Dial Up DVR or Camera with a modem to get images

Recommended Posts

I have a client with a cottage in the middle of nowhere, meaning no high speed internet connection, but the cottage does have a telephone line.

He wants to be able to check on the cottage from time with images from the camera.

I've explained to him that there is pretty much no way he is going to be able to pump video down the line of a 33.6k modem, but he may be able to download some timed snapshots.

Anyone aware of a device that will allow you to dial into it with a modem, retrieve images from connected cameras, and then view them?

Sensormatic had a device called a Sensorlink. I have the manual and the hardware (minus the all important connector needed) in my office. Since I'm missing the key component I can't tell you it's effectiness, other than it also included PTZ control.

I'd recommend the Stardot netcam - www [dot] stardot-tech [dot] com/netcam/ - it's basically a plu-and-play solution as they offer a camera with embedded web server. I believe the company also offers a dial-up modem option which integrates with the camera. The system can be programmed to dial in and upload a new image to a website at predefined intervals.

I know of one person who used this camera with his own home-built modem circuit. It's a remotely located webcam that accesses the internet by phone line to upload its images: www [dot] mk-webcam [dot] net/

i have been researching and testing solutinos for this. Indigo vison has encoders that can put 10fps 4 cif video out at a bit rate of 32k. DPS telecom has a device that has a switch and a modem built in. Also it has alarm inputs. so it is possible ot get good video over a dial up. believe it or not.

I setup a basic Linux server w/dedicated phone line in our office to have remote dial-up if needed. Used a decent modem (US Robotics). Something like that comes to mind for a remote DVR setup. Only prob I had with this setup... I received spam faxes all the time! They would save on the Linux server is some format that needed to be converted.

I have thought of trying myself actually... hiding a small Linux server in the cottage somewhere with a UPS (vented of course), and dial-in occasionally. And since Linux rarely crashes like Windowz, it is not a big issue. Think of it as a co-located server. Dial-in and use SSH/SFTP to transfer imgs.

Not sure if that is a solution in this case though. Would need a Linux based DVR card obviously.

I used a device from Kalatel (now GE) a few years back called the RSM-1600, and were able to get video over the phone line .. its stuttery and low quality as you would see on TV news reports sometimes in the past, but it worked. The only reason it was used in that case was the owner didnt want anything on their local network. It is discontinued now though you may find some online for sale.
