What does it mean when the specs (ad) state the term: CS in ralation to the camera lens?

C and CS are the distance between the lens and the imager. C-mount lenses are 5mm deeper between the threads and the back of the lens than CS-mount lenses. What that means is that you have to match the camera to the lens, with one exception:

 

If the camera is a C-mount, you must use a C-mount lens. A CS-mount lens would be too far from the imager and would not focus. If the camera is a CS-mount, you can use a CS-mount lens or you could use a C-mount lens with a C-to-CS adaptor, which is nothing more than a 5mm spacer with threads on the inside and outside.

 

Most modern cameras use CS-mount lenses. Some are universal - they have an adjustable lens mount that allows use of either type of lens by moving it in or out. This feature is sometimes called a back focus adjustment.

 

Edit: sorry, I got it backwards. I had it right, then checked myself on the internet before submitting the post. The first website I checked had it wrong. Silly me! I trusted wecusurveillance.com. "This CCTV lens adapter allows you to connect a CS lens to a C lens mount camera, it gives the correct spacing so the lens does not touch the CCD chip."

C Mount Lens

 

The flange back (distance from the surface where the lens comes in contact with the camera to the focal point) of C mount lens is 17.526mm (0.69 inch). This is the only difference between the C mount lens and CS mount lens. C mount lens, as well as CS mount, is 1 inch diameter with 32 threads per inch. A C ring (5mm spacer ring) is required when a C mount lens is to be mounted to a CS mount camera unless the camera has built-in flange-back adjusting ring.

 

 

 

CS Mount Lens

 

The flange back of CS mount lens is 12.5mm (0.492 inch). This is 5mm shorter than the C mount lens and you need a 5mm spacer ring (or, C-ring) when you mount a C mount lens to a CS mount camera. CS mount camera is always compatible with C or CS mount lens. C mount camera is not compatible with CS mount lens.

 

Cost wise the CS mount lens is much less expensive since it uses fewer glass elements. Quality of image is the same. C mounts are becoming less, and less popular.
