I am confused. What you're talking about is harddisk failure or software failure. You've tried many harddisks, all seems going failed. Can you harddisk be used again when migrated to other systems, e.g. Windows. If yes, seems not hardware issue. Does your DVR software corrupt your harddisk file system? Moreover, I used Linux for years, harddisk from my impression very reliable and seldom crashed. But if you're using all old harddisks, it's un-reliable. rgds, dove

Yeah, as from another friend's post here, I know Swann DVR is just OEM of AVTECH. So you can use Video Server E, means your DVR should have internet connection, will you be confused on the capability of your DVR? Unless your DVR is other non-network based model of AVTECH. rgds, dove

Heard from avtech supplier that handphone can be supported but never tried because no expensive handphone and need to subscribe service.. would you mind telling me your test result eventually? and avtech 760 itself has been with network, how comes you want to use it via a PC, just want to save the cost of a router? rgds, dove

Extended Keyboard/Monitor & Outlook Express question
chanyickwai replied to rory's topic in Computers/Networking
I have idea on #2, you may open a free email account at Yahoo!, GMail, or so... set mail forwarding (leave the copy in the original server) from original email address to it, so you have two copies, right? Then two computers download emails using POP from two different accounts... Hope this help. rgds, dove -
Jon, has your Swann DVR got internet access, can you post us a screen dump for the opening page? just curious it's a kind of OEM products. On the other hand, what Video Server E shortage do you come across? can you share? rgds, dove

URGENT HELP !!! Need to know how to factory reset a DVR!
chanyickwai replied to frogman's topic in Digital Video Recorders
AVTECH engineer in HQ told me prevously that it requires to short between two specific jumpers on the board to reset to factory settings, therefore, most of the time, it requires to return to factory for reset. I wanted to do this also because the customer forgot the net login password. what a pity! Or you can ask if your reseller knows this. regards, dove I don't remember if it was a AVTECH unit, but one of them I had to short to specific jumpers to do it. The tech just e-mailed me the jpeg and I was able to do it. All you need is a paperclick . Eventually, I came across this provided by another board member. Seems helpful. http://scorpiontheater.com/cpcamtechsupport.aspx Rgds, dove -

Thank you for your warmest welcome. Hope learn more from all of you as my mentors. Scorpion, you seems familiar with our chinese custom. Yeah, just got our Chinese New Year that is not exactly aligned with your western calendar. We do celebrate very seriously about it. One thing probably beyond your understanding is that, as I'm in Hong Kong, Hong Kong is somewhat different from China, due to our history being colony of UK, we're more western. Native China got two weeks holiday, we only 3 days. On the other other, hongkonger also celebrate X'mas and Easter, mainland chinese no. rgds, dove

Recommended 8 Ch DVR for Retail store

securitysys, you said it. I'm with you. There is not wise to waste too much time for too little benefit, while the time actually can be used somewhere else. -
From my experience, this not related to technologies but the bandwidth offered by provider actually. Both dsl and cable can run very fast with similar budget. Pay particular attention to the difference of downstream and upstream speed. One more consideration is whether your provider will block any port so making your configuration of video difficult. At our small city, there are over 10 providers offering both services. rgds, dove

I dont need to record, what are the options
chanyickwai replied to acableconnection's topic in System Design
Well, ip camera is the most straight forward choice for you. You have one more option is using video server that stream analog camera to internet. As you're using 4 camera, using video server may give you an edge as you can collect all analog cam to a 4-splitter and then video server, who setup must be of lowest cost to you. Or you need 4 ip camera each definitely cost much more than an analog one. Welcome to PM me if you want more information. Rgds, dove -

protecting DVR from theft
chanyickwai replied to dubwiser's topic in Installation Help and Accessories
Yeah, standard said, normal USB cable can run over 5m only. I used a kind of USB with amplifier circuit previously, each one 5 metres, and can extended by cascading. I used this solution for surveillance monitor. However, the cable requires driver, it works because I'm running the server on windows. I really confused if the same cable can be used with DVR appliance, as we can't load software driver to it. Like to hear your idea. Rgds, Dove -
Top 10 Open IP Video Management Software
chanyickwai replied to securityme's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
for the open IP s/w, it's all capturing MJPEG streams. some prgrams allow control of the IP camera functions. I don't think the camera chipsets come into play however..wrt the recording sw. That confusing me. For example, I find Axis offering MJPEG and MPEG-4 picture, Vivotek offers MPEG-4, etc ... for recording purpose and monitoring only, it seems reasonable to capture only the video stream based on certain industrial format. However, the controlling, e.g. set the frame rate, set password, etc... I do believe they're more platform dependent. Moreover, a software with only viewing function without controlling function seems in-completed. The consideration for me is that while there are software compatible with so many ip cameras from multiple makers, are they actually using similar structure, e.g. chipset? Just it. Just my personal point of view. -

Top 10 Open IP Video Management Software
chanyickwai replied to securityme's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
When talking about video surveillance software, it comes to my mind the compatibility with the chipset, is there a single or just a few major chipset makers from which major ip camera makers liked Axis, Vivotek, etc. actually rely on? Tks, Dove -
