So far I've tried using gmail with either 2-step verification or allowing less secure apps, using gmail on aspmx.l.google.com, using my own ISP (sky.com), and also smtp2go. I get either a "failed connect" or sometimes a "username error" message, although I am certain my credentials are correct.

Hi - I am in the same situation as you. I daren't admit how long I have spent trying out various combinations, different SMTP servers, different ports, with and without SSL, different DNS settings... but I eventually contacted Yale: Their response was that "email service alerts are no longer available for our CCTV systems"! I think I'm going to take mine back to the shop...
