My 87 year old mother has fiber to the house. (She really needs it as she checks email every couple of weeks and then spends two weeks figureing out how to reply I have cable and my speeds appear to be faster than hers. I think a big factor in speed is what type of computer you have and how much memory you have installed. If you have a slow processor that can be a bottelneck. Her fiber is connected to a router which has a 10/100 connection so I would guess her max has to be 100 and she is not reaching that.

how many dvr can 1 dyndns account can support?
jeromephone replied to bomberman00's topic in Digital Video Recorders
We are using the pro version and for $15.00 why try and fool with the other? Just charge the customer 20.00 a year for remote access or have them get fixed IP from the ISP. I also like the ability to add a customer to an account without going through the hassel of setting up the free account on site. -
We have it on a couple of systems but have not done anything with them that was not avaliable on 8.3.4

I would check out PI MFg they have a whole array of active passive baluns we have used the passive and had no problems. Somebody told me about a trick they saw on the internet comparing monster speaker cables with another setup identical sound etc. Turns out the other setup was a rig made with coat hangers

caddy fasterners low voltage book all kinds of good stuff amen to beam clamps! The pics are correct as running cat 5/6 wire now requires a wider support than just the bridal ring they J hook or the yellow plastic insert fullfills the spport requirement.

Does anybody make a power strip or something that will make mounting these transformers neat and secure? -
12VDC or 24vac

can you put the switch in the garage and run one cat 5 back to server. Then use the poe or central power supply in the garage. That would give you short runs where maybe you could get by with 16/2 for power. Ditto on the seperate conduit. -
the 955 runs about 1500-1600. They also send you firmware upgrades for free. Includes software to set up your test schedule and you can have a printout for several different types of cable.

We have a JDSU 955 for certifing data networks. It is nice as it saves jobs on a sd card and it has the multiple remotes if you just want to wire map. We also have the standard wiremappers which we use to test a couple of drops here and there. They run around 80.00. I like having a record of the results if issues come up later. Multi meters are whatever we have laying around.

I probably posted this before but things change. Looking at a 4 channel NVR that I can demo various IP cams. Hopefully it will cover a lot of different mfgs and give me the ability to switch out cameras without going through the expense of buying new licenses each time. I have looked at Qnap any others? as usual price an issue. Will also look into milestone essential as I saw that discussed earlier.

What is the proper way to install a POE camera on a steel light Pole. We have a poe camera and we intend to install cat 5 lightening protection. From what I read I should insulate the camera from the steel pole for added protection. Is this how you guys do it or do you just mount directly to the pole. Our Cat 5 will run in a seperate conduit from any high voltage wires.
-
If I had to make a choice I would rather lose the camera than burn down the building.

Happens on our bird feeder about once a month. We feed the bird seed the birds feed the hawks.

Handheld screen for setting help
jeromephone replied to torbenc's topic in Installation Help and Accessories
If we are doing several cameras we put a 14 " monitor on a cart get a 10' patch cord and look at the monitor from the ladder. You can come pretty close with few trips up and down. It takes cords and power outlet but it sure is better than the call and challenge method. We have found that focus at the camera can be a little different than at the dvr on longer runs. -
I don't know about the 1 and 1/4 tape but the 1 inch can be printed on several different brother printers. When we are pulling a lot of data wire we use a panduit program called ez-mark and pre print sheets of lables these wrap around the cables and we have not had a problem with them coming off. We supply two sets to the guys running wire they then have to match up both ends if they are off they can correct right away so the patch panels and outlets match up. when we were writing on wires somebody would screw up and get a duplicate and then it was a mess. Costs big bucks to fix as several hours can be involved.

Hello! I'm having a wee bit of trouble with PTZ
jeromephone replied to Dee_Ann's topic in Video Transmission/Control Devices
You have to love this post! Loads of info the lady is trying everything and gives tons of info both in print and pics. Wish everyone had this attitude. -
We have about 5 of the ptouch brother products and we like them as you can get the industrial tape and they have programming for patch panel cables etc. Everyone has a 40.00 one on their truck and we have a couple of the high end ones. You can get a large number of different tapes an any office supply store. Personally I think that lableing is one of the most important parts of an install. Troubleshooting on a large install a couple of years down the road is a big problem if you are trying to track down wires. If the customer is going to see it a printed lable makes a better impression than something done in sharpi.

I have had three storage harddrives crash on three seperate machnes two were from one supplier and one from another. I get an improper shudown message and end up with a bad sector on the drive. All on UPS. software 8.3 to 8.4.. anyone else seen this?
-
If you are running outdoors consider/use outdoor rated cable in you undergroud conduit runs. You will get moisture in the ones underground. Also make sure to use large enough conduit if you use plastic
-
UPS are Minuteman e1000 or e750 depending on location. Bad sector correctly is not a harddrive crash but it locked up the system and I feel I should replace the drive as these units are only a couple of months old. I will get drive specks and post.

Manufacturers of Generic Cameras Onsold as Premium Brands
jeromephone replied to Fiona's topic in Security Cameras
Most of the major suppliers have certain standards that manufactures have to meet before they will carry their products. They require certain dollar volume of sales overall, tech support depts, and performance standards. When I buy through them I may pay alittle more usually not but I don't have to track down someone on the other side of the world. I call them get an RMA and my account is credited or I have an advance replacement on the way. Who you by from can be as important as what you buy. -
Merry Christmas and amen to a better 2011. Something good will come along.
