CAT5 breakout technique?
jeromephone replied to J-Telectro's topic in Installation Help and Accessories
Why not make home runs and use on cat 5 for each camera? If you ever want to go to IP it is in place. ALso you can use baluns for signal and another pair for power. How much are you going to save by splitting that cat 5 cable? Right around 12 cents per foot. -
No you need a IP 66 rating or higher I think 55 is indoor rated google the rating scale an it will tell you what all the numbers mean.

Do not even consider anything other than direct bury in conduit or gel filled. We use lots of general cable and some belden. One of the issues with some of the cheaper cable is how it comes out of the box. You lose in time anything you save on the cable if the box gets tangled.

I am working on a system that will use some netgear POE switches which will be housed in Lcomm plastic enclosures about 14X6X12 . I would like to put a small battery backup in the same houseing as all I will have is the switch, incoming cables and possibly a fan. the switch runs on 7.5 v and the fan would be 12. I have been looking(google) for UPS as small as 150va. The backup time i need is just around 5 min as these will be on generator power within that time. I would like something that could use a 7 amp hr battery.

very small battery backup
jeromephone replied to jeromephone's topic in Installation Help and Accessories
that looks even better. What are the specks or who is the supplier. I looked at my switch requirements and the 4 port poe is 44 watts max I found another switch that is a five port with one uplink (BV-tech 4+1 with up to 65 watts POE. Thanks for your help. -
I would try setting up a schedule with different motion sensitivity at night than during the day. Mask out as much of the view as possible.

difference between different mega pixel cams
jeromephone posted a topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
We are in the process of quoting a job which we can propose either 1.3 or 2 mega pixel cams. Given that whatever mfg we use will be the same for both can on really tell the difference unless they are side by side on the same view. I have looked at cameras from 1.3 to four and can tell the difference but I don't know if the price difference is worth it. It seems to me the big difference is between analog and 1.3. I am also assuming that the cameras would be the same except for the megapixel rating. -

I know what you are saying if one model has IR or not that type of thing Many mfgs don't supply the same camera without changing other features so you cannot get a direct comparsion. This environment will require IR and is pretty hostile. We may even have to have a constant air flow over the camreras to prevent dust buildup. On the old system that is no longer working the cameras had to be cleaned every week. I will probably end up with some type of outdoor rated camera. Still have not chosen a mfg yet. -

there may be 20+ cameras so we could be looking at a quite a price difference. -

Two parallel 500' coax home runs, or Cat5 + baluns, or ???
jeromephone replied to SpyGuy10's topic in Installation Help and Accessories
As far as future proofing using the cat 5/6 is the way to go except if you switch to IP you have to deal with the 100 meter limits that ethernet requires. -
Using regular touchtone phones in phone system.
jeromephone replied to nDAlk90's topic in Security Cameras
We sell NEC DSX systems which have 2 analog ports built in for door boxes etc. You could also use a Avaya Partner system that accepts both electronic and analog phones on all ports. -
Does anybody sell or use this company. We are currently demoing some equipment and trying to figure out if we want to sell it. I like the fact that you get very quick response to the smart phone and that the video is stored offsite the anaylatics seem pretty good at sorting out people or cars from other motion. The test cameras we tried out were IP but not mega pixel. We also have the 4 analog camera decoder that works well. Any input welcome.

Seeking wireless IP recommendation
jeromephone replied to SpyGuy10's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
ubiquiti has a wireless camera system on their website -
I know there is probably not a problem due to the low voltages involved but we have seen jobs were a UL rating is required. I guess it pretains if the cable might be offshore non tested material. given the choice I would go with UL approved.

Using one Cat-6 Cable for two Cameras!
jeromephone replied to cgcmgr's topic in Installation Help and Accessories
are you able to run another wire but just choose not too? I would think if it is possible running another cable you would save a whole lot of potential issues. If the cable is around 15 cents a foot you are only looking at 30.00 -
Seeking wireless IP recommendation
jeromephone replied to SpyGuy10's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
Have you checked with the FAA on whether or not you can install a wireless system on the airport? I don't think it would interfer with a navigation or the automatic weather reporting but I would get some guidance before I setup anything with a potential to cause problems. You may face a pile of paperwork but that may be the lesser of two evils. -

how to measure the performance of a IP camera ?
jeromephone replied to comic_nl's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
you may need to use Solar winds engineers toolkit. Or something that shows all the activity on the network. I am guessing customer thinks camera is bogging down his network?? -

maybe cat 5/6 baluns with one end and active ie powered ? -
Agreed if you are not licensed for high voltage why take the risk especially at a school. In the US anyway there is a device called a power tap which locks into the photo cell socket and then the photo cell locks into that apparently the photo cell is getting 110 all the time. http://www.solisenergy.com/documents/LPT100_DS.PDF several companies make something similiar

I think you may have another problem you should see picture over rg6 at that distance. What kind of monitor are you using. Make sure you have the correct inputs. Take a short cable and take the monitor to the camera and see if you get a picture. You want to make sure the camera is putting out a signal -
I don't have my manuals with me this morning but look on geos website to be sure but I believe the twin server is used to balance recording loads and allow for backup in case the recording server goes down. It is not necessary if you are just recording to the host machine.
