beam antennas will send the power signal in one direction. Think of a beam antenna as if it were a flash light. Point the flash light in one direction. It is narrow at the source, and it gets wider the farther away you go. Take your cameras distance rating, and cut it in half. Think of a ramp, or a sideways triangle. one side is signal strenght, and the bottom line is distance. The farther away you go the less power you have. The signal may go 300 feet, but there is barely any power to measure. At the half way point you have a good level of power to work with. When you put a wall between the two antennas you will need to move the transmitter, and the receiver closer together. In your case the distance seems pretty short. Perhapse the wall to the garage has solid pour concrete? Perhapse it has rebar in the wall? Unplug those devices, and see if your interference clears up. Also X10 cameras will be on 2.4Ghz freq. What do you find in your test? What do you think?

    Are These Costs Excessive?

I am glad that you are getting good info that can save you money down the road! The magnet, and contact can be used for other purposes as well. If someone were to stick an item in to the door, and the door frame then you would know that there is a problem. It could be a simple as a delivery person using their cell phone to hold open a door while they continue to get more packages, or someone trying to let someone else in to the door. You can time a door to prevent "tailgating" where one person follows another person while the door is open. If the door is held open for too long then an "alert" can be sent. This will allow a security guard to look at the door camera to see if the others are authorized, or not. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Access_control
