Samsung SHR 504X / Netgear router - Internet setup problems

I'm having trouble accessing a Samsung SHR 504X DVR conected to a Netgear cable wired router over the internet. I can connect via the local LAN IP address however.

 

I can't get a static IP address from the cable ISP but the Samsung has a DDNS facility built in so it shouldn't be a problem...

 

I think I've set up port forwarding correctly (does the 'service name' matter?) and have reserved the local IP of the DVR and allowed it to be a DMZ on the router.

 

The router doesn't list the DVR as an attached device although I wouldn't be able to view it locally if it wasn't attached.

 

Any suggestions as to what I might be doing wrong? I've been trying to sort this out for days now!

I don't have much DDNS experience, But I think you want it set up on the router, not the DVR.

 

Also, if you are trying to access the DVR's DDNS address from within the same network you are likely to have problems. In other words, have you tried from work or from a friends house?

 

Another thing to try (from a different network) is to bypass the DDNS and enter the routers public IP address in the viewer software instead of the DDNS address. If you don't know your public IP address then goto http://www.ipchicken.com from any computer connected to the same router as the DVR. That will tell you your IP address.

Thanks for your reply. I did try using a dyndns address but it got blocked as something (the router presumably) was checking the address too often so it seemed sensible to use Samsung's own service instead. I had also downloaded their dns updater to the PC so already have a reference to the public IP address.

 

I did try the Samsung address from an unconnected machine but haven't had a chance to try the WAN IP address direct (it doesn't work from this network as I've tried it lots of times with and without the port number added!). I can't set that public address in the Samsung NetI software either.

 

If it's all just down to being on the same network then maybe there's light at the end of the tunnel but otherwise I'm really in the dark...

 

Sorry if my networking technical expertise is not up to scratch, I've never had to do this before - it's a steep learning curve.

Hopefully someone else will chime in on using the DDNS service on the DVR while behind a router. I'm not sure what the PC updater is and all that. And do try the WAN IP from another location when you get a chance. It may be working just fine! If it is still not working even when the DVR is in the DMZ then you should check to see if your ISP is blocking any ports.

 

Many people have had problems accessing their WAN IP from within their own network. It must be an ISP specific problem. I guess I'm lucky. I have no problems doing just that. But my ISP is pretty "techie" so it doesn't surprise me. Their DSL packages gives you up to 8 static IP's and no blocked ports.

Yes I can, no problem with that. Just can't get beyond it to or through the WAN. Am in London, very late here but will try again tomorrow... thanks for any help, it's much appreciated.
