  1. I wanted to purchase a class 3 POE switch for my upcoming 8 ACTI cameras. We also happen to have 3 VoIP telephones in the office that could use POE. After doing research, I've found this 24 Port Cisco model seems to suit my needs and I also love the fact that it has a lifetime warranty. I think this model is also fanless but I'm not sure. Anybody use these guys before?
  2. Btw. does anybody know a good CCTV installer in Los Angeles?
  3. I purchased it from Amazon.com. I'll have it installed in the next couple of weeks and I'll let you all know how it goes. It seems to have a lot more power available than the Cisco and it's more flexible.
  4. I went ahead and pulled the trigger on this switch actually after doing a ton of research: http://www.smc-asia.com/microsite/smart_switch_web/smcgs18p_smart.html It only has a 1 year warranty but the AmEx corp card will add another year to that making it 2 years...
  5. My camera manufacturer's sales rep recommended this Intellinet 16 port switch: http://www.intellinet-network.com/en-US/products/6845-16-port-fast-ethernet-rackmount-poe-switch# *Update I guess that model has been discontinued as this is the new version: http://www.intellinet-network.com/en-US/products/9693-16-port-fast-ethernet-poe-switch
  6. The other option would be to buy 2 Netgear GS110TPs. The Cisco 24 port isn't fanless I've realized.
  7. Hi everyone, I'm still trying to wrap my head around all the technologies and doing reading on the forum. We have an office where Live View is very important. We use it to buzz in people into the shop. Our shop houses very expensive items so security is a concern. I've seen video comparisons showing the latency in IP cameras vs. HD-SDI cameras. In our particular situations, would you guys recommend an HD-SDI install vs IP cameras? If so, is there a recommended brand\model of camera? I'm looking to spend about $5K for an 8 camera system. Thx
  8. Hi everyone! We need to design a CCTV system for our jewelry shop. Last time I checked into CCTV systems, digital equipment was just starting to get popular a little bit. I was wondering what type of equipment you would recommend for our shop. We're going to need about 6-8 cameras, a DVR. Specific camera and DVR recommendations would be really appreciated. Thanks v much

System Recommendations for a Jewelry Company

Ikie, The space is only about 1050 square feet. I'm not imagining the need for 5mp cameras because the cameras will be pretty close in to the subjects. A 2mp camera would probably even be fine but the techno geek in me wants to get 3mp. I've gotten in contact with an Avigilon local dealer and the cost is much higher than my $7K budget. I'm still not seeing any specific advantages for me and for my uses for the system by going with Avigilon. I'm just going to buy the camera system that I've figured would be best and have it installed by a local CCTV guy. I think this forum is doesn't really provide too much information because most of the posters here are installers and people in the trade that direct business to one manufacturer or installers vs. another. As an end consumer I want to know why using *** brand benefits me? I remember one posting clearly in my mind of a common poster here complaining about *** brand because installers can't make money on it. As an end user, I want to make the best choice for myself and whether an installer makes money is not really my problem.

What I do find very interesting with other cameras is NAS storage which ACTI cameras do not seem to have. Not having a computer to store the information would be a great help. I watched a youtube video though that showed the downsides of doing this and I don't know how accurate the information was. What happens when the NAS is full? Do the cameras know to delete the old files and make space? Can you then watch the videos through a program on an iPhone or iPad?

Thx for the reply Joseph. I didn't understand 100% what you said but I think you're recommending just talking with a CCTV expert instead of saying "I want *** brand cameras" etc. The issue is that there are no specialized jewelry store CCTV installers in Southern California that I know of. I would rather buy the equipment that I think is suitable and have it installed. I know what is suitable for my business and what is and isn't needed. I've paid a lot of money in the past to CCTV installers and have gotten sub-par equipment. I'm not saying this is the case with everybody but what my experience has been.

I don't know where to download the demo but I watched a couple of the videos of ACC in action. It looks like a nice piece of software but IMO it's overkill for our project. We hardly ever play back recorded video.

I'm not sure what Avigilon would get me above and beyond an ACTI camera. I think the video quality is very good on ACTI. I'm pretty positive that they cost less than Avigilon as well.

System Recommendations for a Jewelry Company

Hi, I can spend a max of $7k. I'm currently very seriously considering 8x ACTI E53 cameras. I've yet to decide on an NVR or computer system yet.
  15. A limitation that I haven't been able to figure out is how to output the video signal from the NVR to another 3 or 4 LCD monitors that would be in different rooms in an office. We would like to get the LiveView feed on 4 other monitors (besides the NVR) so that other personnel can buzz somebody in from the front door. Is there a way of doing this? Maybe an HDMI splitter placed somewhere? I haven't seen NVRs or a computer that has an HDMI out though.
  16. Thx for the reply aibudo. I'm aware of HDMI splitters but IP cameras use CAT6. Where would I output the video signal from? Where would the HDMI splitter be located and connected to what? Ahh, I think you mean adding a splitter in between the NVR and the monitors. Would that work? I could then output the same HDMI signal to many monitors.
  17. We'll put a camera in the man trap area as well. Any equipment recommendations ?
  18. Let's say you buzzed somebody in but within that 1 or 2 seconds, the person keeps the door open for multiple other people to come in to the office. That would be a security issue. There are 2 doors that they need to go through. You buzz in the first door and they're in a trap room. If you buzz them in and they keep the door open and you don't see it and buzz in the second room, you potentially could have people you don't want in the office.
  19. The system will be for a jewelry shop. Shop will on the upper levels of an office building. There is no existing CCTV system so this will have to be put in from scratch. While live view is important. It's also important to be able to record the happenings of the office in case it's later needed for evidence. The ceiling is made up of normal office tiles.
  20. Wow, ok. The latency there seemed to be a lot. So if it's not that bad, I definitely can do an IP system. 500ms latency is nothing. Would you guys have recommendations for me as to specific products then?
  21. It's just that I've seen some YouTube videos that compare the two technologies. Here's on: The latency I saw there wouldn't be acceptable for me.
  22. Well 500ms wouldn't be that much of a big deal. If it gets into like 2 seconds it could be a big deal for security reasons.
  23. So, I guess HD-SDI is the ideal solution for this particular use. I would love to know about some specific model of cameras and other equipment that I could look at.
  24. Hi, 5K budget was for labor ideally but if need be, I can move the budget up slightly. I'd love recommendations for specific equipment. We don't have someone literally in front of the screen every minute but when somebody buzzes the door, it would not be alright to have lag as they enter and we open the second door. This could potentially be a security issue where one person leaves the door open for others to come in after him and from the 1 sec. delay it would not be ok.
