  1. Performance is better in a longer run using these PASSIVE baluns that I used in so many years... I know you misread what I said about Pelco - If you read your own words, you were referring to Pelco ACTIVE baluns and not the passive baluns... and that is why my statement read " As long as you are not comparing these passive baluns performance with any, including Pelco version, then the results are exactly what we stipulated. I am sure you have access for the best cables, but most do not... Most use the cheapest CAT5E available... With our tests and going with cheaper ones, we were not able to get decent picture quality in more than 800' vs. 1,500'+ easy stretch for cables made by West Penn and similar caliber manufacturers. Well, I am not sure who copied who's design and obviously that is what you are referring to... I never used GVI, so I am not going to make any comments. However, if the design is the same, is GVI using the same identical components and are you able to stretch such cables more than 1,000', lets say 1,500' in length or more? By performing stress test, you can tell the difference, if any... If they are identical, then I am sure you will choose the cheaper of both Is the pricing from GVI around $30.00 per PAIR of these baluns, less or more??
  2. Great... However, if your are paying the above price, you are paying too much.. As long as you are not comparing these passive baluns performance with any, including Pelco version, then the results are exactly what we stipulated. I can tell you that once you buy CAT5E cable with continuous 1,500 or close to 2,000', then you will see the obvious differences... From my perspective, any CAT5E wire that needs reaching more than 1,500' will require active baluns, as such project always have multiple runs exceeding more than 2,000'...
  3. Survtech, who is the maker and the model number of the baluns that you use and what is the average cost you paid for pair of such baluns?? Just curious what people use mainly.. and is the cost of such baluns is the driving force or is it something else? We all understand limitations of such technology and stick with what works for us.. but what makes our days go by even faster is when you have a chance to use some new gadget that surpasses limitations on what currently is on hand.. and my recommendation is to try what http://videobaluns.com/ produce... If you want, I can send you samples for your own test and evaluation... and let us know what you think. Let me know and thanks.
  4. Rory, the passive baluns come with or without surge protectors and in some cases, manufacturers like to charge higher price with baluns with surge protectors... I am not sure breaking 1,000' CAT5E run using a passive baluns is so sticky... for many at least... NVT states that their passive baluns are good up to 750'... most of everyone follow the same distance restriction.. However... I stated before in different posts and I will state again that there is at least one manufacturer that we used quite of few years that makes passive baluns that work perfectly over 1,000' without any of the above mishaps on video quality... The company is called http://videobaluns.com/ and the make only (4) products - three of which are passive baluns and one is passive 16 channel video hub... After going through close over 10K+ of this company's baluns, we have enough evidence and proof that these baluns surpass the industry specific balun specs.. and in some cases, we were able to run close to 2,000' and no visible change in the picture quality... You have to make sure to use quality CAT5E cable of course, but even then, the pricing between cheap cable and more expensive cable is marginal... Now, what makes this company's products any better??? They do take their design very seriously and add top notch components that always make the difference... Also, the surge protectors are inclusive with each balun, thus no cost difference at all... and compare that with NVT and others... Pricing is very reasonable.. averaging around $30.00 per pair of these baluns and they work exceptionally good.. very easy to install and with no tools requirements... I will say that anything over 2,000' distance or project specific requirements, we do mix both passive and active baluns.. and they work very well side by side.. However, to undermine how passive baluns work vs. opinions based on what NVT and others interject, all it does is that it creates opportunities for such companies to sell more of their more expensive solutions, including active baluns... If you need more info, please let me know.

    Baluns

Depends on your application... If you are running this cable to control PTZ dome, then you can use one of the pairs for data, another pair for video, another one for power and extra pair for spare... If you are running this cable for just a fixed camera, then dependent on your cable runs, it may not be cost effective, as balun costs run an average of $30.00 per pair... and instead, you can use Siamese cable....

    Megapower LT reboots randomly

AD-Tech are ok people and they have to follow certain guidelines and most of the time they are good... In some cases, well, training is what is missing or better yet, hands on experience not avail... Thus they have no choice but to give you what someone else wrote on the paper... rather knowing exactly how to fix anything... In generally speaking, they do good job overall... I do not think it is your power causing the problem... If it did, then you should have had the problem immediately after you installed first time.. so do not waste your money on BPS... You did not clarify if this unit is under warranty or not... If it is under warranty, they have to fix it.. If you still in touch with the dealer who sold it, then they can make the arrangement. Otherwise, let me know, and I can help. CD sets for Ultra Intellex is not a problem to get, how to use it can be, well serious pain...

    GE DVMRe ct-16 Video Burner

Dependent when you purchased this model and if it did not come with CD or DVD burner, then you can add it.. Here is what you do: first you need to contact GE technical support (or better yet, if you already have online account with them, even better) and get the firmware upgrade available for your model... The earlier versions did not come with burners, however newer version do... After you get done with the firmware upgrade, then you should be able to add CD burner or even DVD burner... We have done few of these type of conversions not only for this model, but also on older machines... and works fine... The trick is to get the latest firmware that supports CD or DVD burner... We did not even ask which make and model that GE supports... We used Sony's offered models and they all worked then, and chances are that they will again too... Let me know if you need any additional info.

    Megapower LT reboots randomly

You have done exactly what anyone will do - change the power supply first... Chances are very good that one of the cards or even the main board could be damaged... Normally when we have a problem with similar system, we do not even waste any time to talk to tech support - they will not be able to make your problem to go away Rather we request RMA to send such system back for repairs... Basically not much you can do with this system for repairs... So far we tried to perform some repairs on similar systems, but AD does not share any information nor any parts except in limited basis and when such system is out of warranty..... What I will suggest is to double check the power connections to this box and make sure that nothing is loose inside of the cage... otherwise, the quickest way to get it fixed is to send it in for repairs... and hope that it still is under warranty... Otherwise, the cost for such systems are fairly low to purchase brand new...

    Haze using baluns

This "haze" could be a cause of the some electrical equipment or lighting that is too close to the CAT5E cable... and the recourse is either find the source and move the cable at least 5+ feet or change the baluns that come with built in surge and noise suppressors... Many in the market and running around $30.00 for pair of such baluns.

    Two standalone DVRs

Try CBC DR8N (8 channel embedded series) and CBC DR16N (16 channel embedded series)... Besides, three years warranty is standard from CBC...

    Cat 5e and Power

Check the brand of the manufacturer and specs that call for CAT5E operating in 350MHZ range... they are commonly available, but be careful on cable that has no writings or shows the cable is operating at 100MHZ... You should find them locally and save some money that will add up as a shipping costs if you were to order online. The best CAT5E cables are operating at 350MHZ range, which also gives you forward looking equipment upgrade possibilities that will allow you to change equipment down the road that may require much higher bandwidth, that you many not need at the moment.... You can always run 18/2 besides CAT5E, but what is the justification? If your runs are less than 100', a pair of CAT5E will suffice this requirement. Unless if you intend to run power more than 100' in stretch, then no need to run 18/2... Even though having extra pair with higher gage rating will never hurt to have... Passive video baluns pricing has come down substantially and running an average of $30.00 for pair of such baluns... so do your calculation per run and compare with RG-59 cable runs and see which is more cost effective.

    Where to buy??

Nick, have you done your research on costs associated with IP cameras and software licensing costs? Retail stores have razor thin security budgets and knowing that fact, I am not sure if the costs have been considered... Typical IP camera costs knowadays run from $850.00 and up dependent who the manufacturer is.. and also dependent on the software, it could cost you license fee per camera connection... Just trying to understand if the cost is not an issue... Much more cost effective solutions for retail includes minidome cameras with build in lenses and simple to function DVRs... and ability to connect them remotely via Internet...

    Web based PTZ camera controller

I am not familiar with this product line, but took the liberty to do some research... Your controller has DB-9 pin connector on rear allows for easy connection of RS-485 control lines... but that is where it stops stating how... However, little more research on their website here: http://www.eaglepantilt.com/PDFs/Rem%20PT%20w%20port%20server.pdf clearly shows how to do it... as follows: In this same url above, it explains the following: PC’s running Windows with Eagle™ control software or user developed software. This could also be an Eagle™ controller with another SitePlayer Telnet converter and a RS232 to RS-485 converter as well. Looks like all you have to do is to contact them and ask for their Eagle control software and that is all... I am sure they will also give you the RS485 wiring diagram that will show how to connect your controller. Hope this helps.
