    Right on, Prince Harry

I was also at King Khalid Military City/airport. Only Marine attached to Army SF. We (JCSE) were one of the first on ground. I waited for SF to arrive and when they did we moved forward to setup camp.LP's & OP's. We continues to move forward and before ya know it we were in kuwait. I ened up providing the Embassy in Kuwait with Comm's via a TSC-93 van. I was a few blocks down the road from the embassy and SF's had to swap out groups.one in and out. Since I was attached I was left "hanging" by SF in that when the out going left they pulled all security out with them and until the new group arrived I was left sitting like a duck in downtown kuwait. I made the "command" decision to lock the van and set up a watch across the parking lot. I figured if we got hit it would be better to tell a story than be part of one. nothing happened and comms stayed up and running.... I had a wonderful time proving myself amoungst the SF type. it took awhile but they finally accepted me and I received fantastic "training" from them prior to pushing forward. another story, same group; an Officer was checking into the "pit" for duty. I was a SSgt then. He popped his head into our basement hotel and looked around and asked if this was the officers tent? huh? he went on his way. later that night our comms went down hard. alarms went off telling us that the comms was off the air? we had our satellite van/antenna dug in 50 feet from our hotel and I walked over to the antenna only to find this same officer tangled in our camy net & antenna. he was "assigned" to guard duty that night and was walking the permiter and never saw the "hole'. fell into the hole and was the reason for the lost comm. I stood there with my red flashinght and kbar cutting his butt out. tuens out he found this tent with nobody in it, so he moved in. that tent was the SF's CO's tent. CO show up and tossed his butt out and made him walk guard duty. funny as all. and yes Lt., that plug is not intended for your CD player.....which ended up being another comms outage story.........

like a great Commandant once stated; "you can be part of the solution or part of the problem, which are you?" I did not intend to indentify you as a loud mouth..........my intent was to say that "most" loud mouths................ and in closing; it is one thing to be call an idiot, and another to prove it. no, this is not "aimed" at anyone, just something to consider.
  6. goto http://www.no-ip.com and use the tools under "Support" to check to see if you port (8080) is open. your settings look fine except I would turn off the dyndns on the DVR and enable it in your router only! it's under DDNS on the linksys and you should be able to view it if the port is open at your isp.......try using the WAN IP address before you step up to the dyndns name.

    Right on, Prince Harry

remember this; the world is not getting safer and our alliances with "free" countries must remain strong. Reguardless of what the newspapers state or public opinion thinks, the reality is the threat is real and if "we" don't collectively seek them out and kill them, they will try to kill us. oh, another fact. he could have stayed home and played prince. . He is there and is serving his country. Most "loud mouths" have never served or seen first hand what we are up against, in terms of death and suffering. what he experiences there will be in his heart forever and hopefully if and when he reaches power he will rule with humanity over Royality. Been there done that, got the t-shirt. we may not be perfect, but we are pretty darn good at allowing all to live as they wish. and if you don't like it, go live somewhere else! I feel better.......
  8. use http://www.dyndns.org to create a "host name" for your cameras. You need to program your router to update the dyndns host name so that it is kept current. what type of router is it? I would use wireless on this project. you can extend the local routers antenna with a direction antenna and install a access point on the distant end with the same type antenna. the catch here is both the access point and router have to have antenna's that detach... I would also use IR bullet CAMs or armor IR domes to capture the calving. that enviornment is dirty/rough as heck so try to stick with cheaper managable cams. connect the cams into a simple Avermedia 1304 and then to the access point.......KISS fyi.the 1304 does not require a hard drive...............basically acts as a IP server. try looking at this supplier; http://www.wirelessnetworkproducts.com/index.asp
  9. ok, call me stupid. How do you connect a PC to the 1304 via USB? Both connectors are "flat"...........

    PTZ HELP ON THE SVP-DNC10X

when you apply power does it cycle thru power up? PTZ will mechanically move and reposition itself on powerup.........
  11. I don't think you can view video directly from the usb connection. usb connection provides you the ability to save to a usb drive and then view? not sure becasue I've read it but not tried it. Has anyone viewed the 1304 via a USB cable connection?
  12. I'd like to see the snapshots of tested results. start with the camera directly connected to the DVR, then add you baluns with 1 ft. of CAT5, then push it further, thru a punch block, ect. You'll find that the pic also shows a decrease in the TVL as the distance increases. And, if any wiring is not up to spec the pic shows it. CM proves it, but a pic is worth a 1000 words! I did this same testing a couple years back using the CM2 and was amazed at the loss of signal while still maintaining a pic. Passive Baluns & CAT5 are useful but not prefered in my opinion.

    PTZ HELP ON THE SVP-DNC10X

200 ft.? 12VDC won't work on the ptz..........it might work, but it will be flakey as all. bump up to 16VDC and then you should have enough at the end of 200ft. just measure the voltage at the end of 200ft. and you'll see what Ia m talking about.

    License Plates / Vehicle info

I've learned that no matter how much you spend on LPR camera's there is always going to be an issue capturing the plate. ALWAYs. Experience prevails in mapping it out but even then I always have to add something to the mixed depending onthe location, lighting, choke points, ect. I gave up and started using the cheapest ($$$) LPR camera out there and have been happy with the price and results. Bang for the buck! not perfect, but, I tell my clients to buy a gun with the money saved! and most of my "LPR pics" are of vehicles stolen. very rarley used to track a perps vehicle as they like to walk in and drive out. "yep, there goes my car, see the license plate number, it's mine!!!" I go more for Bang for Buck! I'm getting the same plate numbers with the cheaper camera and saving 1000 dollars along the way. not to mention the replacement/maintenance costs are cheaper.

    PTZ HELP ON THE SVP-DNC10X

it should have come with green push on connection points that connect to tht e back of the PTZ. these connection points are detailed in the user manual. But, one is normally for power, video, and PTZ data. the other is for alarm inputs. you identify the proper connector and then identify each connection point. ie. find the power input points and identify + & -; find the video output and identify the + & - (the - should be common to the power & video) you wire a BNC cable to the video output and power input. the last connection point is for the PTZ data. this is marked + & - also. this connects to the DVR data output. ..observe/respect all polarity markings (+ & -) as they matter. you should have received a BNC cable with thinner wires to connect to the green connection block. once connected, check it out. I'd connect at the DVR FIRST before you try to install it. get it working first............then install it. 10X's are nice but they are a bit tight on these green connection points. everything has to be pretty much perfect for it to fit into the base plate.
  18. you might have electrical noise that is caused by another electrical device in the building. During closed hours, have someone watch the pic on the DVR and then start shutting off breakers one at a time. once the pic cleans up, you need to find out what is plugged into that circuit and is causing the noise. I've seen this before; electric fence chargers, forklift chargers, refridgerators, freezers, dryers, ect.
  19. I'd use CAT5 gel-filled direct bury & POE devices. I'd also consider using the Mini 10X series of PTZ's as they perform nicley for the money spent.....and they are IR sensitive. I can buy 3 10X's for the price of 1 expensive type. The chances that you'll use a 30X PTZ to view something 500ft. away is slim. But, your most likely trying to view the smaller features of creatures, right? Better placement of the 10X PTZ's can possible save you money? Wireless? a bit pricey but it will fill the gap where you cannot bury cable? Fiber? depends on how much money you have to spend and how long you are staying? PMA......I don't agree with your comments about "streching" 1Gb CAT6. CAT6 is better based on bandwidth. The actual limitations of networking still remain the same. In my opinion, using CAT6 and then "streching" the equipment limitations is a waste of money on CAT6. If engineered properly from the start without any streching, this system will work as installed. I understand your reasoning as I use to strech also......but I learned that streching is setting yourself up for problems later on.[/url]
  20. yes, you can make a computer into a DVR, BUT, the computer specs need to support DVR card. I thought I might have said you can buy a DVR card you can get one via online or via resellers here in the forum. you'll need to find either on your own. the process; wake up, SSS, coffee with cream, surf Forums, check email, eat a baggle, more coffee, more surfing, then; - update PC OS & Drivers, virus check may also be a good idea. take virus software OFF after you check. - install DVR card into PC - more coffee, maybe a doughnut or poptart? - install DVR software - connect camera(s) to test - test camera/software. - connect to network - test network - call a friend and bragg about your new video security system......... - post a link here on the Forum to showoff your hard work Your questions are way too broad. You need to read as many posts on this forum and then start asking more specific questions that specifically target a manufacture or product. Most of your questions will be answered if you take time to look. semper

Storage - Direct Access or NAS/SAN?

direct server access is faster BUT you'll most likely access via client PC or VPN. That much storage will create some heat, no matter how you build it. I'd go with a SAN. much easier to manage, considering your storage requirements. I have a client that has 8 Servers with several hundred cameras on a fiber backbone with a SAN. They push the video from the Servers to the SAN after hours. They only retain 1 day of video on Servers, all else is pushed. The SAN will also be a great place to store the "incident" video. Incident video is all that video you want/need to save......and over time it will take up space. Centralizing that is more efficient. GOOD Archivers are extremely hard to find so make sure you "demo" that side of the software BEFORE you purchase.

    protecting DVR from theft

be careful of pushing USB beyond the 15ft. cable. my experience is that the distance causes problems in the link, despite advertise active USB marketing. I would not do it.

    protecting DVR from theft

Avermedia 1704Hybrid with Axis 207MW's. 207's are installed at the DVR site using local static IP & port. 1704 is programmed to 207's public IP address & port assigned. 1704 can be located anywhere "off-site" therefore making it impossible for anyone to get the video. just another trick if you can afford it. USB? DVR has to be able to do USB storage.....use a 15ft. active USB cable with a USB drive connected to the DVR. Hide the USB drive in a desk drawer, false wall, ect. USB canle is just another cable........ hey Russ.........I like the sticker....

    protecting DVR from theft

couple things, you can; - hide it. - bolt it down - lock it in a box - remote the video storage via a USB storage type device - setup a dummy DVR that "looks on" for the thieves to take - instal a second IP camer for off-site recording of the DVR itself
