Near-Line SAS vs. SATA Drives For Video Mgmt Server
riri7707 replied to armoreltech's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
My small contribution here: I worked a lot of years for CCTV manufacturers . I assisted to the migration from AIT tapes, then PATA, then SAS HDD to SATA HDD actually. This choice is due simply because the performance of the new SATA drives today, the costs and the cheapest controllers for SATA management. So these choices are issued from long tests measurements with the provided servers available (Dell changed recently their strategy too going to SATA HDD even for high mass storage). Regarding the storage RAID functionnality : Raid 5 is the minimum protection and a little "has been" also manufacturers are providing more and more Raid 6, due to lowest and lowest HDD pricing. Just check the last Dell servers, you can reach in one unit 700 recording streams with a total of 600 TB, very simply for a centralized solution. And of couse having Mirroring unit or Failover or One server spare for a group of 15 Nvrs online. Technology permits that today very simply. But at end: costs are there too. Today, this is normal some will still push to SAS, as big stocks exists, but for how long? CCTC IP manufacturer are always pro-active and in a confidential relation with servers IT manufacturer, so they are still working on future hardware and R&D evaluation for the next incoming years, and as the troughput grows from year to year on expotential way, doesn't surprise me to have more than 1000 video streams in a single server, event with 100% stress specially when rebuilding faulty array So SAS will desapear in the next incoming years; remember what happened to simple SCSI models and PATA. Today SATA 8TB Hdd are still there for public use. And at R&D offices capacity over 10TB exists yet under testing/evaluation/validation. But these are just the facts... Overwhelmed By Hikvision Choices
riri7707 replied to MarcM's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
Hi, regarding the point to point solutions, Ubiquiti is a very cheap good solution who works perfectly: You can reach up to 15km if necessary for around $60/80 unit. I used that between 2 houses 3km distance (straight with some trees in the middle), so in this case 2.5 Ghz (loco M2) is the best choice than 5 Ghz, but that's fine: Ubiquiti : Airmax Nano station M series. 150 Mbps (real throughput), so for 10 cams 4mbps = 40 Mbps, that's fine enough and no needs to have NVR locally. I use 4 HIK 3MP/4096 Kbps and this is great, no issues or skips at all) You can manage the bandwith, monitor, finetune the settings, this is really a top product (made in USA), and available via Amazon. So no risks: you can try during 30 days and if it's not OK, refund money... and as you create a secure ethernet connexion, then you can also add some addons for security (intrusion détection, lights switch and so on). -
1.3MP vs 2MP vs 3MP Question
riri7707 replied to mattaggie's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
My kwnoledge here : Today, the best option is to go to 3MP cams, simply because more MP you have and more détails you get. Even if in Live mode you do not see that. In fact you can appreciate it when you zoom IN, in live or playback mode. You will see the difference... So regarding the prices today, no issues than going to 3MP. But no much cams can provide live view or playback at 25/30 ips in 3 MP mode. So most of them does it correctly only in 2MP mode (Full HD) 3MP at 20 ips will be used only in aereas where you need détails, that's it If you can make some tests between 1.3/2/3MP, you will conclude yourself. And just to make some $ economy, better to go directly to 3MP. -
Found some cheapo generic 2MP cameras from China. Opinions?
riri7707 replied to Reshesnik's topic in Security Cameras
Personnaly I went to HIK. Seems to be a very good compromise quality/pricing for personnal use. I used this one : DS-2CD2432F-IW Simply because it works with Wifi You can move it regarding your needs (only 12v power adapter requested) Very descreet, you can place it everywhere you want You have buzzer when you pass behind the PIR sensor You have audio (ok it G711s compression, similar to phone audio quality but that's enough). It's Onvif profile S compliant and have also RTSP etc... So if you take care about all options embedded and the easy way to install it, This choice is not bad. Ok, you need $110 for it. -
You can try with a laser pointer enough powerfull shooting through the lens of the cam. But this is an extreme solution. Do that when you are sure he is not there and be discrete. But you will begin a war between him and you as probably you will distroy the CMOS/CCD captor of his cam.

Looking to Setup Alarm to Magnetic Contacts
riri7707 replied to Ozone's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
I do not know specially this model but it includes I/O port. Means using In imput, you can trigger and Alarm. But not sure if it's ok with Basic magnetic contact. Per my kwnoledge , the magnetic ILS works always on negative way: Close in normal status when the door is closed and Open in Alarm mode. You will need to make some try with a standard wire before and check if the In is NO (normally Open) or NC (normally closed). This is important to know and check in the settings if you can have the choice. Other way, you will need to add some basic electronics to provide the right information state to the input to manage it. Hope this helps. -
Hikvision DS-2DE2202-DE3/W
riri7707 replied to riri7707's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
Local chinese for moment, but specs are quite interesting for the price. Models are smallest and smallest with better performances every quarter. So if the Onvif Compliance was correctly done, no much doubt it can be easely integrated on any VMS and NVR. I used an Axis M5014, but it's quite impossible to get fluidity with PTZ, due to concept of the cam itself. Only presets works correctly. Speaking with Axis, no much things to expect more about this micro ptz model. So introducing small PTZ with fluidity from HIK it's really an interesting thing answereing specific needs and quite discrete. Let's wait first" youtube" tests and forum reports about. But for sure Hikvision in EMEA will not deal with it as they don't deal with series 2 to avoid breaking pricing and maintain standard range costs for middle and high range series. So, for series 2 in EMEA: Amazon, Aliexpress, EBay, etc... But you get what you paid for, for sure -

Canon plans to purchase Axis
riri7707 replied to thewireguys's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
One experience with this Canadian manufacturer: they don't have really an honnest working line/way. If you are distributor, they will go around to reach directly your Customers and make direct deal using one installer. So very difficult to trust as distributor, not be sure at all your customers will be safe with this kind of working way. If you are an installer/integrator, they need you as they don't install directly but be sure, you will not be the only one online. So as result : pricing problems. I had a lot of feedback from some distributors who tried to work with -
Canon plans to purchase Axis
riri7707 replied to thewireguys's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
Going back to Axis discussion. Today the 50% parts of the company are in family builders of Axis. So 3 people only, the other 50% parts where shared through a lot of people. Now, imagine these 3 Creator of Axis who are more than 50s years today. So, how can you refuse to get 500 millions Euros cash each to enjoy and profits for their last days. I think is more than enough and immediate effect. A dream. So this is now quite sure, they probably accepted, so now is quite official. Just some weeks or months to formalize that, but decision was yet taken. But if you take a look, Milestone acts today as independant company event if they are CANON officially. Will be the same for Axis. Only results and benefits will be looked by Canon internally, but Axis will continue as Axis today. -
Canon plans to purchase Axis
riri7707 replied to thewireguys's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
Hi buellwinkle , You wrote the right world who resumes all : Chineese cams are "good enough" for what a Customer expects. This is the main point. Today, Customer request changes. Before it was : I need a solution for my security issues, can you make a study and let me know?... Today it's more : for 100 k€ what can you provide?, but take in mind your competitor told me more around 90k€ and you, can you made it cheaper... Arghhh. What crazy world.. Personnally it affects me directly as I'm unemployed since one month (last arrived, first fired) as per investment brainstorming review from Headquarters. Just because they always want to win more and more money and grow profits. And it's a manufacturer, not an integrator... -
Canon plans to purchase Axis
riri7707 replied to thewireguys's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
Agree with comments about HIK. For me they have 2 lines produts : retail (cheap and direct trash if it fails after xx month/ series 2) and Pro Series. But for security, the best option today is not use standalone NVrs but SW only with a real server rear like Dell, the most commun and used today. Just for info, today you can reach more than 700 recorded streams/channels in only 1 server. and secure it using N+1/failover, etc... There is no really limits, only throughput/bandwith limitation on server and CPU power, and each year these limits are pushed over and over (thanks for us). This is what makes the difference with Embedded hardware proprietary NVRs vs SW only. Most of the company provide today a new release every 3/4 months to be on top 10. Best manufacturers works today on SW Only NVR/VMS solutions with Stream encryption, watermark, etc, to secure the most as possibile the LAN and streams access.... But this have a cost and not accessible to common customers. Today the biggest ones are : NICE/MILESTONE/GENETEC/INDOGOVISION/AVIGILON, etc.... These ones pushes SW only and that makes really the difference with Professional options accurated and improved. I Worked in my last life for some of them during last years So from my point of view : HIK= only usefull for cams today, that's it.. This is an enough young company in the market, but they have the knoledge and provided finished SW products with Onvif really compliance, easy to install and used. OK, Onvif is too Young too and a lot of manufacturers fight with it, but this is the future who really opens the cams to compliance worlds placing RTSP as hasbeen solution Axis never went to SW VMS prioritizing cams only. Event if they work with access control since few months. So today difficult to be efficient both sides : cams and management/NVR/VMS. Those who have both, are not efficient on both sides. These allow integrators to choose on side the cams and other side the NVRs and management and replace easily one or other part of the solution during the live of a site/client. For NVRs, I do no recommend generally proprietary hardware but more SW PC based solutions. -
Looking for Hikvision 5.2.5 or 5.2.8 firmware
riri7707 replied to lewislitt's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
Hi, From my small experience with recent HIK cams series 2, there are here 2 different points. Step 1: is to unbrick your cam. I don't think FW v5.2.5 or v5.2.8 can save your situation. These FW are not yet official FW and not yet provided by HIK and of course not supported. More suitable to work from 5.2.3 as it's now official and with Hik Customer Support if possible. Step 2: If your cam is Chineese (just need to read your S/N), then you will have also another problem as probably you cannot upgrade the cam to US or European FW version. So in this case you need 1st to unbrick the cam with the help of multiple topics talking about and how to do it. As result you probably will have only Chineese as language option. Once done, if you don't have English on the GUI of the cam, you will need to use solution like CBX provide to have it with multilanguage So not easy task but request to be methodic and it will work for sure -
Canon plans to purchase Axis
riri7707 replied to thewireguys's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
Yep, This is how the world works. FYI, Axis was the 1st Worldwide company to build IP cams and most robust in the market. To maintain that, they provide 2/3 new models each quarter for specific needs and market branches as retail/Banking etc, but the sales goes down actually Usually, they employed people very often these last years and now, they stopped getting new employee. However, face to manufacturers like Hikvision/Dahua who growing and getting parts and parts of the market, this is sure at end only few manufacturers will share the cake of video surveillance. Future is yet here and don't be surprise to see some big manufacturers bought by biggest company. I have a good friend working at Axis as Sales position, and you cannot image the pressure they have to always make more and more and always more sales. So from my point of view, if CANON arrived now since 2 years in video CCTV, it's not something strange. And if Axis Head Quarters decided to sell, it's not so strange than that at all, this is the right moment. Canon acquired yet Milestone these last years. So they have yet the management SW solution. Messing now for them to have the terminals: cams production to complete their CCTV solution. By other way, Hik opened a new office in EMEA and their sales are growing month after month, simply because the pricing is quite ridiculous low and the functions and quality really here with middle and high range products. I'm quite sure Hik will be also one of the most worldwide Company in the next years. Money, always money Apologise for my English:not perfect -
Suggestions on IP system $2000 budget
riri7707 replied to maxhighlife's topic in General Digital Discussion
Hello ... My open thinking from my experience with ip cams and Nvrs. For $2000 you can easy find a good compromise quality/pricing on DIY solution. Regarding Cams: the future will be manufacturers like HIK. Why? Simple because Chineese gouvernment is rear and have majority actions of the company. So they can made the price they want in the market. Like Huawei for the IP/Telecom infra-structure who are growing these last years. China is here and eating all markets, killing resellers, small and big video company, and don't forget: it's too late/machine is running and cannot be stopped. In fact, there is not a lot of real true manufacturers in the world (other than historic ones (Sony/Pana/Pelco/Bosch/Samsung/etc...), but they began these last years to stop development and buy OEM products more and more). Today, one biggest manufacturer (not known from public), but very active with a lot of brands is: DYNACOLOR. from $100a cam, you find it in EMEA for $600. This is a dream for some and nightmare for others. They build for a lot of brandmarks, devellops specific enclosures with makeup to provide a big range of models. A simple tour in a Security exhibition and you will see similar models with same pcbs Embedded in different booth. For some the enclosure was the same and just the model and name changed. But specs are the same: normal So my conclusion : As today the standard live of an IP cam will be around 5 years, don't spend too much money on it. Today, HIK 3MP cams models is one of the best compromise, regarding quality . With 2 Streams is enough to work= 1 for recording, the other one for live view. And why 5 years ? simply because the actual cam will be "has been" in the next 2 years. Technology advances in expotential mode and the features in the next years will grow very quick = more features, better quality, better Lan management, but less expensive. Think about that: don't invest too much. Now another point is the BW of an IP cam. Working on HD 1080p/25ips is the ideal mode. Why to go upper these values ? Maybe some specific fields where you need very high quality? for people recognition? OK, can be. But the relevant and usual bandwith turns around 4Mbps/6Mbps per camera. Going upper these values is something stupid and it doesn't provide real improvement. So let's say standard BW is around 4Mbps (This is what I personnally used as standard). Don't forget more you go high and more your Lan can generate issues and of course issues with your NVR. Now regarding NVRs. if some claims :200 Mbps, in fact this is the total Throughput the NVR can manage. Means this value consist in a total of (number of recording streams + number of live views + number of Playbacks). Means for example if you record a single cam with 4 Mbps and you have 2 monitoring stations, and you made at same time a playback you will need 20 Mbps in the baddest case using Unicast mode. IP streams management request CPU power and RAM. So never expect to get magical things with a cheap NVR. Or alternative solution is to use several Small NVRs 4 CH for example distribued. So again, consider 4096 Kbps per cam is relevant in such case. You can use VBR, but you will not win a lot. Only some specific cams in the market manages correctly the VBR (Variable Bitrate). Finally what about NVRs? My recommendation is more to go to a Software Only solution and install it on a dedicated PC as server. This will allow you to try several Softwares solution for free, decided who is better for your needs and the most important, the Software lives, upgrades are there most of the cases for free. and you can simply change your software in one or 2 years without replacing your original hardware investment. Consider SW only have also a cost, but more flexible. So Embedded NVRs are totally closed with minor firmware upgrades to correct bugs and open minor features. But this is still a closed box who will need to be replaced in few years to have benefits of new technology (H265 for example). With a SW on a dedicated PC/Server, you will need just to replace or upgrade the SW management. My personal conclusion for a today request :$ 2000 investment or less : - xxx Hikvision IP 3MP cams ($88) sorry for local ressellers if HIK sells to thirdparty distributons in China, it's their fault first of all: They play on both sides. So Money is the war. Warraty and region firmwares are bull****. For $88, if it fails, it fails, but this is HIK. Do you know the % of faillures Not too much risk here. But take original HIK and not rebranded models... - A good POE switch or indivudual POE injectors - A good PC dedicated who will act as NVR and free to you to add the capacity of desired storage But these are my thoughts and what I used since around 10 years now. I had the chance to get different cams in hands, make a lot of tests (specially with Onvif profiles), discuss with some manufacturers. Personnally I replaced some cams on my system, used different SW but the base is still there and operational. I'm just upgrading now with adding some Hikvision 3MP cams ($88) and this is perfect. HIK is killing the Professional market with too agressive low princing with good quality products and probaly become one of the major actors in the market in the next years. So avoid strange cams with stranges names, proprietary devices who only works with their NVR models. Future is Onvif. RTSP is the last issue and open window to manage foreign cams with some Nvrs, but this in only Stream capture without benefits of extra features Embedded in the cams (motion detection for example/Audio, etc...). Other way: the secure solution, find a good integrator near your location, trust on him. But a service have cost and needs to managed (maintenance, assistance on site, phone assistance, remote assistance, etc.). Here, we can share our experience and provide some feedback. We can assist some issues and provide links to access downloads, etc... Think about.
