Software/Hardware compression cards - difference?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

Can anybody explain tell anything more about these two type or cards?

Rory did say:

"As I understand it (someone correct me if I am wrong) the hardware compression card will compress the video before it is sent through the PCI slot, while with the software compression cards, the raw video is sent without compression."

Or its just simple as that - if you have software based compression card you need more powerful PC?

Thanks

Rory is right.

For hardware compression card, the DVR cards have processor(DSP),it can compression video and audio by themself.

For software compression card, the CPU and RAM of PC will deal with the video and audio compression.

So you need a powerful PC if you use a software compression cards.
