I think it's just a gimmick that Best Buy has been using to hype their stock. The storyt goes that Best Buy can sell better than its competitors because they offer on-site tech support. Do you really think that a bunch of kids being paid minimun wage are going to be able to configure a router, or trouble shoot computer problems, and do it consistantly? Ha!

What's Bush got to do with the price of gas? Is it his fault gasoline consumption is up each & every year since the Model T? Is Sept 11 his fault? Is it his fault Chinese consumption is up 40% per year? Is it his fault no new US refineries have been built in over 30 years? Is it his fault wall street speculators hype the price of oil? Is it his fault Congress wont allow more drilling in the Alaska? IS it his fault that even enviro-friendly energy projects like wind mill farms get hysterical community opposition (NIMBY = not in my backyard)? Americans need to look in the mirror before they start blaming others.

As much as the customers budget permits. For a 4 channel I wouldn't go under 160, 9 channel 300~500, 16 channel 500~600 You dont want to sacrifice FPS or file size due to undersize drives. -
Did you check with your CCTV supplier like ADI to see what other wireless options are available. I don't have my ADI catalog with me now. They aren't that expensive, and you save all the labor of a cable installation.

>we will ALL be selling wireless network cameras with built in storage... >forget the DVR, forget the HDD arrays, it will all be IN the camera it will all >be solar powered it will all be configurable over the web and it will all be controlled from your home PC. I doubt I will be ever selling cameras with built in storage so the bad guys can steal the camera and eliminate all record of their activity. Doesn't sound like very good security. Also doubt K-Mart will be selling quality CCTV equipment. Security equipment was never a mass marketed item.

If the picture quality is bad you may want to consider RMA'ing it back to DM. I've found some unit that have a sucky picture, i've sent it back and it improved. I have one unit i wasnt happy with picture quality , a Sprite 2 9channel, and now it got other issues as well so its back to DM.

That sounds like a pricey housing, even for a Pelco. Let me ask you what shutter speed are you setting on that $150 camera?

Even with the Reg system I would asume that a few things could throw it off, such as car/plate not in camera's field of view. You end up with video of the side of the car. A problem especially on wide streets. A plate mounted to the car very high up or not in the "normal" spot. A DVR with too low frames per second causes gaps on a car moving fast. A car making a turn causes the plate to become out of focus, not to mention plate positining difficulties. (not good to mount such camera's on a street corner). A dvr with poor resolution, or low file size will still result in poor images too.

Spiders are eating my hard drive!

Rory, I'd think you'd have a problem with the Gecko lizards crawling over the cams trying to eat the bugs. -
Accessing a Cctv on a Network behind a Router via Web

>No, all the wired Linksys Routers I have used in the past couple months >4 and 8 channel versions all wired) have DDNS installed. I have no static >IP and my DDNS account has been working flawlessly from day 1. Actually >I have never used a wireless router. I looked at a Linksys BEFSR41 wired 4 port router and I dont see any provision for Dyndns service. Dyndns support site indicates only 1 Linksys router has a provison for the dyndns client. What model router are you using. Maybe i have an old version. >It may also depend on how often your ISP updates your IP though, not >sure, mine doesnt update it that often, maybe every other day. Most ISP's never change the lease on the IP address, unless you power the DSL/Cable modem down for an extended period. >The last part you mentioned, I dont understand, doesnt seem to have >any bearing on the current situation. As far as the other stuff like Mail >Exchange etc, It doesnt have anything to do with accessing a DVR from a >remote location when the DVR has no static IP. Rememeber we are >talking accessing DVRs here without a static IP. The last part I mentioned was cut from the DynDns website, and lists what may not work with the client on the router. Specifically they say that the host account may get deleted due to inactivity. Done know if that happened to anyone yet. -
Accessing a Cctv on a Network behind a Router via Web
CSG replied to securityusa's topic in Computers/Networking
Rory, There is only one model router from LinkSys (WRT54G ) that supports DynDns client, also there are some glitches with that. I think thats a wireless router no? The Good The good news with this router is that it probably won't send abusive updates and get your host blocked. This is a good thing. Also, the router properly identifies itself to us when it submits an update, providing the model number and firmware. This may sound like a small thing, but it makes it much easier for us to troubleshoot when there is a problem. The Bad The update client interface has no way to set a number of optional parameters. Specifically there is no support for: Turning on the Enable Wildcard option Setting the Mail Exchanger field Setting the Backup MX option If you are using this router to update a host in our Custom DNS service, the above is not an issue. If you are using Dynamic DNS or Static DNS, this may be a problem for you. Second, the router has no provision for sending an update if your IP address has not changed within the past 28 days. This is not a problem if you are using Custom DNS or Static DNS, but if you are using Dynamic DNS this may result in your host being deleted after 35 days. This can be avoided by purchasing an Account Upgrade. Third, in order to update a host in either the Custom DNS or Static DNS service you will need to specify the service in the Hostname field along with the actual host name. For example, for a host in Custom DNS you would enter example.com&system=custom and for a host in Static DNS you would enter: example.homeip.net&system=statdns -
Not using IR illumination.

You can also try places that sell Central A/C supplies. They sell those flex conduit setups for hooking up the outside compressors. They call them whip kits.

Rory, I would expect a top notch power supply (Altronix/Pelco) to have pottable outputs for each camera, that way one could adjust the voltage going to each camera, tweak it in to exactly 12v or 24v accordingly. However I haven't been able to find this feature. The only thing I see from Pelco are 24v/28v output terminals. Do any power supplies have adjustable outputs?

Can someone recommend a compression crimper?
CSG replied to jjjjjjj's topic in Installation Help and Accessories
. We have not had any problems of the semiconductor not going in the tip and the digicon fittings we have are rated up to quadshield, so no issues on some of the jackets being thicker or thinner. Maybe these liberty cable fittings are a knockoff of the digicon ones, or maybe their center conductor is not stiff enough. There is a lot of different cable styles out there, some have really soft center conductors, other higher quality ones have fairly stiff ones... The cable companies here use nothing but digicon fittings and commscope branded cable. I am not sure what brand of wire we are currently using, we buy siamese wire from our local Graybar store and it's center conductor wire is very stiff and have had no issues with it at all with the digicon fittings. I can't vouch for liberty cable products, but I can for the digicon ones as I have used them personally and don't see anywhere near the issues we had from our hex crimp fittings. We've come to hate them because we were having a failure rate with the Liberty connectors as high as 50%. Not only were we wasting our time, but alot of connectors went into the garbage. Or you get to play the guessing game as to which end of the cable has the bad connector, so you trash both of them. Of course its always fun going back up a high ladder, or repostioning the scissorlift to get to the camera housing. A big problem with these compression type connectors is that the COAX master tool doesn't really grip the cable while the connector is getting compressed, so the cable wants to back out of the tool. Also, sometimes the brass pin would not gain adequate protrusion after compression. Nah, for my money I want to crimp the center conductor, insert it into the BNC, and hex crimp the ferrule. It gaurantee's a perfect & permanent connection -
I've just installed three Sony SSC-73 domes, very satisfied with the results.[/img]

Those Digicon are like the Liberty Wire & Cable Coax Master. https://secure.libertycable.com/ecomm/catalog/cat_page.php?group=77 I don't mean to offend but they SUCK! There is no way to ensure the center conductor goes into the tip. So if it misses, it just curls up inside. I've sectioned a number of failed connectors , took pictures and emailed to Liberty tech support. They had no anwser. These type of connectors are very sensitive to cable manufacturer. Variations in jacket thickness will cause failure. However I even ordered a pallet of Liberty's RG-59 cable since the connectors are designed for it, but the connector system still sucks. I have a Coax master tool and stripper, and couple bags of connectors I will sell for cheap if you are foolish enough to try. Three piece crimp is the best. -

They also have a cross reference page where you can reference the connector to the right tool. If you call Paladin tech support they will walk you through it. I ordered the tool and connectors from Newark in One online. I got 200 Amphenol connectors for $1.00 each, plus they stock Paladin tools. http://www.newarkinone.com/
