Attacking past a NAT and Windows firewall does seem like it would be a lot of work, so in most cases, unless you are putting a system in the Pentagon, no one is going to do high level hacking at a small installation. As to port 80, I thought it really didn't matter what port you choose, because they use port scanners that look for any open ports, not just 80. However, your post got me to reading on the internet, and I see where that can take days to do, so they often just pick common ports to scan. So I'm glad you noted that, and I'm going to change the port to something in the 50,000 range. As to the DVR software... I don't know how well it would hold up to a brute force attack. I don't know if all DVR software security is equal, or if some is real bad. Seems like all they would have to do is make it so the software only allows for a few tries before locking out that user name. Matt

Hello: I'm wondering if someone can help me. I have a Hikvision / Netvision system I want to access from the outside via internet. It is a high-security environment, so I'm wondering what the likely hood is of the system getting hacked. I have DSL, and of course I would have NAT Turned on in the router, and the Windows Firewall turned on on the server. The password for the system would be something like Lkv4$@9. I know people can find our static IP and open required port by port scanning, but is my security limited to whatever Netvision has in their software? How safe can I tell my client they will be? Actually, I control the entire network, because we wanted it to be unfettered with their everyday network. So the two do not touch each other at all. So I control the router myself. I can open up ports. I wanted to avoid a VPN because of the more complex work of setting it up on the client side, in peoples homes after hours. So my security concern is with the open port. How hard is it to hack with brute force against Netvisions username/password access? Should I drop the simple idea, and just go with a VPN? Thanks for your advise. Matt

RAID 5 WARNING: I'm not a Raid genius, but some folks warn CCTV installers to stay away from Raid 5. The clients were taking up to 10 minuets to pull video off of the Raid-5. I think the problem was more Hikvision software, than my RAID, but I guess RAID processing does have some read/write efficiency problems. Obviously, Soundy is not having the problem, as he is using Raid-5. I would be interested to know if any thinks there is anything to the zdnet article. Matt

Wow... I've never seen that packed of a computer. Hopefully you wont have any heating issues... I'd make sure you keep the fan clean. It would be nice to have one of the large side fans on a system like that. Sounds like a nice install though... using RGB/HDMI/BNC... heck... you've got it all!

Ok, You are really using 4 video outputs, so I see why you need two video cards. I do wonder if you would not have been better off getting two 1240 or 1480 cards in stead of the 1120. Seems like with 16 channels, that is a lot to process. On the other hand, if you are using all analog cameras, I guess it should handle it, but your FPS would be 5fps per channel. Of course if not much movement is happening in each camera, you would get more fps on the others. I hope tech support takes care of you.

Adam: Just curious, why did you choose to build a system with two 8-channel 1120 boards, as opposed to one 16-channel 1240 system? Wouldn't the 16-channel 1240 be the same processing power, but yet only take up one CPU Card? You also say you are running dual video cards. Why would you need two video cards in one PC these days, seeing that most all video cards have two outputs for dual monitors anyway? Matt

Using an inexpensive Intel DG41TY LGA775 with an inexpensive Intel Core-2 Duo. Also, 4gb ram, and external 512mb Video Card . I assume you are using an external video card. If not, that is probably your problem....

I have only two installs right no in the field. One is a gv-1480 16ch PCI and it has never froze... three years running. The other is this new one I just put in, an 1240 pci-e. It has only been running a week, but so far, nothing has crashed or frozen. I'm running it on Windows 7 with 4GB, and it is 64 bit. ( I went out on a limb, as win7 64 bit has probably not had too much field testing...)

This is with a GV-1240 16ch PCI-E card. It wasn't really a "problem" as Windows was seeing the card. It just wasn't bring up the usual "new hardware wizard".

I have to second this post. That is insane. Just a little bit of "field testing" would have demonstrated that putting the power on the bottom of the card is really a pain. So you are not alone... I had to really fight it as well.

Just built up a Geovision from scratch, using Windows 7 64 bit. Worked great, no problems. Well, actually, at first I was trying to do it with version 8.32, before I realized that i needed .33, so thankfully, the dongle I purchased had a point .33 CD with it, and then the drivers installed perfectly. I rebooted, and everything was there. The only thing that didn't work according to plan was that Windows 7 did not pull up the "found new hardware" wizard. But it did see it as a "Unknown PCI Device" under devise manager.

Is this a "Cop" brand unit? A search on the internet found this link on their site to the view software: http://www.cop-eu.com/sections/specs/full_page_specs/index.php?product=15-VT04-CDRW&v=downloads Don't forget it may not be Vista compatible.

Does anyone know what the FPS is for recording in 640x480 or D1 for the NV5000? They only list a 120fps, but I suspect that it is for CIF resolution. Bugs me that they act like it is unimportant. Anyway, if someone knows that info, I would appreciate it. (I'm trying to compare it to a Digimerg VB308251 stand alone that offers 60fps in 4CIF.)

I've had my share of exporting problems from Aver in exporting. It is kind of making me think of Geovision for the next install. But, in any event, have you upgraded to the latest version? 7.7.0.0015SP1 would be the latest. In once case, I thought for sure the video files were corrupt, because I was getting out of sync audio, and jumpy video etc... They had me upgrade to the latest version, and it solved the problem. On the other hand, after that upgrade, I did some further testing, and found another section of video that crashes when I try to export it. I then did some experimenting with our 6480 exp demo unit here at the office, and most exports went fine, but once again, I found one that just locked everything up. These are on high end CPU systems dedicated to nothing by Aver. Both systems are giving me exporting problems. So I'm not really confident in the export these days. Hoping it gets more stable as time crawls along. matt

Actually, I dragged my feet on the project, but just yesterday ordered a different one altogether. I will post my results when it comes in . It is a non branded h.264 unit from a company called Connections Plus out of Florida. They sent a really nice glossy catalog to me, so I thought I would give it a try. 60fps @ d1 resolution. This means 7.5 fps per channel, as it is an 8 channel. I am anxious to compare the quality between this and Aver, as this unit will save some money. It is, however, a linux based system (with mouse and VGA). This means I probably won't like the software as much compared to Aver. But we will see when the unit gets here. I have never done stand-alones before, so this is new to me. I have always felt more comfortable building my own CPU and plopping a Aver or Geo card in it. The cost on this DVR was $549.00. I'll be adding a 80.00 1TB drive to it, and of course a monitor.

Yes, I agree, especially since I have had a Geovision running in the field for three years not and it has 99% file fragmentation, and runs flawlessly!

Hello: Just wondering what peoples opinion was of defragging DVR drives. I didn't think it needed to be done at all, but I have been having some export crashes on one of my AVer 6480exp. in the field. I looked at the drive and noticed that total fragmentation was 99%, and with 49% file fragmentation. I asked Aver Tech support what they thought of this, and this was the answer: Hi Matt, Due to the nature of the dvr constantly writing to the HDD and over-writing files over and over your fragmentation of the HDD will be high. We normally suggest doing a monthly clean-up of the drive to keep it fresh if you are worried about the HDD failing or not responding. Regards, Customer Care AVerMedia USA I find this hard to believe. I have a Geovision system that has been running for 3 years with no problems. It has the same 99%/49% defrag situation, and works fine. Further, you can't even defrag a drive when it has only 1% free space on it, which is typical with CCTV drives. And to have to do this once a month? Is Aver serious? Has anyone found defragging necessary on NTSF drives in DVR systems? Thanks, Matt

Thanks for the response. I just thought it strange that my Geovision has been up for years with 99% fragmented drives, and now Aver wants me to defrag a drive that's been in use only a couple of months! (which is not possible on a CCTV drive with only 1% space free).

Great. I hope for an export option that will allow an entire section of video to be exported as one big .avi file, in stead of lots of small ones. Clients don't konw what to do with lots of little files. Also, .wmv is a great format as well. Thanks.

I think that will vary from state to state. Check the state you want to be in. In our state, you do not need to be licensed. (Michigan). But if you want to do anything with ALARMS, you do have to be licensed... and they run background checks etc.. Oddly enough, you can be a locksmith, installing locks all over town that you have the keys to, and you do not need to have a license. Go figure....

I have done many of these by simply using a screen capture utility, that has the ability to drag a box over the section of your screen that you want to capture. I have never really seen any degradation in quality, assuming you check your preferences for what type of output you want. Most of them will export to .dv, .mpg, .avi., .wmv etc.. If the VSM plays with audio, it should work, as the screen capture utilities capture the audio right from your sound card. I use NCH Debut video capture program, as well as some others. I ran into my first job last week that I could NOT capture...it was an L3 Communications in-car police video. It was encrypted, and somehow or another made it so I could not do it. But I have transferred dozens this way. Matt
