Hi I have been looking at a 5MP DVR for an analog system with six 5MP cameras. However, many of the DVR that are sold as 5MP seem to record at "5MP - Lite" or "5M-N". What is the difference between these two and does anyone have a recommendation for a 5MP DVR? Thanks

Thanks - that is exactly what I thought when I saw the system. Will probably install myself. Can you recommend cameras and POE IP recording unit?

Attached is a pic of the power supply without the cover - it does actually look like the cable to the power supply is cat5 not BNC. I have also attached a pick of the back of the VSM

The COAX is going into the power supply in the bottom left of the picture I uploaded above. Attached is a picture of how the CAT 5 is wired into the cameras

Yes at the camera end it is just the CAT 5. Two COAX cables for each camera disappear under the floorboards and must be joined to a single cat5 for each camera. The COAX are not joined together and one comes form the power supply and the other from the video switch.

Thanks. Its home use. The COAX does not run as far at the cameras and is joined the CAT5 under the floor boards (both COAX cables for each camera must be joined to a single cat 5 cable for that camera). The cameras are then connected to the CAT5 which carries both the power and the video signal.

A pic of the cables going into the VMS and one of them going into the power supply.

Thanks. Based in South East London. The key piece I don't understand is which cameras will connect to the CAT 5 cable but supply an analog signal.

There are 6 cameras. I don't know how the CAT 5 is connected to the COAX as that bit is under the floorboards. However, power is supplied to the cameras over the CAT5. There are two COAX cables for every camera - one carrying the video signal and connected to the video switch, the other connected to a power supply. No idea what a reasonable budget is to replace the cameras and add a modern DVR.

It looks pretty old! No recorder connected at the moment - just an old black and white monitor. I think the system dates from the 90s but it might be older... Keen to add a recorder.

I have an old analog system that was in place when I bought the house. There is a switch labelled 'video switch VSM-28A' and an analog monitor. The wiring is BNC but has been extended with CAT 5 to reach the cameras. Does anyone have any recommendations for cameras I can buy to connect to the CAT 5 cable but which will provide an analog signal and the best DVR I could replace the switch with? Not keen to replace the wiring as this would mean lifting floorboards etc.
