but it is just a glorified brochure.

Anyone know for a downloadable manual or somewhere I can buy one from preferably in the UK

I believe this is the same type of model so all programming would be the same, just differences in overall recording time. If he has the manual maybe you could get him to copy it for you for a small fee. Here is the Ebay link.

I think you can order a service manual for this model from Sony's website (it should contain the operator manual information as well).
