I got a crazy idea... Use a $3,000 MacBook Air laptop as DVR

Recommended Posts

Hey gang,

I got fed up with looking for the "ideal" DVR. So much bull crap, so much hype...

I am thinking of using my MacBook Air as DVR if I get the green light from you guys...

The main reason I want to do this is that my Air uses a 64 SSD (Solid State Drive), 2GB Ram, 512 VRAM, and for my race car application recording on SSD as oppose to HD can prove beneficial.

Ok, I rolled up the sleeves... what should I get to make this happen?

I've heard about a USB 2.0 Video Capture Adapter that can be used with up to 4 cameras similar to this but there is insufficient information on this device

Here is my application Requirement Specification web page

Can you please help a brother in need?!? Any good ideas?

Firefox can't find the server at www.amcanproduction.com

I have one of those USB DVR devices with PC software (Swann) and it will only do 30 fps total at best over the 4 cameras.

Canon (for one) have a range of flash memory video cameras, four of the cheapest ones will likely give you a far better result than you would get with CCTV cameras and a security DVR for the same money.

But if size is a problem here is a recorder that might work, one per channel:

The problem with my application is that I need 4 cameras not 1
