Is there a "best in class" type guide for IP cameras?
alpine0000 replied to Digiscan's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
http://lmgtfy.com/?q=Vivotek+IP8332 the second link (http://www.vivotek.com/downloadfiles/downloads/datasheets/ip8332datasheet_en.pdf) says: "In order to adapt to constantly changing outdoor lighting conditions, the IP8332 features a removable IR-cut filter as well as IR illuminators effective up to 15M for superior image quality around the clock." -

Looking for an IP cam, that you wont be frustrated with, and having $350 as the HIGH end of your budget might be living in a dream world. I think $350 should be the very LOW end of your budget, and maybe ~$500 or so could be the high end. Then again, prices on these things get cheaper and cheaper every month. It's been 6 months or so since I've done any shopping around. You could also check the classified section of the forum for some decent cameras at a bargain price. The old cliche "you get what you pay for" has never been more true than in the world of cameras. -
Is there a "best in class" type guide for IP cameras?
alpine0000 replied to Digiscan's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
I think Vivotek cameras are a good bang for your buck. Far from the best cameras on the market, but when you consider the price of only ~$500, I think my Vivotek camera is pretty impressive. But, like most cameras, they have their weaknesses. Also, there really cant be a "if you have X dollars to spend, then buy this camera" type of guide, because it all depends on what you are using it for, how much light you have available, how far away your focal point is, whether you are using it indoors or outdoors, PTZ or fixed, dome or not, what features are required for your specific application, etc etc... It's just so hard to have a perfect camera for all applications. The best thing a person could do is to give a budget, let us know what you are using it for, what features are important to you, and take it from there. The other problem is that CCTV technology lives life in the fast lane. Every time you turn your head, theres a newer camera out with better/newer technology. It's hard to keep up with that from the standpoint of somebody who would be making these "guides" that you are asking about -
Exacq and Mobotix
alpine0000 replied to Megapixelman's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
I have a few -- but I knew about some of them going in. I can't get the exacqReplay to work anywhere except my home computer. For example, I have the client software installed on a computer at work, and when i try to do an exacqReplay, i get an error that says "cant open file c:\[blah_blah_blah] - specified file not found". Not sure if this is a bug, or if its not supposed to work outside of the network that the server is on, but its annoying. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the client software with no luck. hi! i met the same problem, did you figure out any solution? if you do, really appreciate for your sharing! No, I havent figured that out yet. But, to be honest, I rarely use that feature anyways. To be more honest, I dont use the client all that much either unless I'm at home. When I'm away from home, I'm almost exclusively using the iOS app on my iPhone, which is why I haven't dug any deeper into that issue, and really don't care all that much Shoot, for all I know, it could've been fixed in an update over the last few months -- I just haven't checked. -

I wish you could "password protect" the software. For example, often times other people use my computer 'real quick' at work for looking stuff up, or remoting into client sites. I am always worried that when I walk away, they could easily open up exacqvision and check out my cameras without me knowing. Creating another account on this computer for guests is not an option, and its a headache to keep deleting the server IP out of the exacq list of servers in the settings, and then re-adding it back. My old client software would just ask for a username and pw upon trying to open the software. I liked that. I wish you could choose a start AND an end time for searching video, and not have it round to the nearest 30 minute mark or whatever it does. If i want to search only from 1:13pm -1:18pm, it automatically defaults to searching/listing video in a 2-hour block from 1pm-3pm. You can zoom in on the timeline to narrow down the search block, but still not as smooth as it could be. And darnit, let me start my search from 1:13pm, not 1pm! Looks like somebody at exacq is listening, or either that, they had the same ideas. Exacq 4.7 knocks those two things off the checklist. Thank you, exacq! -
ip camera installation help
alpine0000 replied to fsamoti's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
I don't think you could have been any more vague about what you want people reply with. Give details. Ask questions. Get answers. -
Did anybody else update to the latest version of exacq client software (4.7) and notice that the search has improved a lot?? You can now specify a 'start' AND an 'end' time. Thank goodness!!! Even though the search hasnt gotten any faster, for me, this is still huge " title="Applause" /> They haven't updated their blog yet, so I'm still trying to figure out what all has changed in this version. Anybody notice any other new stuff in this version?

Exacqvision got better!
alpine0000 replied to alpine0000's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
Don't for get to pay your yearly upgrade fees to get the update i've been meaning to talk to you... i *might* switch to avigilon when my exacqvision subscription expires (april 8, 2012), or maybe even a little bit before. the only thing holding me back is the high price of the iOS gateway license. hmmm.... decisions decisions... -
My earthquake footage on camera
alpine0000 posted a topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
*update* - see my next post a couple posts down for the footage Had a 5.8 to 5.9 earthquake here in VA today at 1:51pm. I was at work, and our building shook like crazy and they evacuated us. When I get home, I'm going to check my DVR and see if you can see anything good on the cameras. Anybody else capture anything exciting today? -
My earthquake footage on camera
alpine0000 replied to alpine0000's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
Well, the video isnt as cool as I had hoped. In fact, it doesnt look bad at all. Things in my office were falling over and the lights hanging from the ceiling were swaying back and forth. In the video, things start to noticeably shake around 1:51:23 (1:51pm and 23 seconds). Unfortunately, my cameras are only recording 3 or 4 frames per second, instead of 15 or 30, so its much harder to tell that things are shaking. You can see the little tv tray table thing in the living room shaking, as well as the colored bottles in the center of the dining room table. And various things on the deck are noticeable too. It was much worse in person than the terrible quality video portrays. http://www.flopit.net/earthquake.exe Don’t "run" that from your web browser. Choose “download”, and save it on your desktop. The executable is self-contained and opens up the video and the exacq software. It doesnt install anything at all on your computer. I know some of you are concerned about downloading an .exe file... Thats just how exacq exports video. If it concerns you, don't download it The file is about 10MB. Not too big at all. -
Sony SNCDH280 - Anything bad about it?
alpine0000 replied to Guest's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
Looks just like Apple's HDR technology on the iPhone. I haven't seen Sony's images first-hand, but if it does even half as good as my iPhone does with HDR, it's really nice. http://www.apple.com/iphone/features/camera.html -

The phpBB mobile web interface for CCTV forum -- BAD!!
alpine0000 posted a topic in Questions about this site
I've been using my ipad to surf these forums for a while, and it has worked great. A few days ago, though, I came here and all the sudden the mobile version of phpBB loads, and there is no option to view the full site and disable this mobile version (The mobile version is TERRIBLE by the way -- it lacks SO much). I have tried everything on my ipad, from clearing the cache/history/cookies, to rebooting. I thought it was something I had clicked, but nothing seems to work to get me away from this mobile version, so I think you guys probably just made a change recently Please offer an option for users to disable the mobile version (usually there is a link at the bottom of a mobile page that says "disable mobile" or "view full site", but this is not the case with CCTV forum), or get rid of it all together. Thanks -
The phpBB mobile web interface for CCTV forum -- BAD!!
alpine0000 replied to alpine0000's topic in Questions about this site
Thanks! If you want to have a mobile browser option, we should figure out a way to allow the user to disable it if they want -
how can i tell my iPad to act as a desktop browser and not allow mobile sites to load? if you know how, im all ears also, the website doesnt show up in the browser as m.cctvforum.com. it just shows cctvforum.com

Ahh, I just saw this after I posted: viewtopic.php?f=13&t=26462 So *YOU'RE* the guilty one here. Uggg It was a good idea in theory, but my iPad is now unusable to surf CCTV forum. Please offer a way to disable this mobile version. Not sure if you can edit the php file and make this happen (I am the admin of my own phpBB forum, but do not offer a mobile version), but other sites have a link at the bottom of the page to allow you to view the full site. CCTV forum mobile version does not. Nobody wants to be forced to view a mobile version of a website on an iPad Also, the forum index isnt the same in both. For example, the IP camera sub forum is not in the same category. Just an FYI.

Panasonic WV-NP502 vs. 484
alpine0000 replied to mike_va's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
Wow. Does the IP cam have an option for 2x sense up? Thanks for the comparison. I have the 484 and am looking at a few diff IP cams to replace it. -
Exacq and Mobotix
alpine0000 replied to Megapixelman's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
I have a few -- but I knew about some of them going in. Search is slow. And Smart Search -- you cant use it until the "Search" is done loading/buffering. It's kind of a bummer to have to wait for a minute or two every time you click the search button. For a home-user like myself, its not that big of a deal because I don't search very often. But, in a corporate or Loss Prevention type setting, I could see it really annoying staff. The server software upgrade isnt as easy as it should be, but it's still not hard at all. Just another area that could use improvement. Creating another account on this computer for guests is not an option, and its a headache to keep deleting the server IP out of the exacq list of servers in the settings, and then re-adding it back. My old client software would just ask for a username and pw upon trying to open the software. I liked that. They dont support mobotix, and dont 'officially' support Avigilon yet Fees each year to keep the software current. If I record my Vivotek cam using h.264, i cannot export recorded video in .avi or any other format for some reason, so I just have to use up a ton more disk space for no reason by choosing JPEG. This also chokes my streaming video in the client more than if I were using h.264, but oh well, I have no choice... I want to be able to export recorded video if I need to, so I guess I will continue to use JPEG I could probably think of a few more minor things, but nothing MAJOR that would stop me from using it for my application. That said, it is *still* one of my favorite VMS's (not that I have tons of experience with a wide array of VMS software, but I still like it). -

Small Casino Surveillance Setup
alpine0000 replied to chief_lam's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
Make sure he understands that with megapixel, if he keeps the same size drive space, his retention (obviously) will be cut drastically from what he had with his analog cameras. Not sure if the casino requires a certain number of days of retention or not... -
Purpose of IR Illuminator
alpine0000 replied to mujju_433's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
It cannot sense anything in pitch dark. Every camera needs *some* light. This is why you need an illuminator. Hence, the term for cameras that are "ir sensitive". -
Is the iOS app out for Avigilon Control Center yet?
alpine0000 replied to alpine0000's topic in IP/Megapixel Cameras and Software Solutions
So then using a laptop with an Intel Atom processor would be ok (or even overkill?) for an Avigilon server? Or are you only talking about the clients? -

They said it would be out by the end of June, and I'm getting excited to see it. I was on their website, and didn't see any mention of it. Maybe it's out and they just haven't updated their website yet? Or, most likely, it's not out yet, as we still have a few more days left in June anyways Sooo, does anybody know if it's been released yet? If so, have you played with it, and what did you think of it? Can't wait to hear some feedback on it, and hopefully even get to test out their software myself.
