    How long to guarantee equipment?

I usually pass on the manufacturer warranty and handle all support questions in-house if I can. With that being said, its 1-3 years depending on the equipment.

    Memory Stick Backup?

Make sure that the DVR supports memory sticks larger than 512mb. I know some of them don't support the bigger memory sticks! Also, there is always the video out connection. You can sometimes charge a service fee to come out and transfer video onto a "laptop" or VCR for them! Of course they can always hook up a VCR to backup to as well.
  7. Can you configure a router to take a dynamic ip and host an ip camera? Using comcast, the IP changes every 4 hours now. Do I absolutely need a static IP for a network camera to work? Does the same apply for a networkable DVR?

    Photo Radar

Nothing really protects you agains laser...........I think my laser detector saved me about 3 MPH on the freeway once but I was going plenty over the speed limit and the 3 MPH didn't make a difference! But yes, my radar detector works great, I only use it on the freeways but it saves me alot too!

    Cold!

I would get a thermometer out there and find out the true temp, then call the DVR manufacturer and find out its limits! If something goes bad, you have a manufacturer warranty issue.

DVR not responding to remote view?

ARM has good support and you may have talked to somebody new! I would give them a call again on Monday and talk to somebody different! Are you able to access anything else remotly on the same network? Could it be a network problem? How is your DVR on the network now? Is it forwarded from the router? Static? Can you ping the IP and get anything?
  14. Here is a storage calculator. There are lots of them out there on the internet. This one needs to know the "average image size" and the specs of a DVR might mention that but you should be able to get that info from the manufacturer. http://www.luxriot.com/calcstorage.html

    anyone attemped buying over seas?

Yes, quantity is they key. I would factor in shipping and duty fees as one whole dollar amount and factor that into your COGS.

    anyone attemped buying over seas?

I buy alot of novelty based home wireless cameras and such from Taiwan. It works out great, and yes, awesome prices! I can offer this to my customers for $49.95 Comes with a 1.2Ghz Camera, Reciever, Cables, Power Supplies! I wouldn't buy overseas for high end equipment as it usually is not as good as the specs say they are. Also remember that you will pay duty fees to bring items in from overseas. I think I spent about $8,000 and paid $300 or so in duty fees. I also paid about $180 in shipping as well. Overall it was a very smooth transaction and I will be purchasing agian very soon. If you get to the ISC conventions, you can usually track down some vendors that are located overseas, plus you get to see the equipment first hand before you buy, rather than picking out of a catalog! Oh...Support is great actually! I had a camera go bad on a 4 camera wireless system and they sent me another one out asap with no additional fees. Usually they will try and wait for another order unless there is more than one bad item as shipping is spendy but they still take care of me!

You can download a copy of vista via bit torrent if you wanna play with it....
  18. rvryboy has a good point! We sell 65ft and 100ft ready made cables all day long to customers that are installing their own system! They prefer those to the Siamese cable. I even supply free loaner tools when they buy bulk siamese but they still prefer the $15.00 premade cables.

    Site Survey Camera

I thought about this too but I think you will have to get way too involved. Instead, use visio to layout the bid, then using a lens calculator, draw your triangle to simulate the field of view. This is all assuming your drawing is to scale. Then at that point, create an event on that triangle, so when you click on it, you get a "general" digital picture of what you will be covering. I about promise you that most of the time if you show a "general" picture of what you will see and a very very accurate picture of what you will see that the customer wont remember the difference. But most important, you are capturing wha the customer truly wants to capture. note: Sorry, I kinda jumped the gun and responded before reading the last paragraph. I see your point there, but thats still alot of work for a digital picture. Let the customer tell you want he generally wants and then you as the security professional can "set" the camera.
  21. Anybody use this camera? Thoughts? I'm looking for a good day/night IP cam but most importantly something with a decent low light capability. I will be using about 30 cams total so I need something reliable. Plus toshibas management software is cheap, but I plan on using Luxriot anyhow.

    Toshiba IK-WB02A

The camera wasn't too bad, given that there was decent light. Its a digital day/night camera and does alright at night. There's alot of features packed into the camera and I'll be using 15 of them on a job soon. Rory can comment some more on its performance if your interested! Not a bad camera overall for the money.
