    Neighbor surveillance including my property

I'm a mechanic by trade and have 4 motorcycles and 2 cars of my own that I work on. I also buy dirt bikes that aren't running, engines that don't work, axles that need rebuilding, and transmissions that need a refresh. I fix them and sell them for a small profit. I am rarely in the garage past 8pm, never running an engine later than 7pm, nothing is left outside, and my property management company knows all about it and doesn't care as long as I'm not running a shop out of the garage with people bringing their stuff to me and paying me to fix it. Basically, I'm allowed to make money from what I do, but it can't be a business. The noise complaints where the police department was called involved: 1 call at 2pm on a Saturday when I was tuning the carburetor on one of my bikes, 2 calls at on a Thursday afternoon around 4pm when I had 2 colleagues from work over for a small BBQ and working on one of my cars (1 call for the "noise" and 1 call because one of the guys had unknown to me parked his truck in front of their house...yes, you read that right, they called the cops because someone parked at the curb in front of their house), 1 call at 8am on a Tuesday because now when I take the bike to work, I start it up by the garage instead of down at the street, and another 8am call because I let my stock diesel truck warm up in the driveway.

    Neighbor surveillance including my property

Talked to local PD about it yesterday and they said that, as suspicious as it is, it is legal but to take note of when in went up in relation to the false/inflated claims and to keep a log of things that happen in case it ends up going to court for harassment. Also, if there is ever a break in, inform the responding officer about this current situation and they will be asked to relinquish the recordings from that camera, if it magically did not record the incident then they will be brought in for questioning. "That neighbor doesn't like you, they have a camera that watches your garage, your garage gets broken into, conveniently that camera didn't record anything, they would be a prime suspect."

    Neighbor surveillance including my property

I haven't talked to them about the new camera yet, I spoke with them last week regarding the calls and the camera was new since I left for work this morning, going to call them tomorrow when I can. Came on here to see if there was a quick definitive answer. I understand that each jurisdiction may vary but figured that a forum based more or less on security cameras might understand privacy regulations. I've seen situations where the forums sometimes know the law better than an officer. In terms of both when an individual is actually breaking a law but it is not being enforced, and also when officers is trying to submit a charge when the law has not been broken. My feeling towards it is I will not point my cameras in any manner that I do not wish them pointed in my direction, if I live in a condo with basically only a porch in the back, I will not place a camera pointing straight out to see everything in the surrounding area. Basically if the view of the camera in comprised of at least 75% of the property which it is installed it's all good. In my case, every single one of my cameras is pointed primarily at my property with minimal view of anyone else's. This neighbor's new camera (we all know how wide angle they are now) has my property in AT LEAST 75% of its view
  4. Been a while since I've posted on here, but lately I have been having an issue with a neighbor that has called the police multiple times with complaints against me and what I do in my garage and then contacted my landlord demanding that I be evicted (landlord forwarded me the emails and explained the phone calls). The police haven't even so much as walked across the driveway to my door to discuss any of the incidents which automatically tells me that there isn't a single law that has been broken, not even to say "hey, would you mind closing up a little earlier" or "can you try to keep certain activities to earlier in the day." Today when I came home from work, I saw this neighbor finishing up the installation of a new camera and seemed surprised to see me, guess they weren't expecting me to be home until later. Anyway, I have no issue with someone wanting to have coverage of their home. However, this camera is positioned at the front corner of the roof, their property from the house to my driveway is only about 6' wide in that section and extends about 20' back where it terminates at the fence of their back yard which reaches about 8' high. The problem that I have is that where their fence starts, so does my garage, and anytime the door is open, that camera can see every square foot. Would this have been suspicious a year ago? Absolutely not, but in light of the recent events I believe that the new unit was installed specifically to watch my garage. Is this legal? I went to the police station last week to request copies of these calls which they had no problem giving since the claims were against me, all caller information was edited out but process of elimination prevails since there hasn't been a peep brought to my attention from any other neighbor...that all personally know the landlord. I have nothing to hide and even offered the camera footage of my garage to the police department in the wake of these claims and they respectfully declined. The fact of the matter is, what happens in my garage is my business and someone else having video footage of the exact contents that it holds and also seeing when my home is empty by the vehicles that depart does NOT sit well with me.

Why is my system constantly "Saving"

I went with Sannce based upon the outweighing number of positive reviews, but after doing the install and getting the system up and running, I saw just how basic the interface was. I have not had a single issue with the cameras themselves, just the box. Do y'all think there would be any issue upgrading the box and then go for higher end cameras in the future? I'm not a total techie, but the only issue I can see would be the DVR being able to handle much higher quality video than the cameras can provide, which I'm ok with for now. When it does record, the video is pretty good during the day and decent enough at night to be able to read the license plate of my truck, which gets parked almost at the edge of the IR range of one camera. When I change out the cameras I will definitely go with CAT5 cable instead of the siamese coax mainly to eliminate a lot of bulk cable.
  6. I went on the lower end for my system and got a Sannce because I figured even a cheap system was better than no system. With the rise in break ins in my area, I had to do something and the Sannce was about the only thing that fit my budget at the time. I set up motion detection zones and to only record for 120 seconds after motion stopped. I do not check the video as often as I should but do it every couple weeks or so. The last 3 times I've checked, as soon as I power on the TV, there is the white Sannce screen with "Saving Data..." at the bottom. The first time I let it sit for a few hours but nothing changed, so I rebooted it, I was still fiddling with stuff so I didn't even bother looking at the video, I just figured it was running low on memory and adjusted some timing and delays on the cameras to conserve hard drive space, as well as set it to overwrite when full. The second time it happened, I rebooted but everything looked normal, even the video of me coming home that day. Today it happened again and the only recordings that were on there were me leaving and coming home from work...the day after I last rebooted it. It is showing that it still has 700GB of available storage space (1TB hard drive). What is the deal?

    DVR Ventilation

Got it figured out, found a setup from AC Infinity that has 2 separate 80mm fans and comes with a speed controller. It will plug in on the same power strip as the DVR and camera power leads.
  8. I don't think anyone can go much cheaper on a system than I did, Sannce 8 channel, but it works. I am curious how to delete files to free up some space on the hard drive, such as me walking back and forth to see if the motion activated record is working, along with other unnecessary video like me coming home from work or working in the garage. The only option I have found in the system settings is to backup the data, nothing about deleting it. Anyone who has worked with a Sannce system knows that the "manual" that comes with it is mediocre at best. Thankfully, from what I can tell, all of the components are pretty universal so I can upgrade piece by piece as money permits and eventually get something that is a little more in depth on its capabilities. Any suggestions for the interim?
  9. I got my camera system done over the weekend and all is well except 1 camera (the closest to the DVR) is not transmitting video but it does have power. I already tried putting a different camera there to see if something happened to it to no avail. I tested all of these cameras, with the cable lengths that are on them, in my living room before mounting and they worked fine. I think something might have happened to the cable while running everything through the attic. It is not pointing to a critical zone, that position was an afterthought of "I still have a couple channels left, I guess I'll put one here." I am not thrilled about the thought of army crawling through my attic again and snaking my way between trusses and under the central A/C and heating ducts. I did not imagine how big of a PITA it would be and just how big of a bundle would be going to the box. I am already considering ripping everything out and going with CAT cable. With 4 bundled pair cable I can run 2 cameras per length of cable with power/video Balums and it will be much lighter and easier to handle. Are these cameras (non-HD) sending enough data where running CAT-6 will make a difference or will CAT-5 do just fine? Also, should I go get the cable and connections and just get it done and over with or should I hold off until there is something that really needs to be addressed since the rest of the system is fine right now?

    DVR Ventilation

I know the "Where should I put my DVR so that it won't get stolen?" question has been answered before. My question is in regards to getting air to it. I am renting my house so putting in a false wall or cutting in is out. There is not a good location inside to put the DVR where it can't be found relatively easily (no high cabinets that you can't see the top shelf, no little nooks anywhere near a power source, etc). So I came up with a pretty genius (I think) idea, put it in the garage inside a 240V switch box near my welder. The cables will easily run through the massive 1" conduit that is anything but out of place on the panel and it's easily locked. My problem is, how can I go about getting air to the unit without cutting holes all over it and ruining the disguise?

    New from CA

Brand new here and in lieu of finding out the history of my neighborhood, I decided it was time to take some security measures. Got myself a budget CCTV setup in addition to an alarm system that I will be installing this weekend. I don't expect my cameras to be the cat's meow, but it's a start until I gain some more knowledge and gives me the ability to put some money aside over time to get a higher end system rather than saving now for a system that I won't be able to afford while recovering from a break in.
