Enterprise Level Digital Video Recording
AVCONSULTING replied to rory's topic in General Digital Discussion
Rory, post some pricing in the dealer section when you get that big DVR pricing. I'm curious as to how much it is. I used to represent PI Vision which is a big enterprise class DVR and those ran into the hundred thousand and up category. I got out of that side of the business since it took months to even get specified and even then you had not sure thing. -
What standalone DVR's are you all using?

I looked over the specifications and the one thing I don't like is the inability to plug in a CD/RW for backup. I'm not a big fan of flash memory backup and prefer to have a direct USB connection to put on a CD/RW or DVD/RW. According to the specifications there is no ability to handle this. That has been a shortcoming of a lot of lower cost embedded DVRs. -
Need Help on finding some stuff

For a higher end mobile system check out this company. They are a publicly traded company that has been getting a lot of play recently because of the railroad and bus scares. I think their equipment would pass any test. http://www.digrec.com/digrec_new/digrec_home.htm -

Just finished reading an interesting article this morning about mobile DVR installations in police vehicles. Here is a link and it has information on the manufacturer of the equipment. http://biz.yahoo.com/bw/040607/75796_1.html -
Do the cameras have the ability to turn off the automatic light control? It could be that or if the cameras have automatic white balance. Somehow the camera is reacting to a shifting light frequency and trying to compensate automatically. If you have any switches that can be turned to manual I would give that a try. You may have to resort to domes that use auto-iris lenses instead of electronic iris light adjustment.

Top seller in the U.S. is DM, probably Kalatel second. After that it's a jumble. Nuvico/Vitek seems to be gaining in popularity. Samsung is also a big seller. I wish there were a perfect embedded system, but just like the PC based controversy there is no clear winner once you get past DM and Kalatel. -
The lens you have is wide angle. The quality would be the same as a varifocal but you have no leeway in setting the area to be covered. If there is no wire coming out of your lens then it is a manual iris lens and it sounds like this is what you have. The camera and lens should work just fine. The only switch that will make a big difference is the ESC which toggles between manual iris or auto iris. You would want the ESC switch to be on. The others probably won't make much difference in the video quality but it doesn't hurt to try them out by switching them on and off to see if the picture quality improves.

I haven't used this one, just downloaded and looked over the manual and it has a lot of nice features. I'd be interested in what you think of the quality of the picture and ease of use. It looks so familiar, I'm sure I've seen another brand use this software but can't pinpoint it. Have you seen it under another name?
-
They should work fine as long as they have composite video out which is usually a BNC connection.

I'm very familiar with Louroe. I know Lou, the owner personally, and have carried his products since he started the company. They are top quality. Still for multi microphone situations where multiple microphones will be used at the same time you cannot use 1 channel of audio. How do you separate out 4 or 5 simultaneous conversations all mixed into one channel? It would be like being in a room and you are at one end and 5 people are at the other end all yelling at you. It would become a jumbled sound mix which you couldn't use. Multiple channels of audio are becoming more in demand and you will start to see them on the better DVRS. Kalatel sooner or later will have to recognize this and incorporate in their new models.
-
They need to link the video with audio so have to use one mic per video channel. Also several mic's may be going at same time and a mic mixer would produce a gibberish sound if all the mic's were active at same time.

I was over at a customers yesterday who builds several types of DVRs depending on the installation. He used DigiFlower a lot but he also started to use VPON. I'll post a link below. He raves about them. I saw the unit in operation and it looks pretty good. He says that it is going to be the unit he uses most of in the future. He does large chains such as Ralphs, Winchells Donuts, Carl's Jr., etc. He does a lot of research into different PC based DVRs for his projects and right now DigiFlower and VPON are his top two. For embedded he likes the Nuvico/Vitek. http://www.aegismicro.com/home/home.htm -
Interestingly enough I've had a couple of customers want 16 camera audio for different reasons. One wanted it for training swat teams. They put up a fake house, like in movie studios, put cameras and microphones in each room and then they storm the house as if in a raid. Then they review it on the DVR using the audio and video and burn to a CD clips if needed. Another customer wanted it for police interview rooms where they need to record audio and video in police investigations. Another in a University where they use it in the pyschology department for similar interviews. This company Silicor out here sells many of their DVRs primarily because of the 16 channel audio capability. It is fairly expensive but very good audio sound and sync.

Anyone heard of Video-Insight
AVCONSULTING replied to ealfon02's topic in DVR Cards and Software - PC Based Systems
For $350 on a 16 camera 60 fps it isn't a bad deal. You wouldn't expect the top quality but maybe it isn't needed. It looks like it has enough features to handle most applications. You figure with a computer it will run around $1100 which isn't too bad. -

One of the best and most enduring PC based systems is the IDIS. You can find it under about 3 or 4 brands. I found it under the Eastman Telebell name and will post a link. I think it is also under Honeywell, Samsung, Capture, and maybe ATV. They have really done a great job with the system but it isn't inexpensive. They don't sell the boards so you have to buy a complete system. http://www.eastmansecurity.com/ Here is the site for Idis in Korea http://www.idis.co.kr/# -
The Nuvico's aren't sold without harddrive. Spytown, the link above, has the pricing published. I did a quick Google search on Nuvico DVR and found a couple of sites with published pricing. Vitek pricing is pretty much the same since they are identical units. What area are you in? There is a large Nuvico/Vitek distributor in Los Angeles that has pretty good pricing.
-
Has anyone tried the Nuvico DVR or had any feedback on the unit? I have heard that it is becoming a very popular alternative to the DM and Kalatel. After hearing Rory's experience with the Pro Video DVR I'm a little skeptical about some of the low cost embedded systems out there.
-
This is a new camera from Vitek, I haven't seen the actual unit yet but it looks interesting. Here is a link to it. I think Kalatel has some nice ones also and I'm sure Rory can give you some insight on those. One nice thing about them is that they are 24vac which installers seem to like better than 12vdc. At least less worries about polarity screwups. http://www.vitekcctv.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductID=182

At very bottom of page there is a link to a demo for the remote browser. You don't get all the functions but it gives you a good idea of quality of remote, frame rate, etc. The Nuvico and the Vitek are identical units. http://www.spytown.com/nunv4divire.html
-
Guess Nuvico's are gaining in popularity. Looks like Vitek just took them on also under their label. http://www.vitekcctv.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductID=181

Have you used the Nuvico's dynamic IP support with DSL? I've been told they work fine with cable but have problems with some of the DSL providers. Wonder what experiences you've had in that regard. Have they been pretty reliable in the field and have the end users been happy with the Nuvico's? I understand that you can't get live audio over the internet, playback only, is that true? Any chance of a POS with it or is that only going to be in the new XG series?

BDS DVR Boards
AVCONSULTING replied to rhodesep's topic in DVR Cards and Software - PC Based Systems
I'm pretty sure those are DigiFlower boards, they do have a new 32 channel system out. It is actually a very good system, nice GUI, good features. Popular in the SoCal area and one of the few 32 channel systems around, although as Paprotec said in another post you lose frame rates at the highest resolution. -
From the looks of the boards offered they seem to be DigiFlower and at this point in time I don't think DigiFlower has POS or DNS support. I think you might have to go with Geovision since they do have all the features you are asking for. Geovision however requires an external box for the POS function so you'll need to make sure they have a compatible unit for the register system you are using.

8 CH 240FPS 120GIG CDRW NET -- $3000
AVCONSULTING replied to karnisar's topic in DVR Cards and Software - PC Based Systems
There is no need for a 240 fps system in the application you are using. You will have plenty of fps available in the 120 fps. In fact no one outside of a casino or possible govt application would record at 30 fps per camera. You would use up your hard drive in a day. Most likely you will set your fps per camera at around 5. Don't waste your money on the 240 fps machine. You don't get any better picture quality and the software will be the same.
