squale 0 Posted February 2, 2005 what is this all about, it looks like Plenum cable is the more expensive, but it looks the same as Non-Plenum? Thanks
VST_Man 1 Posted February 2, 2005 Data or communications cables can be installed in most buildings without metal protection, but a specialized plenum rating is required for installation in ceiling and floor plenums. Plenum-rated, a term used describe Ethernet cable that has slow-burning, fire-resistant casing that emits little smoke. Plenum-rated Ethernet cable is used in overhead ductwork. joe4 0 Posted February 2, 2005 Plenum you can run in a ....... Air Plenum. It has a coating on it that prevents toxic smoke from being pumped via the A/C into the building if the cable was in a fire. Commercial buildings with drop ceilings use the air space above the ceiling as the air plenum in most cases. There is lots of ratings like Riser Rate can only penetrate vertical floors such as a elevator shaft. You need to check your building codes on if you are required to run plenum. If you are running plenum you may also need fire stop. It is rated by hours and should be used if you penetrate a wall that is designed to prevent fire from spreading.
