Perhaps you did not set "recording continuously" somewhere?

CCTV forum has some limitations. Once you have over 20 posts or so the limitations should be removed.

You did not mention your budget Can get some cheapest IP cam from aliexpress http://www.aliexpress.com/item/SAVE-XMEYE-IP-CAMERA-1-3MP-IR-CUT-960P-1280X960-Network-camera-Indoor-installation-Hikvision-Dome/32417787247.html Personally would recommend more expensive Hikvision IP cam (e.g. http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/151491443713) You'll not need any additional hardware, just install software on Android phone, iPhone or any cheap tablet and your older man can watch it anytime. -
Did you try freedns.afraid.org ?

Recommended vendors for buying Hikvision cameras and NVR
SynologyHosting replied to Alaskan's topic in General Digital Discussion
Good idea to buy it from China (e.g. aliexpress or nasasafe who posted just above) as you could save a lot! Simply confirm your cameras will come with English firmware. And no worries about warranty as if cameras work on arrival, you should not have any issue in the future. In case you get some problems, aliexpress is always on the buyer side. -

You could add JBOD (just a bunch of disks) via external MiniSAS or some kind of USB NAS or drives. What is your current PC based CCTV spec please?
