  1. Something like this?: http://www.vikingelectronics.com/products/view_product.php?pid=440 I have this catalog. I remember the unit being kind of pricey with the camera. But they sell the same enclosure without camera so you can use your own. No lighting though. How about a motion light?

    Demo system for walkthroughs

Very cool stuff. Did you see the demo video? I have an install in Vegas scheduled for the end of March. I'm trying hard to push it back a week or two and catch the show too. The last ISC West I made it to was '04 or '05. EagleEye, The exhibitors at these trade shows are masters of portable demo's. I bet you could find a few options...
  3. That's the second funniest thing I've read on this board in a long time!

    Balun questions

That number of twists per inch could be right. I've never heard that before. But it must be the minimum number of twists per inch or something. And if you look close at the first picture of twisted pair in this thread you can actually tell that the Orange and Brown pairs are twisted tighter then the Green and Blue pairs. And the Green pair is twisted tighter then the Blue. I don't know a lot about the electrical engineering aspect of twisted pair But as a voice/data guy I've punched down a lot of Cat5 in the last 10 years and as long as I can remember the twist rate has varied.
  5. For contracts this seems to be the recommendation that pops up most often: https://www.kirschenbaumesq.com/alarm2.htm
  6. Good point on the cable grip CC. Do you know of any that can be used with pre-connectorized cables? When worried about supporting weight I use electrical boxes instead of bang boxes. All the gang boxes I have seen use 6/32 screws for cover plates. Regular electrical boxes use 8/32. 8/32 will hold a ceiling paddle fan. It should hold cameras with no problems. Also check out the round electrical boxes. They too have threaded cover plates available and I think they look better with bullet cams then rectangle.

Glad I could help. I too learn something everytime I read the forums.

    Balun questions

I don't think it matters in this application but, Actually there is a difference in twist rate. It is designed to reduce cross talk. My tester shows the length of each pair in the cable and the tighter the twist the longer the pair. But no worries, it is only a matter of inches over the length of a typical run.

    Demo system for walkthroughs

This one is PC based, but it's cool and it's a kit like what you are looking for: http://avigilon.com/products/rdk/ Those travel cases are available in all shapes and sizes. Why not just make your own? You could have a custom case for the specific equipment you want to carry. Please post pictures of whatever you come up with!

    rg59u twist on bnc problem

Been there seen that... I like the little stripper I use but it seems like more often then not I too have one or two strands of shield that gets wrapped around the center conductor. It's funny because other then that it makes a very clean cut.
  11. I have used http://photobucket.com for years. Other options are http://flickr.com/ and http://smugmug.com smugmug charges a fee but has some cool features.

    averdigieb1504 mpeg4 security dvr

Were they SV hard drives? Reason I ask is because Seagate SV35's are the hard drives that have been recommended to me by 2 other DVR tech support departments. I figured it was the defacto Hdd for at least the low/medium end DVR's.

I figured you had a few. I thought I saw many angles. Good job! By the way, I'm over in Ukiah. So howdy Neighbor! But no worries, I get my own paper delivered...

    Coming to America

Crime ridden area's in Miami? Say it isn't so! Actually I hear ya, We stayed in Aventura back in November. I sat next to a cop on the plane and he had me all paranoid as he was pointing out the bad areas on the map. Luckily he approved of the Hampton Inn we were staying at... So I guess my only suggestion is to look on a map and start calling hotels on the outlining areas. All the "Miami" addressed hotels will fill with out of towners before the surrounding areas. Aventura was only about 10 minutes from the airport and has a big mall right there. As a matter of fact our install was at the mall! Good luck with the appointment. Hope it is nothing serious.
  19. I tried a cable caster once. unfortunately it tangled almost immediately. I remember not being able to open the closed spin caster reel and it got thrown in a box somewhere. So I have to say I was not impressed. Besides as others have mentioned; All the ceilings I work in are already packed full of other mechanical services. Between duct work, conduit, and ceiling wires you would have to be dead-on with every shot to beat the speed and accuracy of glow rods and boom poles. Also, I am suppose to install cable supports every 4 feet. So I have to open every other ceiling tile anyway. That being said... I like new toys as much as the next guy. If I had any more room on the truck I might be tempted to pickup one of these: http://thelaserline.com/

    XP Embedded wifi phone

Rory are you looking for a cell phone that supports wifi? or are you looking for a wireless VoIP phone running windows? There are a lot of cell phones running windows mobile that are wifi enabled. If it's wireless VoIP you are looking for check out: http://www.windowsfordevices.com/news/NS3789215202.html and actually http://www.windowsfordevices.com has articles on a lot of windows embedded devices. There are a lot of wifi VoIP phones out there too. I don't know off hand of any windows embedded though. http://www.voipsupply.com/index.php?cPath=95_115 Have you checked out googles Android project? All open source. Cool stuff. http://code.google.com/android/ I would concentrate on Android if wifi cell phones is what you are after. It seems pretty much everything google touches turns to gold.
  21. Yep, I understand the ground you are talking about. So the electrical outlets have 3 prongs? did you test the outlets for ground? Use something like this to easily test outlets: If the outlet has a good ground you can use this device to easily ground your devices: You plug this into the outlet. The recessed hole you see in the middle is a screw that replaces the faceplate screw on the outlet to hold this in place. Then you use the wing nut to clamp your ground wire. It uses the ground prong of the outlet which would be better then nothing... http://www.ditekcorp.com/product-details.asp?ProdKey=24
  22. Is there another ground wire from the case to the control board of the PS? Or can you tell if the PS control board is isolated from the metal case? I bet it will function ok without the ground connected. But problems will arise if the case becomes energized. In other words if a power lead became disconnected and was touching the metal case you would cause an electrocution hazard. Because without the ground the case would now have electrical "potential". Meaning if someone walked up and touched the case and the person was grounded somehow it could cause a shock. If the ground wire was connected to ground then the power lead touching the case should cause a breaker to trip. Eliminating the shock hazard. If there is no building ground available it is unlikely someone walking up to the PS would be grounded, but somethings that could ground a person would be standing barefoot on a concrete floor, touching an electrical conduit, water pipe, gas pipe, ect. I know some stuff about electricity but don't know a lot about electronics. But if the PS control board is also connected to the metal case it may reference that ground for voltage regulation or some other electrical magic these electronic devices do. Does the AVR in the battery backup work without a building ground? What will you do with the ground prong on the power cord? I'm guessing no building ground means 2 prong outlets? In buildings without a ground I change out the outlet with a GFCI outlet. They are about 10 bucks here in the States and do a good job of protecting against shock. Plus it gives me some place for my ground prong. But I don't know if they give a proper ground reference for electronics that may need it.

    Tropical Storm Noel

Dang, sorry to hear you almost got took out Rory. So it looks like it's headed out. That should be good news for you scorpion eh? When does hurricane season end? I'll be in Miami for a phone system install the end of the month. I don't wish anything tragic but a little somethin, somethin would be exciting for this Nor Cal native. Even a little thunderstorm would go a long way towards my WoW factor.
