auto focuse lense

for traffic surveillance applications im going to use auto focuse lense. Please tell me about benefits and costs and introduce me a brand if u know.

Hi

 

To Start with, you would be better off using a "Wide Dynamic Camera". This means when head lights come in front of the camera, for example, it cuts down on the glare, and allows better recognition of the vehicle, and if focused in close enough, and there is enough lighting, the licence plate, and even sometimes the person inside the vehicle, can be captured. It is like a backlighting setting that spreads across the entire width of the lens, so if you focus the lens in wide view, it will still work.

 

If using a wide dynamic camera, and its outdoors, you can use an Auto Iris lens also. Auto Iris, are used when there are variaions in lighting levels, such as outdoors. It componsates for the changes in lighting levels, better than most electronic iris cameras can, or cameras using manual lenses. Though Wide Dynamic Camera technology can generally accomplish this on its own, it really depends on the camera itself, and an auto iris lens is not much more expensive. so it is recommended.

 

Basically, if using any camera outdoors, you should use an Auto Iris lens, and if you want to use it for traffic surveillance, it is highly recommended to use a Wide dynamic Camera. Panasonic has some very good Day Night Wide Dynamic cameras designed just for this type of application.

Don't use an auto focus (providing you can find one) because with moving traffic the lens would constantly be trying to find a focus and you'll end up with poor pictures and pretty soon a burnt out lens motor. Using an auto iris lens will work best with a wide dynamic range camera like the Panasonic or GE as suggested earlier.
