CCTV24HRS 0 Posted April 6, 2008 Video and RS485 on the SAME cat 5 Is it ok to have RS485 on 1pr. of twisted wires, ie orange pr, and video on another twisted pr, ie green pr. I'm looking at switching one camera from fixed to PTZ and there is one cat 5 with only video on 1 twisted pr with baluns on each end. The other 3 pairs are not being used. I would like to add RS485 to one of the spare twisted pairs for PTZ control. My concerns are noise either from the RS485 or video causing some issues. Thought I'd ask before attempting this. kensplace 0 Posted April 6, 2008 It should be fine, its common to have video and rs485 in the same cat5 where needed.
survtech 0 Posted April 6, 2008 It won't be a problem as long as you use high quality CAT-5e or CAT-6 and good baluns or active devices. We do it all the time. In fact, we often use West Penn CC2418 siamese 18/2 with 2-pair CAT-5e. We use one pair for video and one for PTZ control.
