    CCTV camera on forklifts

Could you post or email me a pic of the set up so I know how it's done? If plugged to a 9V battery. How long would it last if filmed continuously? Since the forklift moves around alot, where do u place the DVR?

    Security Policy - samples anyone?

Actually, I was asked to look at this example and drum up a similar one: To achieve a safe and secured warehouse environment, [company]is committed to:- 1. Take all necessary measures to protect all employees and persons including its contractors, tenants and the general public within the building. 2. Take all necessary security measures to protect the assets of the Company and the Assets of its customers. 3. Strictly adhere and comply with all security requirements of the authorities and co-operate with the Singapore Police Force and other government authorities to prevent, investigate and detect crimes. 4. Provide appropriate training to ensure that all employees are equipped with sufficient knowledge and awareness on warehouse security. 5. Provide sufficient security equipments at the warehouse for the purpose of providing a safe and secured warehouse operation. 6. Closely monitor the Company’s security service providers to ensure that a high quality level of security services are rendered to the Company at all times. 7. Continually review the security performance of the Company and its security contractors from time to time. 8. Enforce the display of in-house passes by the workers/service crew/staff in each building.

    Security Policy - samples anyone?

I have been tasked to draw up a security policy for my company, and I am not talking about Info Security policies but for the general security of the premises. I don't want to recreate the wheel. So, could someone help give me some samples of such security policies? Any help or tip would also be welcomed. Thanks

    Security Policy - samples anyone?

I am looking more for those one-page pledge type of policy rather than those guidelines/regulations that run more than a page. We already have a security manual for that. So, anyone?

No, I do mean CPD. That's what it says on the brochure.

    PC Vs Embedded

Okay, basically, I do not tinkle with the DVR. I contract out the maintenance of the DVR and the entire CCTV system. So, the 'headache' is the maintenance contractors. But still, it is up to me to specify or recommend what system is suitable for my company. With all these technical details which tends to confuse me, I am torn. Are there permutations of Embedded systems like XP-embedded DVR? Is this a PC-based DVR or an embedded one?? Honestly, I would not be able to know if the vendor has quoted me the low end Embedded system or the high end one for that matter. This makes it tough when evaluating which system to take. The reason for my interest in this subject is because I was recently queried by my management why I did not consider embedded DVRs and had opted for PC-based ones. My answers was basically that embedded DVRs are costlier.

    PC Vs Embedded

I was following another discussion thread: http://www.cctvforum.com/about706-15.html Very interesting but what a lot to take in, esp for a user like me. Not very familiar with the technicality as I am not into computers and stuff. So, what does it mean for end users like me? Embedded or PC-Based? So many factors to consider!

    PC Vs Embedded

Wow, what a debate we have here! I am still not sure which is a better system. I used to think that it is more costly to use embedded systems but I was recently surprised by a recent bid exercise where the embedded solution was cheaper than the pc-based one. I supposed there would be high end and low end products for both types of systems, right? But if we were to do an apple-to-apple comparison, i.e. matching each specs, could the embedded system be more costly? Another question, what is XP embedded? Is this an embedded system or a PC-based one?

    HUPER DVR

Well, not so sure about the fans but at least now my CCTV room ambient temp is about 22 deg C. Should be okay, right? But, I still do experience occasional HDD failures. My contractor will be replacing all the harddisks with this so-called specially-made-for-CCTV-DVR ones. I am beginning to get a little tired of this whole harddisk failure episode. Not sure if it is the hardware, software or installation problem. I was reading another discussion thread on PC based vs Embedded. Beginning to wonder if I should eventually switch to embedded. But the debate is quite a lot to swallow. I guess each has its own pros and cons Okay, I digress from the topic at hand. So, I will keep fingers crossed, hopefully, with this change of harddisks, things will improve!

    HUPER DVR

Anyone heard of Huper DVR? How is it?

    HUPER DVR

Actually, having 'calmed' down a bit, I did a bit of reflection. I think the problems I am facing may not be Huper software as it is with the hardware (and to a certain degree the environment). Still, one tends to look at the DVR as a whole.
  15. I am frequently experiencing intermittent failures in one of the few CCTV systems installed in my company. Occasionally, I get one or two cameras with the images coming on and off intermittently. My maintenance vendor checks and establishes that the camera is in serviceable condition, the DVR is okay. The only conclusion is some problem with the transmission of images i.e. cable. And tracing the source is a real headache and even off-putting. So, the usual recommendation is to recable, which is a rather costly affair. So, my questions are: Do I need to work in some annual budget for cable maintenance? What is the life span of the cabling? Does it vary with different type of cables e.g. RG, Cat 5, fibre optics, etc?
  16. I am actually having problems with the system that uses RG cables. Those with CAT5 are relatively new, about 2 years old. Maybe the problem might crop up later! (Can't bear the thought of it!!) To check through the cabling is too tedious because the CCTV system runs through a few connected warehouse terminals, with the trunking and conduits running all over the place and at high locations. Just the thought of checking the cabling is alreading off-putting.
  17. RG-59 can't bend more than 85 degrees??! Is this possible when the cable would need to run up down left right around corners? The truth is as customers, we would not know these things. How would we be able to check if the CCTV vendor has observed all these precautions?! Then, after many years down the road, we experience problems and incur hefty costs to rectify all these errors.
  18. Anyone out there who has his camera images being recorded onto more than 1 DVR as a form of back up if one DVR fails? Is this recommended?

    HUPER DVR

I was told that high heat is generated with the RAID 5 system as it involves 3 harddisks running 24/7. So, cool ambient temperature is critical apparently. Even then, they cannot guarantee that it would solve the problem. So frustrating this problem. Huh, I was even contemplated putting dry ice before the vent of each DVR where the ventilation fan sucks in air to cool the DVR! Imagine the poor security chap having to load chunks of dry ice every hour! Twas a wild thought but hey, it is still a solution, and a cheap one too! : D

    HUPER DVR

Okay, I just got an update on the problems I am having with my DVRs. It was speculated that the root cause of the problem is that the ambient temperature at the DVRs may be too high, resulting in these premature failures of harddisks. I was told that the normal appropriate temperature should be 18 deg C. I think mine is 23 deg C. Do you think this is the problem?

Contingency - record images to more than 1 DVR

What is required to split into parallel input lines? Some junction box or just a small splitter device? Would there be a drop in image quality?

    What makes camera "true" day/night?

Wow, so much info that I get a little weary from reading it. However, I must commend Rory for a great job he is doing in helping those of us who are users in this CCTV field. Is there a site I could visit where there are great illustrations/sample images of different camera types i.e IR, Day/Night, 1/3". 1/2", wide angel, etc etc. Would really be good for people like me who are no-so-completely-technically-illiterate-but-not-so-technosavy-either! I do find this field facinating and do not want to be conned by my CCTV vendors but at the same time the amount of info is so overwhelming that I do not really know how to start learning.

    HUPER DVR

Hi, I am back with more Huper DVR woes. Recently I experienced a major breakdown of one of the DVRs where the monitor just went blank and some message prompting us to insert system disk, which we didn't have and had to call our CCTV vendor to tend to the problem. They took about 8 hrs to troubleshoot and finally decided to change 2 of the 3 harddisks in the DVR. Then it worked fine.....until some 13 hrs later, it crashed again. Then this time, they took 2 hrs. Obviously, wisened up from the earlier experience, after some initial failure to reboot the harddisk, they changed it again. And to make matters worse, the DVR covers the cameras that are located in a high security area! I was told by the vendor that this might be a problem with the RAID 5 and suggested I opted for Raid 0. I refused to think this is the problem. He also said that I might need to configure all my DVRs so that it would periodically reboot itself just to clear the memory in the cache. Is this normal industrial practice?? I don't have to do that for my NetSafe DVRs.
