How To Demo? or Why Do Demos Suck

Recommended Posts

It seems to me that you cannot believe a manufacturers spec. If that is the case you need to demo, but they do not seem to represent what a product can do.

Please check out some of the demos below and pick a system based only on the demo.

Ganz MPEG4 480 TVL

http://www.cbcamerica.com/cctvprod/ganz/cams/ipcam/ipcam.html

ACTi Video Server

http://www.acti.com/software/live_demo.Asp

Sony PTZ SNCRZ30N (if it ever works)

http://151.204.174.22/home/homeJ.html

Same Cam in Texas

http://64.95.219.1/home/homeA.html

Geovison in LA

http://www.dvrkits.com/dvr_live_demo.htm

Video Insight in Houston

http://www.demovi.com

Tons Of Demos

http://www.spytown.com/remvidtrande.html

I think the ACTi looks the best and the Geovison is a close second with the Ganz who I have used and like looks like crap. I think that Nuvico has installed a T3 into a laundry mat to make there demo look good

It would be nice if a third party would do some real testing of the cameras and DVR's

Before someone replys with bandwidth and to many users as the difference I think that a company the size of Sony selling a PTZ for $1500 dollars should be able to afford decent bandwidth and load balance over a few PTZ cams using Round Robbin DNS.

Yep yep and YEP!

BUT ....

Are you talking about demos of cameras or DVRs, as you are in the Security Camera section ...????

Anyway, as you are talking about DVRs/Remote Video and not cameras .. basically, Browser based Remote Video apps are nowhere as powerfull as windows Apps, they are only good for one thing, quick remote view of your DVR with little to no downloads - other than this y ou may as well download the full program.

The Asian Demos just make me choke, especially GEO which is the most unstable of demos I have tested, crashes my PC straight through ..how many active X do they want you to install for gawds sake! Loan DOS pop up batch files, have they ever heard of windows scripting ..!? Or are they doing something they dont want me to know ..! Seriously though, why the heck use the browser based if I have to install a regular windows setup program anyway, just let me use a full powered windows GUI one time!! Demo didnt work anyway, needed a user and pass ...

Video Insight makes the most sense, nothing to download!

the others, seen them been there done that, no time tonight ..

one last thing though, hey, at least these guys have demos, most of the big boys dont even have a demo online ...

I'm sorry you didn't care for our demo. It's not that representive of what our DVR can do, nor is it ment to be. It's ment to show our web client off. As Rory pointed out, we handle everything on the server end, rather then making the client install something. If you want something more full featured then our network client can be used as well.

BTW: That demo is our office, and the preset Tom on the ptz is me.

Thomas,

It is not that I do not like your demo it is just that MPEG seems so much more fluid than jpg. The jpg looks like a flip book to me. Also your system uses MS SQL for the backend and the developer edition only handles 10 concurrent connections, that scares me when it comes to scaling.

I agree with rory on the Geo install, but after you get it to work it looks great.

Most of the people I work with are not interested in security but viewing there workers remotely. The biggest cost of most business is payroll, if you get 5% more productivity because they think they are being watched that is more money than most would ever loose in a theft.

The MSDE isn't an issue when it comes to scaling. We're only writing to it in bursts, and even if more then ten systems hit the MSDE at the same time, you're only looking at a half second delay in accessing the data. When the ten connection limit is hit then you get a random delay in the read/write. The random delay is between .01 to .5 seconds. It's not enough to cause us to hickup. We have two clients with 20+ systems networked together without an issue. And any truely massive install (100+) is going to have an IT infratructure. At that point you just load us into a real SQL server.

There is a trade off in fluidity with the way we do it, but the plus side is that we work well in alot more browswers.

I'll see if I can get consent to load it onto the main server. But I can give you the real world benchmarks.

XP Pro based systems: 40 user limit. It's a limitation within IIS rather then us.

2000/2003: Limit is based on the resources of the machine. But in a 2.8 P4, 512 mb of ram we can host 100+ people at a time.
