We have had good luck with Vitek day\night ird 30 only thing to watch is power them from and individual power supply or a multi that is isolated outputs. or you may have ground loop problems

Do you reccommend doing a daily reboot of geovision systems? I know how to set it up. I just wondered if most set their systems up this way. Also I have the usual 10 to 20 gig partion for os etc but do you think the systems can be affected if the storage area is filled to the point where there is only a gig or so left on the storage partions ?

How do you guys get over the 300' Cat5 restriction?
jeromephone replied to rory's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
The DSL from the service provider probably comes in over cat 3 or less. You can put your DSL router wherever you want as that can connect to your switch so you could have the switch on one end of the building and the dsl router located anywhere withing 300 feet. -
RG-11 ?? Coaxial Cable
jeromephone replied to kpatterson's topic in Video Transmission/Control Devices
That is usually used for the backbone of a cable tv feed you run rg11 and then branch off from that with taps for the indivadual drops. I would not use it as the connectors will run about 8.00 ea and you will need special crimpers for this probably one time use. -
your pic is what I was rambling on about

Is cat 3 cable just as good as cat 5??
jeromephone replied to GunRunner1's topic in Installation Help and Accessories
Yes there is cat three, is only rated for 10mps on data. Cat 5 and six are engineered with different twist and seperation on different pairs to give the higher data ratings. Three pair is a pain. If you are installing phone most new ones use one or two pairs so you have a spare automatically when you run a drop but with three pair you are always short plus it is harder to keep organized on the 66 block. I think you will find that video baluns also have limitations on cat 3 vs cat 5 -
they make an inline splice for cat5 that is like a 110 punchdown we have used that and it appears to work well. for phone work if we don't care how it looks or we have to do a quick splice we will use the 3m beans to splice cat3 not pretty but they work. For data on cat 5 we always try for a Jack to Jack connection.

Panasonic BB-HCM581A vs WV-NS202A
jeromephone replied to andrewm568's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
I just got a ns202 this week and will be installing in an outdoor housing. I like the idea of the on board storage card and the physical size of the unit will be going in a high crime area so we shall see how it holds up -
We do a lot of fiber for data but have done not for CCTV. We always seem to find some cheaper alternative. Often you can put in an additional server cheaper than you can install the fiber and get the necessary electonics for both ends. We use the Panduit product but we are looking at getting a fusion machine to eliminate the problems with terminations we have tried both the no polish cam locks to the 3 m hotmelts and they all have some disadvantages. On long runs there is certaintly a reason to test the fiber prior to installation. We just had to rip out 600 ft because of multiple failures. If you do get into fiber a good tester in a necessity.

What type of coax to use? Comments on this Balun for Cat 5
jeromephone replied to GunRunner1's topic in Installation Help and Accessories
you might want to run underground rated as you will get some condensation in the under ground pipe -

Electric Strike Installations
jeromephone replied to 501's topic in General Access Control Discussion
We are getting into access control more and more and I don't want to do anything with the actual door. I have a locksmith who I sub to. We run the wire and such but I want to limit my liability and he has a whole van full of tools I don't have to own. -

I like the altronix isolated power supplies seems to prevent some of the ground loop problems we were having with vitek Ird32 cameras
-

powerline networking
jeromephone replied to VST_Man's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
Does the system work if the camera and dvr are being fed by different transformers? -
I have had problems with the Vitek IRD32 cameras they are 24v ac. I tried filters etc and ended up with using either individual power supplies or changing the altronix 16 cam power supply to their isolated version. THis problem has cost me big bucks trying to figure it out as it has occured on this same site with two different buildings.

We are finally getting started with a network for a city. Has anyone done a mesh using proxim . We will start out with a back haul and about 5 camera locations. The stuff seems rather pricey but I can't affford to not have this work properly. Any Info or things to watch out for would be appreciated.

the back haul is a seperate link we have three freq we are working with 4.9 2.4 and I beleive the backhaul is 5.8. City has to get a license for the 4.9 I believe.

Had a hosiptal want us to install a wireless monitor to allow paitent in a radiation room to communicate with the technican running the machine. worked great until we closed the 1 foot thick lead/steel door. I think we are going with the wired solution.
-
We do a lot of data and avoid all plugs if possibe we always install a jack and use a patch cord. The big problem with plugs is that you have to be sure you have the correct plug for stranded or solid wire and they are hard to tell apart. if you make patch cords with solid wire they are prone to failing. We buy all our patch cords as they are so cheap it hardly makes sense to make our own.
