What to do when underground fiber lines fail!!
jeromephone replied to ChrisL's topic in System Design
You could get someone in with a meter to find the point of failure and repair it? It may be cheaper than switching everything out. Failure point could be at the termination. ELectronics are all right? Most of the fiber problems we run into are with the media converters going bad. -
If you are trying to add a second monitor or feed to projector check out Radio shack they have an usb powered adaptor for around 30 bucks
-
We use them alot for other stuff other than cctv paging, phones etc. Good rep is the key they can provide good pricing and delivery. We found in most cased Northern Vid was cheaper but longer ship time and shipping charges. with the merger Northern has higher pricing than ADI and still has the shipping.

I have a potential customer who wants a time lapse video of a construction site I would want to take a picture every 3-4 min during the working days. I have done this with pixelsmart frame grabberand software but wondered if anyone had any other ideas. I have cameras around so that part is not a problem.
-
I guess I should have done some more looking before I asked I just dowloaded and used software from Azcendant Software. Really nice and cheap if you look at the list of supported codex and cameras it is really impressive. It will automatically make a time lapse movie or will just save the frames.
-
Do you have a camera that you would reccommend that handles this easily? I would rather go this route that an analog camera etc. Can you schedule the uploads to eliminate nights weekends etc as this is not going to be used for security purposes.?

Geo is supposed to be coming out with a software patch that will allow the use of the immervision lens like it is shown on the immervision website. Does anyone know about this?
-
I am looking at the geovision solution for license plate recognition I talked with a vendor yesterday but wanted some other opinions. The cameras will be placed right next to a drive at 42" height and because of a gate top speed will be between 5-10 mph. Cameras cannot be placed outside of the gate because that area is not secure. that would be best as the cars and trucks would be stopped at that point. We are using geo for the dvr portion of this project.

fiber optic transceiver discussion - about future trends
jeromephone replied to aoshifiber's topic in Video Transmission/Control Devices
Are you sending the serial data for the PTZ over the fiber? or is it IP traffic? I know there is a lot of costs but can you send the video over one set of transcievers and the data over another set. that sshould not be required but just a thought. ALso when we install fiber we usually leave several unterminated fibers for expansion. Usually install 12 strand and only terminate 4-6 fibers. -
Typical percentage of motion/activity in various scenarios
jeromephone replied to TheSauce's topic in System Design
We find you almost have to do this after the fact until you get a history in that exact location it is hard to tell we have cameras in an ER area and they run 24/7 on motion. We have just kept enlarging the storage as cameras and the customer wanted higher resloution recordings. The good news is that storage is getting pretty cheap. -
We use snap and seal on rg6 you use a special stripper and it takes off the correct amount of shielding you push on the connector and then put it in the tool it is on will not come off pricey but you don't have do overs.

What kind of shop ? Are you running 3 phase? Have you tried grounding the case to the DVR. Also there are gound loop devices that you can install inline.
-
I always thought the white would break down in the sunlight before the black? Anyway you look at it having to go back during the warrentee period is a killer. I agree with rory if in doublt put it in conduit if feasible.
-
I think when we have to run outside we just run and outdoor rated RG-6 and an outdoor rated power cable. I will look and see if I can get a number for outdoor rated siamese (If it exists) The problem with using regular cable outside is the ultraviolet can deterioate the cable and any water will migrate through the whole cable in a very short period of time. Just found a WestPenn Product indoor outdoor rated called aquaseal. Not cheap but cheaper than having a crap install.
-
If you are running it outside and it is not outdoor rated you will eventually have problems. I prefer purchasing through the bigger suppliers. I get a price close to what you stated plus free shipping and I know if I have a problem they will stand behind the product. My experiences with EBay have not been so good.

It is not too tough to create the DSL link look at Patton Ind and PI MFG both have the devices. You simply hook a pair of wires to one end plug in patch cord and connect to your network power up and repeat at of the other end.
-
I don't know if this is the proper section but I have 2 ptz cameras connected to a geo gv-net they are two different mfgs one is a nuvico the other is a generic they are both running pelco p and have seperate addresses however they both move whenever one or the other is selected. Is this a termination problem or do I possible have a short. Some of the lnstructions for the nuvico say to terminate the last camera but I don't know if that is necessary.

Advice for a door camera please
jeromephone replied to dz-015's topic in Installation Help and Accessories
can you get directly above the door ? I would consider a pinhole camera in that header that would give you a full face view and would not require drilling the brick -
The baluns are the best way to go. an alternative if you are thinking about IP is to use a network extender to in effect create a DSL link to the remote location. One pair is all that is necessary but I have seen units that use two pair for more bandwith. This works without dial tone on the lines.

Does Keyscan require a server
jeromephone replied to MiamiRob's topic in General Access Control Discussion
kEYSCAN does require a server but all info is sent to and stored on the acus if the server is down or disconnected the Acu have all the server info stored on them so the doors all function properly however you don't get the reporting info or access to the database to make changes or open and close doors remotely -
Here is a pic of a sanyo hd4000 overlooking a construction site

Sanyo 4 megapixel camera
jeromephone replied to jeromephone's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
yes I will post a night pic and download directly from the cam. I have a Panasonic 502 right next to this camera so I am hoping to get pics for a direct comparison. -
look into Viking electronics they have a doorbox with a built in camera that will go on an analog ext. Also look at aiphone they have some solutions with camera door release etc

What does anyone do about lightning protection on outdoor cameras. We usually don't put it on fixed cams mounted to the building. What about ptz? we have put some ptzs on light poles and did put lightning pro on those.

Do we need armoured cable for CCTV?
jeromephone replied to missmimi's topic in Installation Help and Accessories
I should have said we run the direct bury in conduit. Larger conduit is always better and leaving a string makes adds much easier. In MI we also have to deal with frost as in a roadway it may be 4 feet in the ground. We were on a job where someone left a coax in the bottem of a manhole it rained and the standard coax wicked the water right up about 6 feet of cable in a couple of days. I can't think the cost difference in the cable prices is worth taking a chance.
