Long range high quality camera?

Does anyone have suggestions for a camera that will be about 200-300 feet from the area it is viewing. On top of that I could use some recomendations on what lenses to try for a 40-50 foot viewing area at that distance. The goal is to make sure we can tell one person from another. Price isn't a huge concern, we need quality.

If you do not need the pan, and tilt features there are cameras that you can put in to an outdoor enclosure that are called zoom cameras.

I like the 220X zoom cameras. Some come with their own special controller, and you may have to cut the cord in half, and attach it to another cable so that you can run it a distance to the camera, and still control the zoom. There are zoom cameras that use the Pelco protocol to zoom in, and out, and you have to use a special controller that cost a little more.

 

They may be 22X (X = times) optical magnification, and 10X digital magnification for a total of 220X.

 

At the maximum range of the optical, and the digital magnification you will notice that there is a lot of pixalization, and this is normal for these kind of zoom systems. Make sure you do not buy a 9X optical, and a 10X digital if you really need to zoom in at a far distance!!

I find with my panasonic dome you get a quite useable picture up to 22x optical 5x digital (110X). The panasonic DSP appears to use real time digital iinterpolation to get higher resolution then you would expect at such digital magnification. The full 10x digital (220x zoom) is pretty worthless.

 

300x zoom (30x optical) 10x digital zoom, is very common now with domes. That sort of zoom has been around for many years with video cameras but they use a smaller CCD, so was more affordable to produce due to cheaper optics.
