What is the best way to connect 8 cameras to a multimode fiberoptic line. My company does not do any fiber work (and will not start on this particular project) I want the fiber vendor to supply a connector/ termination device but do not know what to ask for. All the cameras are within a short distance of the fiber line. I would like to pull the cameras (either Cat5 or coax) to one point and tie in together. What will I need and who manufactures the devices I need; where can I buy them; and what kind of cost are we talking about? Thanks for your help.

We have been doing CCTV for about 3 years now and have managed to avoid access control, but too many opportunities are knocking and I fear it will hurt our buinsess in the long run if we continue to tell our customers that we can only provide them one service. I was a GC for about 20 years prior to my CCTV life so I have a slight knowledge as to the components of a properly installed access control system. I have the opportunity to quote a simple (small area) 7 door system at this juncture and need some help. I am quite familiar with maglocks, electric strikes, card readers etc. My real shortfall is the 'brain' behind the system. What specifically am I looking for in this department. Who makes a relatively simple and somewhat bullet-proof system? What should this cost. Can you suggest any publications to read or sites to visit for more information. I am here because I dont want to profess my ignorance to my regular suppliers. I appreciate your help.

I need to install a camera on a pole in a remote location powered by solar power. Is there anyone that sells a sort of a 'turnkey' kit of everything that needs to be mounted on the pole including the solar panels and abattery box, etc? Can any of you tell me any sources for either a kit or the individual components.

Which is superior with regard to general use and in terms of simple to use GUI. I have used DF for about 4 years and am interested in possibly changing to others. What other cards in this range might you also prefer.

I have a client that wants to cameras mounted on a pole. It will be about 12' above the ground. Obviously a 4x4 wood post can twist and warp and generally not look very good. I am concerned over attracting lightening for a metal pole. What do you think? IF metal what can I do to protect the cameras?

We installed a system in a condo community using cat5 and baluns. The intent all along was to relocate the DVR in the future. The longest original run is about 750'. The time to relocate is now. At the time of the original installation, we installed additional cat5 cables from the temporary DVR location to the new location (about 850'). All images in the original location are perfectly clear and sharp. All images in the new location are, technically, crap! We spliced using beanies and crimp connectors - both with bad results in the new location. We have verified all results (at both ends) using a test monitor. We have tried replacing baluns with no change. The power supply wiring has not been altered - we only extended the signal wire.

By the way - a bit more info - there are 18 cameras. The baluns are passive. Could we possibly need to either amplify the signal or install active baluns. Which is more cost effective?

I have never installed IP cameras before but I have a project that it seems would be the best sserved by them. Can anyone recommend a particluar camera. Would I be better off using an analog camera with router, wireless access point, etc.? Thanks in advance.

I just wired an apartment complex (underground with direct burial) and am having problems with some specific cameras (PTZ's) and I now know what the problem is. The voltage drop is too great to operate the cameras. I originally planned on running cat5 for signal and control using 18/2 for power. I have used cat5 before for power and signal but I tripled the cat5 for the power. My wire sales rep told me that there was no need for the 18/2 - that when he was in the business he used only the cat5 for all three functions, only doubling up for power. I told him I had to go 700 feet and he said 'no problem'. Guess what - there is a problem! There is no power available to remote mount the power supply. I really dont want to trench and rebury another 3500 feet of cable (5 runs). I have now thought of bumping up the output so that it is 24VAC at the camera but cant find a power supply to do this. My preliminary calcs show I need +/- 40 volts at the supply. SOMEBODY CORRECT ME IF THIS IS WRONG. Bottom line- please confirm the voltage I need at the power supply and where I can find such a power supply. Thanks so much.

I have some images that are rolling (and shaking a little bit) on the DVR. This is the second DVR with the same problem. Both use Digiflower cards I believe. I have put all camera signals individually on a test monitor and all work fine and look great. The cabling is cat5 and the runs are 400 to 700 feet. This is very frustrating.

All we install (until now) is pc based DVR's. I now have an exisitng client that has a small location that he wants to install a dedicated / Linux embedded DVR. Truthfully, I don't really know anything about them. Can anywone please recommend a very inexpensive unit (sort of bare bones) that has 16 channel capacity. Reliability is the only real concern.

STUPID ME!!! I just realized what you are saying by thinking about the 4 pair and only using one pair for signal. My brain, slow though it may be was imagining the other three pair carrying the power, as I have done before. This brings me to another question. Imagine this hypothetical (real on my job). There is a long +/- 300 foot hallway with cameras located about 40' down perpendicular hallways every 75'. {I hope this is making sense.} Is there a clean way to "T" off of the main hallway run to the other cameras?

I have a project to do that has led me to a couple of questions. What is the proper name for the device that enables you to carry 4 video signals on one cat5? Roughly how much are these? Also, due to the layout of the facility there are a few runs that are +/- 1,100 feet. There is an electrical room about in the middle. It would seem appropriate to run cat5 with an amplifier in this room to kick the signal up to the DVR. Can you please recommend a device to amplify six signals in this fashion and give me a budget for this as well? Thanks in advance.

The cameras are using NVT baluns. The cameras are 12V DC and are being powered from a power supply adjacent to the DVR. Power is being carried on 3 strands per side of the cat5 and signal on the 4th pair. I dont think it is the wire/transmission becasue as I said I have put a test monitor adjacent to the DVR and fed all the channels to it individually and they are perfect. This would also seem to eliminate the power question. Thanks so far and let me know.

Y'all (southern word, sorry) missed my point. I know what baluns are and use them frequently. I also know the difference between active and passive baluns. I don't want to use active baluns becasue I dont want to have to power anything else at the camera. Will an active baluns work on the DVR end and regenerate the signal which is already weakened at that point. My thought was to amplify the signal at the halfway point. It makes more sense to me but I may be wrong. The other question I asked is the name of the device that enables you to carrry 4 signals on one cat5. Thanks again.

Sounds like time to runn new wire. What do you recommend for the distances involved?

By the way - I verified the problem by temporarily mounting a power supply with extension cords and thankfully the image is wonderful. I'm kind of assuming at this point that the control wiring will work as intended.
