    Don't try this onsite!

Im going to agree with the headache part there.....
  3. I'd rather dry shave with a dull steak knife then call a tech support hotline for places like Dell, HP, SBC, etc. First of all they are reading from a script and very few are "experts". Asking me questions like "Do you have the PC turned On?" I can do without. scottj

  7. hi thinking of upgrade to gv-1240-16 and i look at all info / pdf and do not see if it can record audio on all 16 chanels and if at 720x480 resolution or is it crippeld like gv800 audio only 4ch at max 640x240 not at 640x480 resolution and bidirectional sound on 1 ch from a pc dusan It does have all 16 channels of audio recording capability. You can record audio at 320x240, 640x240, 640x480 De-Interlace, 720x240 (NTSC only), and 720x480 De-Interlace (NTSC only), 720x288 (PAL), and 720x576 De-Interlace (PAL). scottj
  8. not sure on this one, but look at the wasted space that GUI uses on the search and main screens..hilarious I thought the purpose of the DVR was to view VIDEO, not some persons final exam for Adobe Photoshop. If I wanted artwork, Id buy a Picasso. scottj

    DF-4900 DVR Card

You want the real Digi-Flower pricing, or the Chinese pricing? The difference is significant. scottj
  10. One guy to atlk to in here is DataAve. He does a plethora of these type projects and can probably tell you in summary what you need to know. The most important factor with a project of this nature is $$$$$. The more of that you can get, the better it will work. scottj
  11. Already done, all of the above. Cost is the driver.

    American Dynamics Equipment

I like the Sensormatic Ultra Day/Night Domes, other than that it is too pricey for what you get. scottj

    Geovision 7.2

Latest news from Geo is that version 7.1 will be released late August, early September. It will include the new GUI design as well as support for additional features. scottj

    Installation Prices

Your selling price is dictated by market demand, service support, your competition, and most importantly what it is worth to you.. Then again, do not use Ebay to compare your pricing to, as you will be out of business shortly there after, unless you move some serious volume. Typical installation companies near my midwest location ask for a 30% profit margin on equipment, then determine labor rates based on difficulty of work, etc. I have seen people who will bid installs at a 10% margin before, we consider them "idiots" for lack of better terms. They are the ones that will not be able to afford to support what they sell and eventually close the doors. scottj

    Static IP necessary?

You need a static IP for Network IP cameras to work. For DVRs, well I heard that there are DVRs that will work with dynamic IP, but yet to see one to do it. Regardless, if IP address changes, then you must know about it, as that is the only way you can connect to your DVR... Levon There are many DVR's that support integrated DDNS Management. Same applies for IP Cameras (AXIS, IcanTek, etc). The manufacture generally will contract a DDNS Managment company to utilize their servers for IP updates. Some of the larger manufacturers may even supply and service their own DDNS Management servers. scottj

    Static IP necessary?

No absolutely not. If you are using Dynamic IP service provided by the ISP company (comcast for example), you can use a DDNS management service. Dynamic Domain Name Service uses a software client whether integrated into a broadband router or installed on a server to update the IP at your location to the management service domain name you specify. Most low cost broadband routers will support DDNS functions, as well as have integrated update clients in the firmware to make it easier to use with equipment such as IP cameras, etc. A common method is to go to : http://www.dyndns.org and establish an account for free and read up on how it works exactly. scottj

    rs-232/rs-485 convertor

Bob, The fact that the camera is not listed only means that preset configurations for that manufacturer specific camera are not present. However it will still work fine. Use COM 1 if it is available and follow these instruction: 1.) Under System Configuration menu select the PTZ drop down menu and left click "Pelco Dome" 2.) A new box will appear, place a check mark in the "Activate" box in the lower left corner, place a check mark in the "Pelco D Protocol" box, you will see the baud rate change from the default 9600 to 2400. Verify that COM 1 is selected. 3.) Close that window and then from the main GUI open the PTZ control panel and you can begin teaching the camera tour patterns from there. You will also be able to control the OSD (On Screen Display) portion of the camera assuming the camera supports this feature. Since I am not aware of what exact camera you have, I may be missing an addres switch setting that will need to be made on the camera PCB itself. scottj

    rs-232/rs-485 convertor

it should work fine. The GV-Net is nothing more than just an RS-485 to RS-232 converter that has power applied to it. scottj

    Networked Video Storage

Edimax makes a very good lower cost switch. These things have a fan inside them and have proven to withstand numerous power surges, etc. with no failures. I highly recommend them. The ES-5500S and ES-800S are the ones we use. http://www.edimax.com/ scottj
  25. what version of software are you using? may also want to suggest that if it 6.01 or older that you transfer the raw video data to an external drive. Supply the police with the RPB Client and let them open the files through that, versus using eZView. We have seen this before, I just do not remember exactly why or how we fixed it. scottj
