  1. I install DVRs now. Are IP cameras better? why? It seems to me like the network aspect is more difficult.

What is the highest CCTV camera resolution?

Samsung is the only reputable manufacturer that actually has TVL higher than 550TVL. But ..... I believe what phoenixad is saying that Sony cannot reach this threshold. This is what everyone for the most part sells. Sony has a MAX of 540 with there HQ1. They have an upcoming new CCD with more capability but thats not the point. The point is 600TVL ( color ) from sony is a no,no. I checked ARM and DeluxeCCTV and most, if not all, of the cameras are Sony CCD. You can tweak DSP but only so much and Sony does not come in over 540TVL for those Bullets, Domes or Full Size cameras that are displayed on those sites.

What is the highest CCTV camera resolution?

You may not like what Phoenixad is saying but he is actually correct. There is a limitation and threshold to the TV lines. You might be pissed and not like it but its true. Its actually sad when people actually get pissed and annoyed by a true statement and look for websites to back there claims. Look at Sony engineering and specs and there capabilities. How can you surpass TVL that a manufacturer cannot achieve? The same way I am communicating with you now. By writing whatever you want on the specs. Paper holds whatever you ask it to.

    Input for camera selection needed

You can try a basic CMOS megapixel camera. All CMOS cameras are WDR by default which will help with this lighting condition. I have to say that this image looks extremely bad for any type of camera. Looks to me like a low end CCD with very bad gain control and white balance. Thats what I love about IP cameras.. they never give you the specs of the camera they use inside.. only the specs and resolution of the webserver output.

    difference between NVR and DVR

just to add to the original question: NVR are usually PC based systems using windows OS

    difference between NVR and DVR

how did you boys get so far of topic? Anyways, I like your new topic on embedded DVRs.. You are on to something there Dave, but you are over complicating things a bit. The simple definition for a "true" embedded "standalone" DVR is inside the unit. If you see a PC motherboard with a CPU, removable memory, and all the other individual components of a traditional PC, it not a standalone unit. Its a PC based DVR. (please notice I am saying PC, not Windows) If the unit has one main board with embedded components and no "complete" operating system, it is a Standalone DVR. Although I agree with your definitions for the most part. This is a simple way to classify without all the extra thinking.
  7. I have been talking to reps at security tradeshows lately. The software and hardware guys don't really know have a definite answer for this. Are all IP camera megapixel?

    IR filter cut problem

What technology for switching CDS or video based? I have seen something like this with cheap CDS based mechanical filters. Like you said, the filter switches off at night, then the reflection of the IR light hits the sensor and switches the filter back on. It will continue to do this all night... you mentioned Taiwan, I bet that those cameras are Chinese Mate!

    eclipse dome

I think that all of these companies are the same. They all have crappy stuff for the customer that wants "price only".. then there is quality for the ones that will pay. Eclipse seems to have a pretty big line. Rory said is best, depends on the model. Funny that GE and wizkid are actually OEMs too.. but not in this forum. very few "real" manufacturers at there guys.
  10. What is the difference? Do I get better resolution on one versus the other? Is one really digital and the other analog?
  11. With NVRs it is very easy to add a more powerful processor, more memory, and/or more harddrives. You are correct. But adding a 16ch DVR will run you the same in most cases to adding 4 more IP cameras. What happens if you have a 16 channel DVR that is full and you want to add one more camera? This is something that is very easy and much cheaper with a NVR. The money you spent on the IP cameras would be enough to cover an extra DVR for more cameras. Everybody talks about bandwith issues but if you design your network properly and use managed switches you will not have issues. See thats the key. Design your network. Why should you have to spend all that extra money on your network when a DVR can handle the same capability with this need. You would rather revamp and add to exsisting network to accomplish what really? Seriously think about it. Im not arguing. I would like to see the reasoning
  12. to answer some of your questions: hmm dont u compare number of pixels on CCD ? yes but what are you comparing a sony ccd with a megapixel ccd? if you take standard Ip camera ( non megapixel ) they have the same ccd as an analog camera. Ask your buddy Rory. He is very honest. [/b]
  13. What are you people smoking? Analog and digital. How are you going to tell me that an Axis cameras is digital and that a standard ccd camera is analog. WOW. Really? Open an Axis camera and please tell me what you see? I bet my ass you see a standard CCD from sony, like the sony ssllx or maybe a sony HQ1 ( analog ) camera just like any other camera in the world. What makes the Axis camera digital? That fact that you are converting it at the camera and not the DVR? People talk about things without any knowledge or sense. Its amazing. When a so called " analog " camera goes into the dvr it also becomes digital and is streamed digital. Same as an IP camera. Whats the diffrence? Where its being done? As far as the AXIS being a better picture quality. Please. If you believe that i have some ocean front property for you in Vegas i would like you to buy. Hello, Mcfly, its the same ccd as that found in Pelco, Samsung, Panasonic and even Cop cameras. The picture is the same. You tell me. If you compress all your cameras at the dvr and have one video stream for all 16 cameras is this not better than having 16 diffrent streams from 16 diffrent IP cameras? Of course you will say no. Your recoding platform is also on a PC based system with 4 gigs of windows OS to help you run a DVR program thats ment to run as an add on to an OS unlike an RTOS stand alone with full processing and dedicated OS for the DVR only. But of course the PC is better right? An if you compare a megapixel camera to standard HQ1 540 lines of course the megapixel camera is going to look better. BUT, try sending 16 cameras at even 1 megapixel over a network at 30fps and see what happens. I know what your answer will be. Just drop the frame rate and res on the cameras right? Well then whats the point of having megapixel if you cant transmit at megapixel and store at megapixel? Try storing a megapixel picture at full frames in an NVR and let me know how many terrabytes you will need for couple of days of recording. I give IP cameras credit for one thing and one thing only. They have been able to sucker everyone with there terminology and marketing. Everyone says they have digital cameras as opposed to analog and the truth is they believe it. For this i give them credit. But i would really study things prior to speaking about them and look at things from a practical point of view and not a closed one.
  14. I tested this unit the other day. Pretty nice. 4 channel, Mpeg 4, remote and it has a webserver fuction to. Best ive seen so far. Just wondering if theres something negative its been perfect so far. Price is down right nasty to. I dont know how they do it?
  15. they seem to do something right. I only have good things to say. There monthly specials are crazy. Every time I get there specials I end up buying a couple grand of stuff. There techs are cool to always helping with questions. God knows i always have questions. I dont know how I even install these things sometimes ......
  16. there prices are close enough so you dont have to go there. I think the 16 channels are slated for may or june im not sure.
  17. They have good prices. I dont know how they do it sometimes.
  18. Rory? Roooooooryyyyy? Doesnt ring a bell, but you never know
  19. the ip field can hold an ip address or ip forwarding address like no-ip.com so all you have to do is enter your forwarding address in ip section. Its actually very easy. I know the unit doesnt discover the ip change for you but ive always have forwaded my customers this way with most of my units and its flawless.
