    Good/cheap 4 & 8 channel stand alone DVRs

From brand name manufacturers, there are only few that you can find in sub-$1000 range... I have few hundred brand new Sanyo 6 channel DVRs with various hard drive capacities selling around $600.00 - $700.00 range (dependent on internal drive configuration). Very easy to use, embedded system, Internet ready and the works...

    school

IP solution will be ideal, but will be the most expensive route... besides major considerations should be given for the entire bandwidth requirements. We have done few schools even recently with similar parameters, except we use the conventional minidomes and decent DVR combination. A camera was designated per classroom and there were total of 11 classrooms. What end up happening was that the school created low security level usernames and passwords that were assigned for each port (video feed) without any possibilities for the user(s) to be able to change system integrity. To accomplish this feature, the parents had a choice to use IE or remote viewer software, each of which do not provide any DVR control features. Then such usernames and passwords were distributed among the parents. Each time the parent connected to the DVR, all they were able to do was to view the respective camera of a classroom and the DVR was programmed to "mask" all the other ports... This is a very simple and yet powerful feature that many decent DVR come with... The only restriction that was imposed was number of users that could get into the DVR simultaneously that could effect the available bandwidth. In the last case, the school decided view of a port of the DVR no more than 5 minutes per connection and the DVR was programmed to accept no more than 12 simultaneous sessions. The school had the choice to increase these number of connections, but decided that 12 sessions were mode than adequate. The true number actually turned up to be no more than six sessions...

    Recommendations for a DVR

One of my favorites is the product line from CBC America, which is a major brand manufacturer and has been there for a long time... covering both 8 channel and 16 channel and you can get them with our without hard drives. Very easy to add hard drives, CD or DVD burners (if you want), remote control allowing to program the system easier and best of all, the hardware comes with 3 years warranty. What I am referring to is as follows: - http://www.computarganz.com/product_series.cfm?series_id=11 Dependent how you configure your drives, you can have up to 3TB internal storage... and most of the these DVRs will fall under your budget. We sold quite of few of these DVRs. They take PATA hard drives and as long as you use surveillance grade drives, these solutions will last...

    Cant access DVMRe through brower

IE7 works fine. However, if you intend to have full control on the programming of this DVR, it is recommended to use GE version of remote client. With IE7 (or even IE6) it will give you mainly view, but no control or change of the system parameters.

    what is "blc" setting???

Normally you do not have to touch BLC for most, including this camera... before you turn it on, you can tell us type of lens that you are using.. Is it a manual IRIS or AutoIRIS version and if so, is it DC or Video version? What will help if you can give us the model number of the lens... You can turn on the BLC, but chances are good that you will not see much a difference... Your choice for the camera is a good one and specs are here: http://www.computarganz.com/file.cfm?id=321 I have used this camera before... and with areas that had more than usual light change activities.. instead of concentrating on the BLC adjustments or any adjustments on the camera, focus on the lens and make sure that its settings are correct, as most of such problems could happen because of incorrect lens usage. Let us know.

    CCTV cameras 'taught to listen'

Here is something interesting coming into the market... - Scientists are working on adapting the software to react to crowd noise. CCTV cameras which use artificial intelligence software are being developed to "hear" sounds like windows smashing, researchers have revealed. University of Portsmouth scientists are working on adapting the software so it can also react to crowd noise. Crimes would be captured on camera faster and response times improved. The news comes after the BBC learned councils in southern England routinely used powers brought in to fight terrorism and crime to spy on people. Figures obtained by BBC South showed the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act (Ripa) was used more than 750 times by the councils in 2007/08. If in a car park someone smashes a window, the camera would turn to look at them and the camera operator would be alerted Dr David Brown The new three-year surveillance study is being funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). The existing software is sophisticated enough to identify minor visual cues such as whether a car aerial is up or more complex activity such as violent behaviour, researchers said. Dr David Brown, from the University of Portsmouth, said: "The visual-recognition software will be able to identify visual patterns but for the next stage we want to get the camera to pivot if it hears a certain type of sound. "So, if in a car park someone smashes a window, the camera would turn to look at them and the camera operator would be alerted. 'Read' profiles "The longer artificial intelligence is in the software the more it learns." He added: "Later versions will get cleverer as time goes on, perhaps eventually being able to identify specific words being said or violent sounds. "In identifying sound we are looking for the shapes of sound. "In the same way, if you close your eyes, you can trace the shape of a physical object and 'read' its profile with your hand, we are developing shapes of sound so the software recognises them." By the end of the study, the researchers hope to have generated algorithms - a mathematical formula for solving problems - that can be used inside existing CCTV software. Then each successive generation of algorithms would become more sophisticated as they "learn" what they are looking and listening out for.

Today you'll make history with Firefox

Here is an article about Opera's latest competing against Firefox... http://www.download.com/8301-2007_4-9973363-12.html If you want to believe what this editor says, apparently Opera's latest is better even though it is still an older code... I guess IE nobody really cares for any longer... I used Firefox and Thunderbird from their inception and stuck with it all this time... It works, less headaches than IE... I also use Opera once in a while.. It is a good web browser... I guess it is a preference more than anything else.

He speaks up for all of us!

Check this out: If this is not a reality, not sure what is... Before we know it (or can do anything about it), this becomes law and then what else in the pipe that they do not say now that eventually will become reality? Like, having a new currency for NAU, open borders, new policies, etc... Does this sound like EU all over again? How about SAU (South American Union)? How about AU (Asian Union)? Well, welcome to the path of New World Order!

    Digital Logic

Hey guys, has anyone ever worked with DVRs made by a Korean company called Digital Logic? They produced Linux based DVRs for over 10 years and now from what we understand, they are out of the game... Have a customer that has over 100 of these units and requires service... Any sources on information will be appreciated. Thanks,

http://www.comartsystem.com/AM/PRODUCTS/dvr_board/hicap/ Company called Comart System and they are located in Southern California. I confirmed that what Digital Logic has are this company's boards and software that is similar even though is not exactly the same... I will find out more next week when I meet with them... My hat is off for our friend Rory... This guy always comes through... Do not know how he is doing this, but so far, well... he is the best! If only he could write code in C++ and work with Linux

He speaks up for all of us!

Well, it is bulbs today, smoking in your house (which I think is already implemented in several counties), seeing you wife and kids, what you can and should not eat... What is next?? Time spent with the family, where you can or should not travel and when, may be even we have to obtain permission to use the bathroom.. Last time I checked, we still live in U.S. right? or is it already called North American Union?? According to Bush, NAU in inevitable...

    Bosch Flexidome or GE Ultraview

Well, I will beg different... GE WDR models are not as good as Bosch counterpart... You will see picture quality differences. Bosch is easier to program and calibrate vs. GE version. Besides, Bosch provides full (3) years warranty with 24 hours replacement availability. Even though GE offers the same 3 years warranty, but I will not say the same about their repair/replacement program. Bosch tech support is much more knowledgeable vs. GE, which uses services available outside of the country dependent when you call... From my past experience, if I had the choice between these models, I will go with Bosch hand down with no worries... Any reasons why you want to use WDR technology camera indoors?

High Heat Install! Arizona! It's Summer!

Simple answer? get a decent housing with good sealers and with heater and blower built in... regardless how high or low the temperature gets in Arizona, decent housing will work... I worked with quite of few people in Arizona and all have few of the packages that I am referring too.. When heat goes up during the day, the fans do excellent job to maintain constant temperature for the cameras or at night, heater kicks in and maintains the same.. Just do not go with some cheapo crap just for sake of doing it, rather go with some good brand package and there are many to choose from, that will do the job... All the majors make them... and you have the choice for various configurations from tubular type, to rectagular or some design version and then you can get them all aluminum or high-impact polymer construction.. One of my favorite is from American Dynamics - ADCH10HBMT8 that comes with heater and blower built in and works very well... pricing should be around $100.00, but it delivers the goods..

    Changing DVMRe-16CT-80 harddrive?

todd2, heat is what kills drive mainly... From the design stand point, I know that the surveillance version drives come with more heat dissipating components that have much higher tolerance levels than the commercial versions... Also, experience is an irreplaceable animal... Based on many years of use of the standard commercial grade drives and observing many problems, failures, etc... it was an obvious choice to go with this new grade drives... Well, these drives are not perfect, but provide my lower level of failures than conventional drives. By no means these drives will conform with your "shock" tests either. If you want these type of setup, then there are shock absorber components that you can add with drives and make it even better, but only if it is required..

    Changing DVMRe-16CT-80 harddrive?

We use Seagate surveillance version hard drives... compared to commercial versions... surveillance versions are designed to operate 24/7... and it may cost few bucks more, but well worth it... Get the retail version, so that you can have five years warranty... if need help, let me know... I have plenty in stock for 250GB, 500GB and 750GB... Seagate announced that majority or if not all their PATA drives are on the way out and no replacements may be avail... they still have them, but it is matter of time when they stop making them..

    Changing DVMRe-16CT-80 harddrive?

Contact GE and get their latest firmware for your unit... that will solve the hard drive recognition problem... and then you can easily install the utility...

    Changing DVMRe-16CT-80 harddrive?

Very easy to do... you can add two 500GB for total of 1TB or even two 750GB drives to get to 1.5TB internal storage... Make sure that you configure the drives correctly as master and slave... There is one more thing to do after the drives are changed... you need to install special utility available only from GE (you can download it from their website after you create an account), that will add your remote view control and features.. and that is all... We have done quite of few upgrades like this and it works perfectly!
