I felt like registering just to post this info somewhere. I spent a few hours yesterday trying to get a Swann DVR8-8075 to succeed in its email test. I tried Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail, and a local server. It would always fail authentication. The usual suggestion online is to try an unencrypted port 25 SMTP server but that's becoming more and more impractical.
Apparently the problem is the Swann DVR is using an obsolete form of SSL. Most email servers do not allow its use. Google however has a page that allows you to use a less strict mode.

This allows the Swann to successfully send an email.
