  1. when you install your connectors make sure you use the correct ones for solid wire. The RJ45 plugs can be for stranded or solid. If you put on jacks you should be ok as they are designed for solid wire. For sure go with solid copper cheap offshore copper clad alum will come back to haunt you.
  2. The dvr to the laptop will not work as the vga port on the laptop is video out. are u using vga in from the dvr to the tv. have you selected the right input using your tv remote?
  3. did you try running all the cameras off from one multi output psu also did someone check the ground on the outlet itself ? I would put a meter on the ground of the outlet and then contact the buidding frame or earth ground and see if you are getting any stray volltage

Vivotek IP8162 - jittery, choppy video

What else is running on that network? Could be a bad port on the switch or some other thing causing a problem.

Is there differences in cat5 cables?

check with a local electrical supply house they should be able to get what you need. price may be a ittle more but may be offset by shipping charges

Constructing new hotel what kind of wiring should I use?

I see there is some difference of opinion on my reccommendation of going to cat 6 I still stand on that for a couple of reasons a lot of cat 6 is 23 gauge wire and the new standards are going to address not just speed and bandwidth but current carrying ability. Eventually the goal is to have the ability to charge batteries and power larger draw equipment. So for the difference in costs I would still install cat 6 and as a company who mainly does cable installs we have not installed any cat 5e in the past two years not because we would not but because all the specks we have seen have been for cat6. If you are looking at fiber which may be a good idea be sure to speck 50 micron MM. As for the POE question I am a little confused I know you could but a poe midspan but how does POE work on a link over 328 feet. I can see how power could exceed that but what does that link that is out of length do to your network? If you have to certify the install it won't pass.

CAt 6 and like the other poster said work it out so you can get your runs to 300' or less for POE. I think cat 5 is a mistake as who knows what is going to be running on the network next year. Again check code for requirements of plenum or non plenum.

Is there differences in cat5 cables?

As long as it is underground rated or direct bury you should be ok I would use the highest grade cable you can afford as who knows what else is coming along to ride on the network. We use the gell filled stuff just because of price and avaliability. Shieled not necessay
  11. We had a camera take a direct hit a couple of months ago and it was of course ruined. However, the lightening protection prevented the surge from getting back to the nvr/dvr and the building did not catch on fire and nobody was hurt. We use ditek or whatever meets code for your particular area. I guess the point is that it is not really the camera you are trying to protect on a direct hit it is people and property. Surge protection will help protect the camera but your main concern and liability is people and property.
  12. I would use the outdoor rated because any nick can potentially let mositure in and then you get to do it all over again. I have seen regular cat five's jacket start to fade in a matter of week where it is exposed to direct sunlight.

    Camera Suggestions for Geovision system...

I don't know what level card you have but if you can run series 8 software you can use IP as well as analog cameras. With analog cameras you can uses any mfg you wish. If your system will accept IP you can use geo cameras without paying for a license. If you use other mfg you will have to pay a license fee per camera. For running the control wire for a ptz you can use a pair out of a cat5 cable. I would suggest running cat5e or 6 as if you ever do go to IP the cable is in place.

    Dahua cameras now at Costco

PI Mfg has a 4 port POE that works well anis cheap
  15. We still use a fair amount of analog and it does seem that there are more IP Mfgs and the lower grade IP cameras are cheaper than the higher priced analog sony,Bosch, pano.
  16. looks like a ground loop I think there are several posts on this topic
  17. could be that with the trend to IP they are not changing connectiions on their lines and will be concentrating on their IP lines.

    SS drives

I am thinking of building a new server and wondered if anyone has used a ss drive for the operating system and then used a couple of regulare harddrives in a raid configuration. Would I gain any relaability or am I just spending extra for the ss drives. I am also thinking of two nics for running cameras on their own switch/IP addressing scheme.

Public view monitor with IP camera

We have a potential job that will require a public view monitor that is connected to and IP Camera (probably Axis) what they want is to have the person see themselves on the PVM and then have the footage also sent to an axis NVR. I was thinking about a web enabled tv but wondered if the camera had to download any codex if it could do that to a TV. The old Sanyo cameras had hdmi out so it was not a problem. I could go analog cam to axis encoder but I would like to avoid that if possible.
  21. I am looking atgoing the push video route where a camera trip directly sends video to the cell phone via the broadband connection. the one thing I think I want to eliminate is the onsite NVR. Either have sd card or video stored offsite. I Don't know how to intergrate the cell backup though perhaps someone has a soulution primary route via the net backup via cell/lte?

    rg59 siamese rot ! Help

if you want to use coax get outddoor rated that is gel filled that will prevent the wicking that occures whenever you get any mositure in the cable the outdoor rated is also sunlight resistant which can be part of the problem

    Bridging networks

I have not posed in this section before so this may be an old topic. I have 12 cameras and a NVR on there own IP addressing scheme. Cameras are IP the customer wants to view the server but does not want the traffic from the cameras on his regular network. There is no need to view indivadual cameras over the regular network. Is my solution a second network card in the server and then bridge the connections or is there a better way doing something else?

Labor rates and pricing of projects

Train your own people if you can then you have more control.. Estiminating the labor is always the tough part of figuing jobs. IF you can hire and experienced person with the right attitude and maybe cross train him or her on the other parts of your business. Then perhaps you could keep them busy if things in the cctv end get slow.
