We're working on a parking lot and park / recreation are for cctv. We're anticipating attaching cameras to light poles but drawing power from a centrally located power supply, not the light pole. Many of the runs would reach 400ft. Will we have a problem using RG59/2 conductor at that distance? Is running the camera cable inside a light pole with power a problem or is there a solution to that? Would it be worthwhile to add Cat6 to the cable for future IP connectivity? I believe I will be using HD-TVI cameras. We're requesting schedule 40 buried conduit to selected light poles. Is it normal to daisy chain conduits with a pull box/hand hole at certain locations? What about surge / lightning arrestors. I almost never use them on outside cameras but I suppose protecting the DVR / power supply is important. Is metal pole to metal camera a problem in terms of camera operation? In the past a metal camera attached to a steel building required I put a piece of wood in between.

I have two storage shed projects in a city environment. There is only AC power in the shed. No network, no wifi, no line of sight. Customer stores bikes, tools and equipment in the shed. We plan to put a IP dome camera with 128gb sd card in camera for recording of motion events. I suppose if the camera is stolen, we're screwed. Just curious if there is a better way to accomplish this.

it's a 30A unit, well over what the panel produces.

I am using CMIP7442W-28M with the micro sd memory card as a standalone camera to record. LTS says it can accept a 128GB micro SD card. So I buy SANDISK 128GB micro SDXC card, basically top of the line card. The camera will not recognize the card. I put in a similar 64gb card and it shows it as 119gb and works. 64gb would be fine but 128gb is much more comforting to know we have that much more storage. I cannot update the firmware either. This is the second time I've tried this. Does anyone else have some ideas how to fix this?

Just an update I did one location using a solar panel. I bought a windy nation charge controller unit, a 50 watt solar panel and a 100AH deep cycle battery. I figure the battery would run 1 IP camera 12v, 1a for about 4 days. There is plenty of sun available here. I used 18/2 wire to power the camera and run power from the panel to the windy nation unit. So far it works well!

Cat5e baluns, 4 camera, horizontal lines
jimmyNJ posted a topic in Installation Help and Accessories
I am using Cat5e with baluns. Each cable run is fairly short, 25 - 100ft, 4 cameras, all dome, 12vdc. I am using a single 4 output power supply, 12vdc, 5amp. During the day 1 cameras shows horizontal lines, sporadically. This was the last camera added to the system. The first 3 worked fine. At night with the lights out, 2 other cameras show horizontal lines. I figure it is the IR working hard to maintain the picture. Would it be smart to swap out the power supply with 4 individual power supplies? Or is it my cheap baluns? The whole system is on a small UPS. -
My bosch dvr supports rtsp stream. I can get an rtsp stream to work for my android phone but haven't found anything that will work with a PC. (I can't get VLC player or Windows Media player to work, nor Quicktime or real player). I have a bosch 480 series (meh) but it works fine. The web interface works but it drags down my old pc so I am hoping there is a small program to stream rtsp.

One location will have power, the second will not have power close by. There will be power available on an adjacent property that we've been given permission. However the camera will be about 70 feet from the garage door of the shed and about 15" high. I've explained to the customer the best spot is next to the shed, there are utility poles there but Im sure they are off limits for mounting a camera. So we're left with a 70 foot distance. We still want to go with an IP camera and sd card but we're reconsidering the camera we've chosen which is a 4.1Mp IP dome ip camera. Our supplier is suggesting a 4.1mp ip camera with varifocal lens (bullet) and the sd card. We want to see who is entering and exiting the shed and what they're carrying (weedwacker, leaf blower, tools, equipment). Any specific camera recommendations? I am also thinking of attaching a wireless bridge to the camera so that we can drive up to the camera location and wirelessly retrieve the videos from the camera. There is no internet available here. Does that sound like a good idea?

good stuff, thanks.

Cat5e baluns, 4 camera, horizontal lines
jimmyNJ replied to jimmyNJ's topic in Installation Help and Accessories
I've always used Rg59 siamese. this is my first time with baluns. Another installer led me down this path so the customer is ready if they later upgrade to IP cameras. i hate to re-run cable but it appears that may be required. Will be going back to test soon. -

Cat5e baluns, 4 camera, horizontal lines
jimmyNJ replied to jimmyNJ's topic in Installation Help and Accessories
I am running power and video on a single Cat5e cable. Male Rj45 plugs into a balun on each end. during the day, 3 out of 4 cameras are clear, at night with lights out 3 out of 4 cameras have lines. -
To be clear, the image is very good and then changes to white for a short time and then back to good. I've changed the camera. I'm not sure if it is the wire run. Perhaps a short somewhere. WHen I test here in the office making a short, I get black (not a white screen).

I've installed a bullet camera on a metal building. Worked fine for a few years. Cable is RG59 siamese with 12VDC power. Now this camera will display all white on the monitor and then back to normal. I've replaced the camera and power supply. I brought the camera back to the office and installed on a test monitor for 3 days with no issue. Other cameras on this system are fine, also attached to metal building. Could it be an issue with the wire run? about 120' long in a high ceiling. Would a cable fault make the screen go white? This a truck repair shop.

I've pre-run rg59 siamese to 6 locations and drilled through wood. now the outside wall is covered in stucco, about 1/2 thick and the inside walls are sealed. I was planning to go with bullet cameras but have no space to stow the connectors with the small hole in the wall. Is is acceptable to mount a weatherproof single gang electrical box with a cover to stow the connectors and then just attach my cameras to the cover? is there a better way?

all good ideas I suppose! I did not make the hole big enough, and if I drill a bigger hole i risk damaging the cable. i guess i am going to go with the electrical box.

new camera install on stone wall
jimmyNJ replied to jimmyNJ's topic in Installation Help and Accessories
Well I talked with my distributor and decided to go with the Nuvico CABJ which is an alumnium back box and then I will install CVWMI wall mount bracket and dome camera The rest of the building is hard stucco, I drilled through the wood ahead of time and pushed through my RG59/2. I planned to use bullet cameras here and I want to hide the power/video connector back inside the hole. What would do, make a bigger hole now or wait until the stucco is up and cut a larger hole? I planned to use a bullet camera by CCTVStar SB-420. No eaves here at all. Is this camera a good idea? -
i'm donig a new install where there will be two cameras. they plan to install a stone veneer to the wood, probably with a wire mesh behind the stone with mortar. i'd like a neat install without having to damage the new stone wall. i recall there were cameras by speco that came with a weatherproof electrical box (that I could install now) and a fitting on the front of the box that fit the camera in perfectly. I have a feeling they've been discontinued. what would you recommend when you have a stone wall to work with.

new camera install on stone wall
jimmyNJ replied to jimmyNJ's topic in Installation Help and Accessories
I dont' know the surface, but I have a feeling it is that flat stone that is very thin and un-even. the surface would be un-even. I planned on using a bullet camera. i remember those speco cameras that fit right on a weatherproof box. will a wall mounted dome work well to cover an entrance on an angle? -
IP video with sound for classroom
jimmyNJ posted a topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
I have an application for small classrooms to record student-teacher interaction and archive them for parent-teacher conferences. We're looking at an IP camera system but we also need to record sound. I'm told the microphone in an axis camera or acti won't pick up all of the sound. What would be a a good solution with an external mic fed into the camera mic jack? If I have to go with active microphones, how would you power them? locally or via a central amp. Has anyone had a similar application for sound+video? What did you do? I am looking 15 cams. Each room is fairly small but I want to be sure that we can provide quality sound with the video. -
I've just my first DVR install. It's a small AVTECH DVQ2, 4 channel DVR. I have a couple questions perhaps someone can address: the cameras seem to record every shadow /sunlight that moves across the camera view. I haven't figured out the fine tuning of the DVR. There are settings for LS (level of sensitivity), SS and TS. I've been adjusting LS from 2 up to 15. What can be done? Also we placed the DVR in an equipment closet, inside an office. The issue the customer said is that if someone knew they could just steal it along with the recordings of whatever they did. What is the best way to secure the DVR, a lock box? What do you ordinarily do? Also, is it possible with this unit to schedule regular backups to a network hdd space. I see there is a backup option but regularly scheduled backups would be neat. Thanks for your help. I'm learning.
