I have now connected the internet to box thru Ethernet cable direct from modem and still nothing coming up on screen no settings or nothing just live view of cameras :/

I have a H.264 Network DVR. I have used it for about a year with no issues then recently I couldn't get into settings then it stopped recording. I ordered a new hard drive which arrived today I have installed it and now the blue light is showing on front of box so its at least picking the hard drive up now which it wasn't before. I have the hard drive plugged into a pc monitor via a vga cable with no internet connection. Its only for the house not a business or anything. Im a total novice here and know its probably something stupid but what do I do. I can see the cameras on the pc monitor and I have a remote control for box and the mouse. when I point remote at screen I can skip between viewing one camera or multi cameras so the remote works. I just cant get the settings to come up where I use to be able to. how do I sort this any help would be soooooo appreciated.
