nigel 0 Posted March 4, 2009 Hi guys, just joined the site very interesting. First of all let me say i have no knowledge of CCTV systems, however i am researching it for my company. we are interested in installing a 16 camera system, suppliers have suggested coax/siamese Rg 59 cable and others recommended cat 5 with baluns. The longest distance is approximately 800 ft from the DVR and power supply. My questions are would the signal and power be affected by the distance and are these cables shielded against other signals as we operate in an area which has a lot of radio frequency? One other concern is at one location we are installing two cameras in some cases which of the cables would be recommeded. Please any other advice or recommendations would be greatly appriciated. mitstarion 0 Posted March 5, 2009 Cable length has an effect on the signal and power. The longer the cable the higher the resistance, the lower the signal and voltage arrive at the other end of the cable. Google voltage drop calculator to know the power wire thickness required for your application. Although, I recommend powering the cameras locally for long distances. RG-59 and RG-6 coax are shielded and CAT5 UTP is not. In your case, I prefer to use CAT5 UTP because CAT5 has good resistance to EMI and RFI. One CAT5 cable can be connected to 4 cameras. If you have 4 cameras at the same location, just run 1 CAT5 cable is enough. Saves $$$ and effort.
