Opinions on ACTi 1.3 megapix cameras ?
jeromephone replied to ak357's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
I just got a Acti 3411 and am trying it out in our shop next to a unbranded 420 line analog camera and it the Acti seem a bit crisper. Also the software that comes with it allows you to setup a 16 cam nvr. -
why go to all that trouble? why not buy a pump with built in card reader/prox etc? I would think the fuel pump vendors would have this in place as we have had unattended commerical fueling stations for years.

great I bought the dome model and have had it sitting on the shelf in my shop I guess I had better stick to infrared or some other type of low light camera

Panasonic WV-NS202A Outside Mounting Arrangement
jeromephone replied to minko's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
I have installed some of these cameras and you will need the video-alarm housing which will give you a blower etc and is setup for outdoor mounting. I cannot rememeber the exact price but I think the mount and housing are around 500.00 -

Cat5 w/ punchdown blocks
jeromephone replied to vse's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
keep a length of 1/2 pvc condit to use to push pull wires. Cheap flexible and when you leave it in a ceiling some olace you are only out a couple of bucks. Plus being plastic you don,t have to worry about shorting out something. -
Check out Proxim they have all kinds of long hall direct line of site stuff that can be licensed depending on what country you are in.

i got one of those myself. It came preloaded with open office. Did you load windows on the 4 meg version? they had a demo with eight meg that was running xp but I have not tried loading it on the 4 meg model. I like the unit and am thinking of haveing they for a service guy to fill out workorders and then print them at the shop no more trying to read the alleged handwriting. Can you run your multi site client for geo on these units?

I think that it just means that the cctv guys are going to have to get more education on networking vlans routers etc. I feel like I have a pretty good handle on the It stuff but I also know that if the customer wants some fancy intergeration etc I can hire people for the project if necessary. there are a lot of IT folks on the street right now with a lot of the big businesses outsourcing and downsizing. the other thing is ten years ago PCs were somewhat of mystery to many poeple today a lot more people have at least the ability to run basic office apps and use the internet. the resident geek is not particulary necessary.

Cameras With 4P4C Connectors
jeromephone replied to Wolverine's topic in General Access Control Discussion
Look into replacing the whole thing. I know that is not really the answer to your problem but in the long run you will be much better off with standard bnc connectors etc as if one of your cameras goes a lot of the time they have the cables molded into them and you won't find an exact replacement. -
wireless through a substation
jeromephone replied to jisaac's topic in Video Transmission/Control Devices
Check out Proxim or Firetide they probably have done these type of installs. Look at doing a site survey /spectrum analysis. That is the only way you can tell what is going on also can you go over the top for your line of site connection? 5.8 Mhz instead of 2.4 ? -

They were on poles on the street corners the dome enclosure was probably 20 in in diameter. everythin was inside the dome. I saw them on the streets or Reading and in and around London. I should have a picture, hopefully today as my son will post all his pics and I had him take a picture of the units. -
using state ID instead of proximity cards
jeromephone replied to sinbad's topic in General Access Control Discussion
We are doing something similar for a customer who already has mag stripe info We use KEYSCAN and they will write a custom program for you that will capture the mag info in the format the card uses you will have to submit some samples so they can check the format. However this is not a recommended solution. RFID from the start is much more secure and you eliminate the problem of lost cards. If I lose my State issued ID I can get another one but it will be the same as my old one. NOw there are two IDs that open doors etc. With RFID lost card = new number delete old. Mag readers are also a maint issue when used outdoors. PM me if you want for all problems we had using and ID issued for other reasons. -

pelco has an Ip system but have not used it. SOme locking systems use more power than a poe system can supply. -

I am havieng some choppy video problems on playback with some 1480 units If I go to 512 video memory up from 256 could that help. Likewise I am thingking about going to 2 gig ram from one. I guess what I am asking are these up grades going to help performance or am I just putting in more memory that the system won't address anyway.?

We have set up a pelco mini-dome ptz (SD4w1)in a funeral home and have it hooked directly to a sony dvd recorder(DVDirect MC5). The video looks great on the monitor but it is poor on the recorded dvd I am recording in hd format with composite input. I have tried various lighting levels and camera settings and still have a dark line/shadow around people and fixed objects like chairs. I did some test recordings and at some angles it looked as if I had dark glasses on. In the shop I tried a regular camcorder and the video looked much better. I guess the question is can I use the Pelco or do I need to go to something else. What would be the difference between the camcorder and the pelco? Would a conference room camera such as a Sony EVi-D30 be the way to go? Thank you I know this may be a little off topic but would appreciate any help you can give me

I don't think I have any splits or Tees in the line but I will check. Any reccommendations as to other mini ptz cams? As to the question as to why anyone would want to record a funeral service I have no idea. That would be the last thing I would want. -
Anyone ever Heat Shrink RG59?
jeromephone replied to rory's topic in Installation Help and Accessories
We always use a splice kit as mentioned in the other posts. For something pole mounted or on the side of a building we use a carlon box with the proper sized compression fittings mounted on the bottem of the box. It is pretty cheap and you can re-enter if necessary.
