Most affordable / reliable POE switch for the money

Look at the netgear POE switches we have been using them and the pricepoint seems a little better. -
HID edge and Infinias sytems
jeromephone replied to thewireguys's topic in General Access Control Discussion
we are just finishing up a 30 door infinas system and it was simple to install. We went with a dedicated server but the specks don't call for anything special. The only thing on this install that was a little different was this being a new building and the plans allready called for power supplies at the doors we used those intead of poe. Several of the doors had crash bars so you need the additonal power anyway. Nice thing about this system if you only have a door or two you do not even need the server and central mgmt software just log into the unit via a browser. -
If this is geo you can delete indivadual cameras dates without getting rrid of the other footage.

I have a copy of 5 but don't know if it is site specific or if I can transfer it. You would be better going straight to 7 as the tech support for five is either gone or will cost quite a bit for service. I would not upgrade to a level that is already out of date.

I know I have had my issues with some Everfocus products but we have had a vandle dome with built in heater in a beer cooler for about 2 years with no problems.

Powering Cameras Over Cat 6 Cable
jeromephone replied to larrymilla's topic in Installation Help and Accessories
how much would 60 feet of 18/2 cost? seems like it would make trouble shooting easier in the future plus the concern with voltage dorp. -
I have just purchased some geo cameras and you do get the 8.4 software for free. It appears to be the same as if you purchased a card. You can run other mfgs cameras but you have to pay a license fee if you use other than Geo cameras. You would have to purchase a card if you are using analog.

are CAT5 modular connectors the same as the CAT6 connectors?
jeromephone replied to alpine0000's topic in Video Transmission/Control Devices
We run all cat 5/6 in solid and for ethernet, the length standard is the same, 100 meters including patch cords. You should run solid as most jacks are designed for solid wire. Stranded should be used for patch cords. Many people make up there own patch cords using solid wire and they seem to fail more than the stranded ones do. I think it may be the lack of flex in the connector. The plugs come in flavors for solid, stranded and universal. Be carefull to keep the stranded and solid ones seperate as they will often not work correctely if used on the wrong wire. I have found that the crimp tool should be the same brand as the plugs. I have no idea why but they just seem to work better. -
How much difference is the price for the proper wire all copper etc? I don't believe I have lost any jobs because I was a couple of cents off on the cable usually it is labor hours or cam speks. Our way of looking at is copper clad = trouble now or later cat 5 other than with baluns or poe don't use cable found in basement stolen, from construction site, left over from a 1970s antenna install, or made from old extension cords, don't us it unless you want to make return visits. One thing we are hearing about more and more is cca showing up in offshore cat5/6. This stuff not only is not all copper they are lableing it as UL approved when it is not. Consider the implications of not using UL approved products for resale.

Yeah I do that too. Used to be in the garbage business and I was taking pictures of the garbage trucks in Teton National Park. Wife was impressed

Ghosting on one of my analog channels
jeromephone replied to FarmerCharlie's topic in Installation Help and Accessories
try changing connectors and power up camera on a power supply that only has that camera on it -
I have lost jobs for many reasons but I don't think it happened too often because I used 100% copper cable made by a leading MFG. I feel it is always best to use the highest quality components possible and still get the job. The cheap cable is really costly if you have to replace it. We had a job where a piece of fiber went bad. Our supplier (Grayabar) got two factory reps out to check out things took samples back to corning and figured out the problem. I don;t think that is happening with the cheapest mfg

I only need a single IP cam. What should I do?
jeromephone replied to sequoia's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
How about getting a camera with a built in SD card then you could retrive it on your PC You would have limited storage time but it does not sound like you need more than a day or so? Sanyo and Pano both have this option -
We have used the kvm over cat 5 on several installs. It works fine and then you have control over the server. If you just extend the monitor you have to go back to the server to review or change things around. We have had some problems with the belkins they seem to die on us after a year or so.

I am going to be installing a system with several IP cameras on it and am looking into storage options. I found a case that will let me install 8 drives but I am concerened with cooling etc. I have looked at several Direct attached storage units. I have not had good luck with usb attached units but have used a couple with esata connections. I would like to be in the 6 terabite range. Does anyone have any reccommendations or any units to stay away from? I have looked at drobo and d-link.

The Tiger Woods/Michael Jordan of Bass Fishing
jeromephone replied to SEANHAWG's topic in Test Bench
He lives about 25 miles from us and his brother has a basspro shop. He is a big deal in the area and it is like a golf pro lot of people want to buy his endorsed products and want to emulate him. I think the fishing gig is probably better than the CCTV gig -
Why not install the card and let us know how it works out? Then you can tell us?

Geovision IP Cameras
jeromephone replied to jeromephone's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
Thanks for the pix I will get one of these and try it out. Looks to me that the picture quality should be OK for what we are doing the 3' limit should be no problem as these will be mounted on the 2nd story of a building -
As long as I can drive I will have at least one 4wd. We don't need it often but driving on the interstate everyday it gets engaged a lot. I seem to notice the improved stopping distance more than the ability to plow through the snow.

We were closed Wed here in MI only around 14" one day and it was over. As I have hung around a long time the 1978 and 79 storms were worse more snow and more wind for several days. The first one kind of made my other business go we had a garbage service and were the only ones running for a couple of weeks picked up several hundred customers. The mother of them all here was 1967 storm 34 inches and our little town was cut off for a couple of days.
