Bluetooth wireless mouse control

Recommended Posts

Hello all, im a newbie here on the cctv forum, and to cctv in general.

I just installed a Clinton Electronics brand DVR called the "cricket"

It has 2 usb ports (one intended for a mouse and the other for usb flash drive backup). The unit is installed in a closet, and the mouse cord is of standard length so i cant use the mouse and see where im navigating on the screen. I purchased a 15' cord so I will be able to use it.

However, I was wondering if I could get a USB Bluetooth dongle and mouse to control it? I am wondering because usually you have to install drivers for these type of usb devices, and I dont know if that will be possible on a dedicated DVR that doesnt have a typical operating system per-se. Any thoughts?

If it needs a driver, then I don't see how it would work.

I personally use a mouse extender. It is a set of USB to RJ-45 connectors that you put on the ends of a CAT5 lan cable. I am running mine about 45 feet, the package says it is good for 300 feet. I picked mine up on Ebay.

Cool. Thanks for the thoughts guys. I think i may look into picking up a BT dongle and use my BT mouse for my apple computer (potential YIKES!)

What brand do you use todoenred?

If your DVR supports the HID (Human Interface Device) spec on its USB port, then most wireless mice should work (you can test this by plugging a regular USB mouse in and seeing if that works). For the BT dongle to work, it would have to conform to the HID spec as well, which cheap ones may not do.

Thanks for the advice. I will have to try out a HID dongle. I have purchased a cheap dongle off an unnamed website because this forum wont allow me to post it (LAME) for $0.99 ($5 shipping). I plugged it in and the light blinked on it like it wanted to work, but tried connecting my apple mighty mouse, and no luck. So i tried a logitech, and same results...no pairing. I think i will try out a D-link DBT-120 that says it has HID and share the results.

Update: (long overdue)... i just bought a usb extension cord and used a corded mouse. Also got a better IR remote from the dvr manufacturer. Works good for my use. I am upgrading to a 16 channel soon, and may try to tinker with bluetooth again at that point.
